Apple's October 23 Event | We've got a little more to show you.

That's good to know. She wants a 15" MBP with an internal DVD drive, so you're saying we could probably still wait until next summer?

I mean, it's not guaranteed that they'll still upgrade the non-retina MBPs when the next refresh comes along. If that's the case, might as well buy them now.

This so much.... I remember people saying this about phones in the past, and I could barely find a soul that agreed with me. Glad to see people being rational though. A new version of a device you own does NOT invalidate your current device. It still works, it still does what it was promised to do when you bought it. I don't get this, we all know how fast things move in this market.
And in this particular market that has been almost exactly one year between refreshes. I don't own an ipad so I am not personally upset, but I always thought that having yearly refreshes was one of the smartest things apple ever did. Apple having the top of the line devices, and the only devices in their ecosystem, coupled with a yearly cycle meant that people with zero tech savvy could walk into a store and be confident that they bought a device that would be the best for an entire year.

Amazon trade in has a great amount for my 2.
But I can't buy the new 4th gen with Amazon credit.

Best Buy and Gazelle give me awful amounts.
I guess I'll sell myself and eat the fees.

The manager at the Stockton Street store in San Francisco explained that "this specific store" would allow purchasers of the third-generation iPad to exchange their device for the fourth-generation iPad if purchased within the last 30 days. She emphasized that, unless the recently-purchased iPad showed serious signs of wear-and-tear, the usual 14-day return policy would be waived.

"And what about other stores?" You'll have to call and find out. She explained, "We can't speak to other stores' policies -- this is something our store has decided to do."

Wow. It's hard to digest all the stuff in this thread.

I was all about to skip the mini until I saw that it's 16GB at lowest end. Now I'm sold. Retina would be nice, but I dunno. I wanted a smaller iPad and this is that. I will have to wait until they get them in before I decide.

So did they just add the mini, or did they actually add an iPad 4? Or am I just confused? I'll have to watch the video when I get home tonight.

Regarding the new 13" Retina MBP, I'd happily trade a discrete GT620/630M for less price/weight/(more)battery life or all, which I'm assuming we got.

Also relax guys. They're probably just shifting over to an October-based update cycle for all things iOS. There won't be anymore March events if you ask my opinion. It's probably a transition.

They updated the specs of the iPad 3 and called it the 4. It will make more sense after you watch the video.

It's not gonna run well on anything requiring some graphics processing, is my point. I'm saying what's the point of buying this thing for $2000. The 15" with a dedicated GPU is $200 more.
The primary purpose of Retina is to enhance 2D assets. The integrated graphics will have no problems dealing with that. But yes, considering the normal MBP and the bigger retina version both have discrete graphics, it's a shame they have omitted it from this model.

And yes, it's a silly price, but with that display it literally in a class of its own (for now).

You're reaching. People want thin displays regardless if its mounted or not. My TV isn't wall mounted, yet the bezel and thickness were part of my criteria for purchase.

I'm surprised you don't get this.

I don't think the thickness really matters unless you're mounting it to a wall which is what many people do. If you're just putting it on a TV stand or inside a cabinet, the thickness does not matter. The aesthetics come into play with how it looks mounted to a wall which is what is driving that aspect. I have a nice TV that blows almost everyone else's away and the thickness makes not one bit of difference because I never see it. Most people don't. Plus with the iMac, it truly isn't even that thin once you see it from the side anyway.

You can. They're VESA compliant for all kinds of mounts

I know you can, but in general it's not done.

those have for several years been *the* benchmark for 13" power and performance. The GPU is fine for smooth OS performance. The only place it will lag is gaming or other GPU-intensive applications.

same iPad 2 resolution at 2" smaller. of course it's extremely sharp. the only people who suggested otherwise are boo-birds
.

it is literally the same resolution as the iphone 2g, 3g and 3gs. We've owned those devices... it's not "extremely" sharp. it's OK. it's passable. But it's not excellent.

Dat extra screen space. Plus the mini is lighter .. That $79 premium is easy to justify.

$79 premium?

16gb iPad Mini - $329
16gb Nexus 7 - $199

$130 difference or £110 in the UK.

32gb iPad Mini - $429
32gb Nexus 7 - $249

$180 difference or £150 in the UK.

I can help but think that the ipad 3 existed just to have something to announce in the spring.

I'm almost thinking that the iPad 4 only exists to throw in a lightning connector and generate some buzz before the holidays. Genuinely surprised that there's a chip upgrade but no screen/battery/thickness updates which would have definitely made the iPad 3 look like a compromise for retina.

Well doesn't the battery have to be slightly better to maintain usage times with the faster processor?

Probably the case, yeah. Which means that every spring they'll reveal the upcoming OS X, release it at WWDC in June and announce the new iOS, then release the new iOS at the iPhone/iPod event in September.

I'm just going to be curious to see how their Mac hardware cycle goes. They've started updating *lots* of Mac hardware at once; I'd expect to see them move on to maybe two Mac update events per year: one for all of the notebooks, and one for all of the desktops.

I don't want to descend into a Marty debate on something so obvious. Lets agree to disagree.

iPad 4 this March would make so much sense

- full redesign
- hot specs, all the iPhone 5 improvements
- makes the current iPad the cheap one and bam, no more 30 pin

It probably wont happen but this means that since this was a spec refresh, the iPad 3 will be around for another year and so will the iPad 2

At some point fairly soon, Apple has to retire the iPad 2 just to get rid of the old-style dock connector. But that sort of begs the question of what they're going to do about the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

But even at $250 people didn't seem to think it was expensive.

Well worth it, I did get $50 off of mine, I wouldn't trade it for a Ipad mini at even dollars because I am not invested in the Apple Ecosystem. Android is far better for my daily use

Hardware wise the Nexus will shit on this thing but it is pretty normal to buy an Apple product when you have invested so much into IOS, they know this and it is how they will always get away with the "Apple premium".

Much like the LIVE debates over in Gaming, they got into this space first and will keep charging a premium until the competition steps up. It is in Android/MS camp to effect this change

edit:nvm

I wonder if they were sitting on a bunch of panels (or still had the supply chain cranking) and instead of cutting them into aging phones, they're making minis out of them? Would give them a really fat margin.

LOL, keep stealth editing your posts and being condescending after being wrong, it's cute.
Again, I'm not believing any rumors until it's confirmed. Based on that I'm wrong?

Why am I talking to crazies who insult me first and then play the "oh, you are being condescending card".
Staples is already selling the 32GB model for $249.
But is the 16GB dropping to $199? Or is it being discontinued?

I just bought an ipad 3 on the 13th. Knowing this event was coming though I double checked to make sure I could return it within 30 days with no restocking fee but I really did not think I would have to.

I guess I should be happy though, I now get to get an ipad 4 on or near day 1 so it should stay current as long as any of these things do.

I have been having second thoughts though, and now that I have to return the ipad, maybe I'll wait for the surface or nexus 10.

Why do LCD TV's continue to get thinner? People want thin displays.

Well in that case I understand. When you have a wall mount display, the closer it can be to the wall the better. Here, they just made it thinner on the sides but it still has a fat ass. Don't see the point or what it bought them

Jesus it's like a Republican primary debate in here. The price drop is all but confirmed. Cling on to a lesser price difference if you want (lol), but it's officially changing in a few days, and has already changed in certain stores including Staples.

But is the 16GB dropping to $199? Or is it being discontinued?

Dropping to $199. 8GB is being phased out.

for text that small you'll probably prefer the nexus 7s ppi
