Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

I was all up and ready to jump over to the Surface (coming from an ipad2) but that price is just too much for the sacrifice on only being on ARM so will probably end up getting the next ipad in March. For the price of an ipad3 I want a much higher resolution than this offers and was really expecting the base level Surface Pro to be 600-700USD not the top end RT. Guess I just misjudged Microsoft's pricing strategy on wanting to enter a new market.

I think you misjudged how much things cost to make to be honest, you can't get an ultrabook for $700 so you were never going to get the same hardware in a smaller form factor, with a touchscreen AND a digitizer.

This makes me more sad about the state of the traditional desktop than happy for the metro environment.

Honestly, I think it's too late for any major changes to be made to the desktop in regards to how programs are managed. Apple really got it right in that respect with the first release of OSX.

People complain about Metro apps not 'closing' by default, but honestly, it's godsend. It's absolutely amazing clicking on an app or game and instantly getting back to where I was when I quit it. I've got about 6 games running in the background at the moment and they're not using any resources at all.

The thing about Windows is that you are not limited to just one device. Don't disregard the devices from other manufacturers.
If you think ARM is an issue, then you might be interested in the Acer Iconia W510, which has an Intel Atom CPU and also starts at 500$. Seems pretty great. At 600$ to 650$ there are also a number of other really nice Atom tablets such as the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2, which also comes with a pen.

Well the RT price made the decision easier, Acer with full Win 8 it is...for the same price.

The pricing doesn't really surprise me, I wasn't expecting Microsoft to really be aggressive with pricing. They haven't really done aggressive pricing in recent history.

If Microsoft really wanted to see some big success, they would have to price it cheaper than the iPad. Surface will probably sell ok, but the iPad is still the market leader by far.

This pricing, along with the negative word surrounding Windows 8 isn't going to help Microsoft. I feel that Surface is just far too late to the market, like most things Microsoft is doing these days.

Also those cover prices, brutal...

The iPad 2 is £329 here, or around $529 US. You're right, in that we can probably expect a similar price premium on the Surface, but I do expect a 32GB + kb bundle could hit £400 or even less.
I think it's unlikely that it will be 400 pounds or less. You need to remember that you're paying VAT. An American could come and buy a bunch and claim the VAT refund and get a substantial discount over the US price.

Yeah, true, I think I got sucked in by the early guesses and hoped Microsoft would subsidise their initial entry into the tablet market.

Good thinking; I was pinning it all on Surface or ipad and may have to just expand to the other manufacturers. Especially if those Acer and Lenova tablets can match the build quality, looks and support for a competitive price.

It looks nice, but going by the quality of my gf's last two Acer laptops, there's no way in hell I'm going to buy anything manufactured by them.

If so I might still bite if it works well. Surface RT is still undeniably one sexy device.

It's definitely got potential as a remote desktop device, as you say it will be interesting to see if it works much better than an iPad in those situations.

Its about 200 dollar too much IMHO... If they had went with 300 dollars, they could have really changed the atmosphere of the tablets.... Its a bit too expensive to change the tablet landscape in my opinion. :\

It surprises me that so many of you guys are debating between Surface, iPad, and Nexus. I have always approached this sort of thing by choosing a platform/ecosystem first (seemingly much more important than the device, IMO) and then choosing the best device from there.

So for me, the Surface is still the best and cheapest (well, tied with the Acer) Windows tablet announced.

Whelp, so much for that. Microsoft is insane to not price the RT tablet plus the keyboard at under 500.

$300 for a 32GB 10 inch tablet with Office? GTFO. $499 is a great price. It doesnt need to and it never was going to compete with the iPad. The same way OSX doesnt need to and cant compete with Windows.

My last 2 netbooks and a nettop were Acer. Not an Acer fanboy, I am just a cheap ass. I really like the nettop, but the rest... were cheap for a reason.

I think I am going to get something nicer this time, probably a Lenovo Tablet 2. Its only weakness is lack of battery in the keyboard.

Not only is it heavier than most of the Atom models (which will all run Win8 Pro and have full x86 app support) it also has less features & ports than most of them as well. It might look the prettiest but that's about it.

Good fucking luck, MS... what a disaster. Just buy a fucking laptop at that price. Or save hundreds and get a freaking Nexus 7.

I'm thinking the same, the fact it's not a transformer is a shame but a 1st party dock is the next best thing

Lol, relax dude. A 10 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is around 300/350 if you shop around. Is Office on a touchscreen really worth 200 bucks to you?
There is nothing "great" about this pricing for such an unproven tablet, especially not in today's market.

Not regretting my N7 purchase now. I really wanted them to make a splash with this but they are freaking out to lunch.

Bargain basement Android tablets and the imminent Ipad-mini will remove a lot of hype on this product.

This really needed to be below the Ipad 3 to get noticed

Will wait on the Pro to see what impact it has

I'm pretty surprised that MS is pricing it this way - almost directly in line with the iPad. It doesn't seem like it's interesting enough to warrant the price.

I suppose there are some people who might think MS Office makes it worth it. I'm not one of them - especially since it's not a touch optimized version of Office.

My gut feeling is this thing isn't going to get a significant number of people to move away from the ipad at 500 bucks. I doubt it'll tank like the playbook or Touchpad, but it's not going to set the world on fire.

The Surface Pro might sell at the same level as other ultrabooks but no one who wants a tablet because it's cheap, light and thin (oh, and super simple to use) will choose the Surface pro.

Yes it is a sexy bitch that's for sure but I absolutely hate the pricing. Anyone who gets this over an Atom doesn't care about functionality.

Lol..this much for tablet with such crappy screen and the weakest ecosystem around? I never expected much from Windows RT, but it seems Microsoft is just sending the Surface RT to die.

It's going to be funny when Apple release the new iPad and iPad mini and make this shit irrelevant just a few days after launch

$500 and a $120 keyboard? lol

Nobody is going to buy this for this price. Microsoft done goofed up again.

I don't really care for Apple as a company, but why would anyone pay MORE for the RT tablet that has no established base compared to Apple's app store, let alone Android's? If it was priced low, it could have been an amazing way to get people into the ecosystem, but this was priced to go to war against the iPad, and Microsoft has no guns.

The new new iPad isn't going to release a few days after the Surface launch and the iPad Mini isn't directly competing with the Surface.

Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I think it's a pretty attractive price for a 32GB tablet. I also imagine Windows RT won't become the next WebOS any time soon, so it'll be decently supported.

That said, I have no interest in getting this or any Windows RT tablet.

Was realistically expecting $400 for the 32GB without the cover. $100 too much for me. My wallet was ready too.

Turns out that wasn't really realistic.

To quote Charlie Kindel:
Typical cost of distr., ads., & marketing = ~40% of BOM. Surface BOM is at least $370. Do the math. Then factor in NRE. #notabiz #northstar

If the parts alone cost 370$ and Microsoft doesn't want to give it away at cost...

$100 premium for the touch cover? That's ridiculous. I thought it would come with the cover; didn't know there would be a premium for it.

Who's this marketed to? I mean I thought they were trying to undermine the iPad with this thing, but making it at the same price just completely ruins it. The thing has no fucking apps compared to it! And I'm not saying that how lame ass Apple fanboys say Android has no apps, I mean this thing has such a damn small amount so far that there's no reason anyone would choose this over an iPad or the Nexus 7, unless they're super hardcore Microsoft fanboys or something.

Well, not in my case. The Surface RT could almost replace my laptop for most uses, but the iPad? No way in hell.

What's the difference? I think the Nexus 7 could have replaced my laptop if it was larger. I think all laptops are cumbersome compared to the tablet form now.

This is the problem. Surface is almost what I need. But why are they charging such a premium for a keyboard and Office?

Because they think they can. They think this is special. If it was priced this way for a real Windows 8 (not RT) tablet, then I'd agree, but not for RT.
