Why? I mean, if you haven't jumped on one by now, you might as well wait a few more months until iPad 4.

Just sold my iPad 1st gen, bought an iPad 3 since I had a good offer, but wouldn't wait 6 or more months until an iPad 4. So I'm hoping for a intermediary refresh of the iPad 3 :)

Does the screen quality really factor into in when it concerns the IPod? I get it on the phone because you need to have than on you all the time The Ipod has a small 4" display and there is so much more utility with the mini

I think portability is the bigger determinant

I dunno, ask iPod owners that use it for gaming.

People are STILL debating about the retina thing? Yikes guys, prepare to be disappointed.

We're building to a critical mass to maximize outrage and disappointment.

Even though it will be noticeably sharper than iPad 2 which outsold every competitor combined and continues to do well.

For me, it's just for compatibility. Now that they've made the move I just want all of my devices to be lightning and be done with it.

yup. Iphone 5 switched to it, now I'm counting down the days until I don't need the millions of old 30-pin adapter laying around the house anymore.

Which brings me to this ---> Will Apple please, please, please see it in their hearts to update the iPod Classic one last time with lightning and capacity bump? Use the old design if you want, I don't care.

You're not getting a "retina" display at $200-$400, brah. Forget that shit.

That said, 1024x768 @ 7" is going to be damn sharp (ppi/dpi).
It's closest rival is probably the Nexus 7, which is a similar screen size @ 1280x800. So 'damn sharp' is a bit much. 'Just about acceptable' is more accurate.

Pretty much. Nintendo is done for.

No.

Different markets are very different.

So they're identical for all intents and purposes, as 50 pixels x 30 pixels is meaningless.

so how much is a Nexus 7? and are you suggesting that the Nexus 7 isn't damn sharp? Have you seen one in person to suggest that resolution is only "acceptable"? Because I thought 1024x768 was quite acceptable for years on my 10" iPad. 7" smaller should be a damn high ppi.

Clearly non-retina isn't a deal breaker if people are and continue to be happy with a product that is not only non-retina but that has an even worse PPI than the iPad Mini

People in the thread are saying it's a deal breaker to them, not to the overall market. Sales don't matter unless you're an investor

iPad Mini is 7.85, not 7, so the difference is about 60 ppi (something like 35% more)

To be fair, the Nexus 7 has a PPI of ~215 versus the iPad mini's ~163.

This is mainly because the iPad mini has 35 square inches of screen space vs the Nexus 7's 24.

That's fine, I'm just saying that nobody should be holding out hope for a retina display because it's not going to happen (yet).

I can tell you the Nexus 7's screen still looks pretty blurry with relatively crappy text rendering. I wouldn't be surprised if the mini's screen looks better, even with a lower PPI.

They are going to re-integrate google maps into all existing Apple product platforms in compliance with consumer demands.

Someone on twitter confirmed it.

oic.

guess I'll have to see it in person to judge.

All I know is that the original iPad screen still looks fine unless text is small. That same resolution at 2"-3" smaller seems like it'd be pretty sharp. Especially for the expected asking price. IDK.

well that sucks. I can't imagine Apple would drop a device with bad text clarity in 2012.

re: lightning connector: I might upgrade my iPad 3 as well, as all future iOS-compatible 3rd party hardware is going to run on it. I'd imagine I would lose very little money selling my current iPad 3. though I wish it was at least a USB 3/Thunderbolt speed-capable cable.

iPad 3: 264 PPI
Nook HD+: 256 PPI
Kindle Fire HD 8.9: 254 PPI
Nook HD: 243 PPI
Nexus 7: 216 PPI
Kindle Fire HD: 216 PPI
Kobo Arc: 216 PPI
iPad Mini (speculative) : 164 PPI
Kindle Fire : 160 PPI
Nook Tablet : 160 PPI

It would be about a hair better than a Kindle Fire.

The Little iPad

Name confirmed?

iPad being renamed to iBoard

If it improves on the 7's washed out colors and image retention/ghosting, it may be a fair trade off.

The real killer here is going to be the thin/light factor. That's how they will market it. Not as a smaller ipad but a super thin and light iPad for only [insert price]. Which means tons of sales from people who've wanted an iPad but weren't ready to pay $399.

I'm thinking that iOS 6.1 and iTunes 11 will both be coming out shortly after this, too, with Shared Reminders and maybe new music services.

I wonder if the iMacs will lose the optical drive and add standard SSD+HDD combo, also. It'd be nice.

And yeah, selling point on the iPad mini is almost certainly going to be making it crazy crazy thin.

yea, probably. I wouldn't be surprised if they damn near gloss over the screen entirely if it's not a "retina" display. regardless, I expect the display to look good. it's going to be about the price.

Since when did Apple fans stop caring about quality and only focused on sales?

Love how Apple are expected to have retina for $250-$300 or no buy yet MS is charging double for an iPad 2 spec screen.

Apple won't have retina for $250-$300.

or, I wouldn't bet on it.

Since when did Apple fans stop caring about quality and only focused on sales?

I think we just assume that if they're putting that screen in there, it's of acceptable enough quality to make people comfortable with the price they're targeting it at.

You can't question the "quality" if you haven't seen it.

Of course quality is important, but I'm not expecting this thing to have an A7 chip and three days of battery.

Retina is an excellent upgrade but isn't feasible yet at this price point. The screen will still probably best other tablets in every way except PPI. The continuing sales of the iPad 2 show that many many people don't think retina is a dealbreaker so this thing will still sell like hotcakes even if I don't buy one due to the low PPI.

(I'm actually thinking about trading down my iPad 3 for one of these)
