My fascination is with people investing so much into pop artists with short-term career spans compared to other genre musicians. Most of it is based on image rather than long-living talent like playing instruments. There are exceptions like...ok I don't know any pop singer whose voice still sounds great, maybe Mariah Carey?

Again, Tallest Man on Earth is not pop, he's folk. Secondly, he's one guy, not a band. Third, he writes his own music, hence the term "singer/songwriter".

pop is a term that's above labels like folk, it's more an indication of the musical structure, song length and use of vocals (hooks). it spun off from the word popular and now has become synonymous with those things just mentioned. charts =/= pop.

tallest man is not jazz, he's not drone, he's not hip-hop. broader definitions like that are more useful.

There simply is no contest between, say, self-professed 'authentic' chanteur Jake Bugg and chart slayers Girls Aloud about whose oeuvre shows more creativity: The Almighty Aloud totally shit on him. The fact that their songs were written by someone not in the band is, as far as I'm concerned, totally irrelevant.

i don't have any insight into swift's song writing process, but the idea there is some big gap between two pretty obvious pop bands like xx and tallest man and swift is silly.

There's nothing wrong with not writing your own material, if you're a good enough singer or performer. But let's just be clear that Taylor Swift is by and large a product, not some modern Joni Mitchell.

Sports are a different deal. They fit the target demo, and I think most people wouldn't have a hard time explaining why they like baseball. Sports provide an outlet for human competitiveness and tribalism, while also offering up vicarious accomplishment and archetypal models of success. They provide endless grist for debate, with empirical resolution.

Plus dunks are fucking cool.

Did I ever say that tho? No, I said that a lot of pop music is more lyrically and musically creative than a lot of self-proscribed 'authentic' music. And it's true. Lots of 'authentic' music is some twat with a guitar doing his or her best pub-coverband impression of Joni Mitchell or Tim Buckley. Lots of it's amazing, of course, and it bubbles up through to the mainstream so that, for instance, fifteen years after somebody makes exciting, pioneering music the sounds start to filter through into pop music. But the twats with the guitars will sing the same tedious songs from now until eternity.
