The Onion writes about a man that could describe most message board posters.

Did the Internet create all these critics/cynics, or were they already out there and the Internet is the vehicle for them?

Nah, I had a friend who took pleasure in criticizing every single thing in life, even before the internet. I don't know some people hate everything. Must be tough to make friends unless you find another hater.

It really ran out of steam 10 years ago. I m surprised people still like it, there are a lot of better sites out there.

I agree. They had this fantastic article a bunch of years back, at the start of the global downturn, about Mexicans complaining that Mexicans that had illegally crossed the border into the US were now illegally crossing back across the border and taking Mexican's jobs. It was good.

Other than that, thedailymash absolutely ruins the onion.

Human nature, they always exist.

I think the Internet doesn't just enable them, it also aggravates them. When you only know a few people in real life, it's easy to imagine that something you hate isn't liked by anybody.

When you can go on forums and see ten thousand people enjoying say, Call of Duty, or That Cartoon You Don't Get, the cognitive dissonance must be overwhelming.

The real problem I think, when people end up acting like the guy in this article, is when they lose the distinction between explaining why they don't like something and cross the line to asserting nobody should like it - either directly, or indirectly.

There are a lot of people who get quite angry that their 'opinion' is not being respected, when they don't realize that they're no longer just stating an opinion, but making up their own facts in order to support the degree of outrage they feel.

Generally, if you don't want to be like That Guy, you should practice actually understanding other people's point of view. Cynics tend to be selfish, and believe that their POV is inherently more "honest" and they don't have to consider the view of all those idiots who are clearly wrong. But understanding other people isn't an impenetrable mystery. It just requires dropping your ego down a notch and developing some humility. It's helpful. You don't waste energy going around outraged so much, baffled at how this thing you don't care for exists and why anyone made it.

If I critique something, I try to frame it in a way that doesn't deal with whether or not people ENJOY it. Because they have a right to enjoy whatever is they enjoy. Thus I don't use ridiculous generalizations like "this is the most horrible ______ ever it has no redeeming qualities and should not exist". Which is what you often seen when people claim they're "just expressing their opinion".

Yea. The main reason I stopped visiting threads for shows that I enjoy like Game of Thrones and American Horror Story. People bitch about every little flaw and seem to just not be able to enjoy the show.

Same for me, following tv show threads on GAF is such a buzzkill

Along with his campaign to disparage things everyone loves, Lerner confirmed that he also takes it upon himself to defend things everyone hates by lamenting how scandalously underrated they are.

“You know, Godfather III is actually not that bad,” Lerner said.

Replace Godfather III with Speed Racer or Alpha Protocol and you have GAF.

Reminds me of a thread on the gaming side the other day where someone wanted a new metroid prime game for the Wii U. Right down to people praising a metroid game that everyone hates (Other M).

If I get involved in a TV show thread (anime or otherwise) I will point out every plot hole and every inconsistency in the logic of the character or characters. I have a disease.

At least I'm not one of those dicks that claim to not like the LOTR trilogy though.

I dunno, I think the threads for LOST and Battlestar Galactica were worse. It was just non stop belly aching. There were posters who HATED those shows, but had 10 posts queued at the end of each episode.
Legend of Korra (Avatar the last airbender) thread is another level :( One poster even suggested that the show is so bad that it requires an apology from the creators.

Me too. Last season on Dexter was really bad. I'd watch an episode and come away liking it. Go on GAF and find post after post ripping it to shreds.

Eh it's worse to read the gaf hyperbolic love threads.

Plus, Dexter season 7 was pretty awful...

I recently watched season 4 of Dexter, and decided to check the thread for reaction to the finale. All I saw was countless amounts of bitching and complaining, and what is even worse was the majority of it was coming from people that obviously didn't watch or pay attention to the full episode because anybody that did would have known that
Rita didn't commit suicide, and the trinity killer murdered her
. Just hating to be hatin. Don't even get me started on Lost, according to the majority of GAF nobody should watch pass season 1.

And god forbid if you enjoyed any of the Wii ______ (Sports, Music, Resort, Party, Fit, Play, etc...) games.

This is me-but I don't want to stop my Final Fantasy 13 Hate Crusade. People...people need to know that they're playing a bad game! I'm doing the lord's work! He told me!

Gave up hating on FF13 a while ago, currently waiting for the next game to hate on

Yea the ff13 hate was just getting stupid.

I don't know if I can call the Onion a news source but it is probably the best source of social commentary around

edit: also I should mention that the whole hyperbolic internet comment thing is infuriating

Final line was brilliant. I love The Onion.

When reached for comment, Lerner told reporters that ending a news story with a follow-up comment from a source was a “lame and hacky” journalistic technique.
