Amazon DD Sales Thread

Drove off a good poster who interacted with the community in a great way, because in a totally above board way he mistakenly offered to help people make their OT's more cool.

I think it's a damned shame. Reminds me of zero tolerance situations where kids get expelled from school for bringing nail clippers to class. Total overreaction.

Yeah pretty much. He was offering help (as in tons of screenshots and extra information) with making OTs. No "oh hey, publishers want loads of info in their OTs, they'll even pay you".

He was trying to help make OTs better than they are, and his heart was in the right place. Clearly he didn't know it was against the rules and it was a bit overboard to perma him like that, but *sigh*. Neogaf, i suppose.

Anyway yeah

NO TONY, SAY IT ISN'T SO!

You helped me waste so much beautiful money.

:(

I like Tony, but that post was beyond stupid. He had a special position to begin with, but that was kind of pushing the boundary of what is acceptable of an official representative of any company.

The less OP's are stupid PR pieces the better.

It would be different if a lot of OP's weren't already that way. See the Assassin's Creed: Revelations OT posted earlier in this thread.

Shame Tony got perma'd. Based on what I've read yeah clearly he didn't read the rules or ask a mod in first place. Besides that looked like he was trying to help without realizing how much trouble it was even suggesting it and of all things making a thread.

I'd stop talking too much about it here because people have been known to get banned for going off topic, but I wonder since he was an important factor of this thread, isn't it on topic?

So about that Demon's Souls 3 Awakening Edition going on sale soon?

That's how I saw it too, and going by his CAG post it seems his intentions were not at all malicious, but I guess that's how it goes. Time to dust off my CAG account then.

Yet another useful community member banned, yay for us? ...

Yes. Yay for us, in my opinion. Information about deals are nice, but the guy was openly entertaining publisher involvement in the creation of OTs. No thank you.

Well it's the Amazon deals thread and the Amazon deals guy got perma'd so I'd say it's on topic.

My two cents:

As much as I appreciate the deals (bought into two games total) I never thought it was a good idea to have a marketer post marketing on Gaf. And having his name and avatar the way they were should not make it OK. I mean what would Gaf turn into if every publisher and retailer had their own Gaf 'personas' posting glorified ads.

Secondly I can't comprehend how far up the corporate ass his head must've been if he was ignorant enough to suggest |OT|'s would and could be turned into advertisements. Seriously I can't comprehend why he thought it would be a good idea and he of all people would be handling the PR connections for it.

Evilore permabanning him made Gaf's integrity a little stronger.

Well to tbh the reason he even joined GAF was due to me making this topic which was originally the Winter sale deals from last year and after he saw how the reaction from GAF he thought he may as well join to help out like he has done on CAG and I think reddit.

Max Payne threa.. nvm I can't get banned for talking about this too much. Let's wise up and slow our roles.

Feh. He was merely trying to help provide access to better assets, like companies do with press kits, fan kits, etc. But hey, now it's better than before, because.... well I don't know what's better now. Whatever. ONE OF US, ONE OF US.

Tony might have had good intentions, but what would be the gain for the publisher? The material would be coming right from the PR department with the only goal to get their information and promotion (i.e. advertising) exactly where they want it. No thanks.

In the CAG post, he straight up said he didn't read the rules of OT's. So I don't see why there's any more to discuss. I don't think 'he didn't know better', and if he did, he was being willfully ignorant. There's an entire topic on here about how OT's work, and everyone knows it's easy to get banned on GAF, so you should read every rule.

ESPECIALLY if you've got a vested interest in marketing.

Specially today.

Like I said, this was a bad idea that somebody that wanted to help (I believe) without any ulterior motives that was already on the verge of what's acceptable (because of the rules) had on the worst day possible (eurogamer thing). He also didn't know how to express his "idea", as making a stupid OT (by some people standards) is enough to warrant a ban.

Perfect storm.

Which could have been easily explained to him rather than casting him out. The negative connotations of publishers having a hand in creating the content for a non-commercial forum are obvious, but also didn't happen yet. Just explain why it isn't welcome and lock the thread. Done.

Please, half the people on the gaming side have absolutely nothing to say and clog the holy fuck out of this place with chatroom-like inanity. Here's one guy who brings some interesting stuff to GAF, so explain why what he's asking is out of line instead of booting him.

It really should've been obvious to him why this was a bad idea. Most people don't get second chances on GAF when you make mistakes like that. That's just how it is.

It's not all negative. People were thankful and praised the fact that someone managed to get official max payne fonts from rockstar themselves.

It most likely made it easier to create the OT. It's a nice font.

As someone said earlier, I'm pretty sure he's been on thin ice for a while.

based on what? he was always transparent on who he was and what he was here for. he was helpful. he didn't insult anyone and was friendly to other gamers.

Tony might have had good intentions, but what would be the gain for the publisher? The material would be coming right from the PR department with the only goal to get their information and promotion (i.e. advertising) exactly where they want it. No thanks.

you can still criticize any game you didn't like even if the PR folk help with official screenshots. it wouldn't change anything. hell, by people making OTs for games we already give them free PR byt alking about it and buying the things.

I think the worse thing is that he was currently in talk about publishers about doing this. I mean, that's not his role at all since the place doesn't belong to him. Especially coming from someone which had a marketing position within Amazon.

We already had a huge thread about how OT were becoming more and more like PR pastebin which lead to the new rules about them. He could have read those or asked a mod about it.

I know it's to soon to make fun of this situation... but I can't believe publishers think someone actually reads the OP in OTs :I

Not reading the OP and trying to partake in conversation is bannable. Pending how ignorant the poster is, that is. Many members here post by just reading the title. OT's are no different and contain relevant info. That's the main reason for the new streamlined OT FAQ that GAF put together a bit ago.

Yeah, no. There is a huge difference there. OT's shouldn't be PR, they should be a short collection of essential information and a place to discuss the game.

You know, I totally get where Evilore is coming from in at a business perspective. He sells advertising space and here comes Tony, selling advertising on his forum (at no charge but Tony was certainly going to get some payroll benefits from it). They were circumventing the admins which is not cool.

It's not like people don't do this discreetly. I'm sure there was an arrangement that could have been reached.

Then again, fuck videogames.

Also I question what more is really needed for the awesome OTs here? Back in the earlier days of the internet when companies would release "fan kits" that had random shit like fonts, wallpapers, buddy icons. Maybe then it would make more sense to directly work with publishers, but I think the content we get now does the job. People also go out of their way to make unique OTs as well. I could see it being a problem down the line when GAF OTs no longer 'follow the requirements of a publisher's/developer's OT specifications". Still, sucks to see someone as helpful as Tony perma-banned.

I don't get it, why did everybody jump on Tony? I know it was against the rules, but really? Permabanned for that? Couldn't he just been warned and the thread closed?
He was already on thin ice for promoting deals in other threads besides this one. PR/Marketing stuff has been a touchy subject lately, and I think the very fact that someone would think it's okay to advertise/promote games for publishers on here is troubling.

I don't think he should have been banned for a mistake. The mods could have just told him never to do it again and shut the thread

There was no malicious intent on his part

if anyone makes an OT in the future, you can get fonts that game uses from the game website usually. in chrome right click inspect element and it'll show you whats on the site

they're usually in woff format, but you can convert/download them here in 2 seconds

images, assets and info on a game are simple enough to find with google. i guess tony had the right intentions but you really dont need pubs to make an ot

I don't want to step on any delicate toes but is this talk about |OT|'s benefitting from publisher interaction? Fonts? Screenshots? Banners and other assets? Really? REALLY?

How about an |OT| consists of basic information about the game, a few screenshots and links to trailers. No need for fonts and banners. No need for exclusive screenshots and video. Anyone who considers the first post in an |OT| to ve an outlet for their artistic design skillz should perhaps reconsider that idea.

Anyhooo I can't wait for Amazon Winter/Holiday sales and hope they try to one up Steam like they sort of tried during the summer :-)

Wow this is really helpful, thank you for posting!

I don't have to read through PR and product information to post in a thread, thank you very much.

I did not know that about fonts. Thanks for the info!

It's quite sad because it's obvious from reading the thread that Tony meant no harm and was willing to delete the thread. But nope, no second chances, no discussion, just permabanned and now we've lost a very helpful and nice guy. :-/

For a corporate guy I think he tried too hard to be a friend of the community and sometimes came off too strong. His OT/PR proposition was beyond tactless for this site.

'Amazon Video Gamer 1' incoming, problem solved, lol.

On topic, you think I have a chance opening a chat with Amazon and begging for Impulse Driven price matching on the Walking Dead?

I know Tony meant well but he was treated like any other poster (who had access to publishers) would in that situation. You don't read the rules, you get banned.

Time to add CAG back into my bookmarks, I suppose.
