Windows RT vs. Windows 8

Windows RT contains many of the same features as Windows 8:
  • Fluid, intuitive, and easy-to-use interface design that you can easily customize.
  • Built in apps like Mail, Calendar, Messaging, Photos, and SkyDrive with many more apps available in the Windows Store.
  • Internet Explorer 10, for fast, intuitive browsing.
  • Touch-enabled so you can interact with Windows in a whole new way.
  • Mouse and keyboard–enabled so you can be as productive as you need to be.

Windows RT also includes some different features:
  • Windows Update and Windows Defender are always on and up to date making your PC more secure.
  • Device encryption provides advanced data protection to help keep your information secure.
  • The PC can turn on instantly with connected standby.
  • Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview is preinstalled2.

Some features aren't included in Windows RT:
  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Media Center
  • HomeGroup creation (you can join an existing HomeGroup but you can't create a new one)
  • Remote Desktop
  • Domain join

Although you can install apps directly from the Windows Store, you can't install apps on the desktop on Windows RT. Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview Edition comes preinstalled2, which provides you with touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

You can only install printers, mice, keyboards, and other devices that are certified for Windows RT.
[1] HD Video Out also requires the HD Digital AV Adapter or VGA Adapter (each sold separately).

[2] Microsoft Home and Student 2013 RT Preview edition installed. Final Office Home & Student version will be installed via Windows Update when available (free download; ISP fees apply). Some features and programs unsupported. Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview and the final version are not for use in commercial, nonprofit, or revenue generating activities. Commercial license options available (sold separately). See http://office.com/officeRT.

[3] Surface with Windows RT works exclusively with apps from the Windows Store.

I am their exact target audience but at this price point (base + addons to get real experience) I think I'll sit this one out on the sidelines.

Pretty pissed off about this to be honest. I kind of want Surface to fail now, even if I do get one. It deserves to fail for the price they're lauching it at.

If you can hold out after the holiday, MS will find out they can't sell the 5 million Surface they order, and they will pull a BB Playbook discount. It may not be a TouchPad fire sale but you should be able to get a bundle at much lower price.

Microsoft is crazy, this is priced at least $100 too high. And when the iPad mini is announced on October 23rd (just 3 days before Surface launch) the price gap will likely be even wider.

Not sure what Microsoft was thinking here.

Even though I can't afford it, there's no way I would wish death on the first tablet to get things right. This is a shake up we need in the market.

Even at those prices I think it's competitive with the iPad in terms of value, but I don't think the average consumer will.

The iPad mini will most probably canalize the Kindle fire and the Nexus 7 sales, rather than the surface.

i don't understand all people pissed about price, you think microsoft telegraphing that this is going to be a premium product by highlighting the craftsmanship and design of the product would put people in the mind set that this thing isn't going to be cheap.

New iPad

16gb 499.99
32gb 599.99
64gb 699.99

Surface

32gb 499.99 (No Touch Cover)
32gb 599.99
64gb 699.99

This.

It would be fine if the 499 price included the touch cover but it doesn't. Considering how MS is marketting the Surface with cover as the complete package (the click in slogan hinges on the fact the customer buys both products), it only makes sense to consider the 599 price as the base price.

So you do not like the fact that you can choose to go for the 499 and then buy the type cover to save money?

There will obviously be a price cut in the near future if you don't want buyers remorse, because it is a tad pricey.

Wuuut, WinRT has no remote desktop?

NOOO, the dream of a WinRT device using remote desktop for development is now over :(

Edit: Oh, it does have the client. So it's still good!
