Exactly how much GPU power do your programming tasks need?

Anyway, have a look at the HP Envy 15, and tell me if that's too large. They went for the Macbook Pro approach so it should be much slimmer than most 15" gaming laptops.

As much GPU power as possible, I'll be using it for 3D modelling and rendering so treat it as if I was looking for a gaming laptop.
Yeah the Envy 15 is a little too large, a 13" / 14" would be perfect.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of picking up the lenovo y480 with these specs:

Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM (2.3GHz, 6MB Cache, 3.3GHz Max Turbo)
8GB (4GB x 2) PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz
750GB 5400RPM Serial ATA 2.5" Hard Drive
14.0" HD (1366 x 768) TFT Color, VibrantView (Glossy), LED backlight, 1.0MP HD720p Camera
NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE 2GB
(WxDxH): 13.6" x 9.4" x 0.8" to 1.3" / 4.85lb.
SKU: 209384U

for around ~$700

What do you guys think?

Right now, there's....

The Lenovo Y480. Core i7 quad + GT 650M.

The Dell XPS 14. Its GT 630M has GDDR5 memory, but it's paired with a ULV processor, which is or isn't a problem, depending on how much CPU horsepower you'll need.

The Alienware M14x, which is a bulky 14".

Asus just started talking about it's new, upcoming 14" gaming laptop, the Asus G46. It will pack an i7-3630QM and GTX 660M, making it the fasted 14" when it releases. Someone who doesn't speak English got a hold of one and made a Youtube video. Should be releasing somewhere around the Windows 8 launch.

I want a good, powerful laptop that complements my new PC. Was thinking about this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834214729 .... Liking the specs a lot, SSD be damned. :P

Before I comment, may I ask the specs of your new PC?

shop.lenovo.com (check my link above) has the Y480 with i7-3630QM and GT 650M for $750.

I found a y480 with my specs for $650 on ebay, is the upgraded cpu and graphics worth the extra $100? If so, I might bite on the $750.

I'll say that yes, it's worthy of spending the extra $100 on, when you factor in that you'll not only get a faster CPU and GPU, but also a brand spanking new machine versus a factory refurbish, where the latter doesn't even net you a full year of warranty.

Refurbished machines have a history you don't know about, and that's too shady for me.

With tax, it now comes out to $807 =(. I don't know if I wanna go through with this. I was cutting it close to my budget of $700 when the laptop was $750, but another $50 tax? Is it worth it or can I get a better deal somewhere else?

If you can''t afford it, no need to go busto.

In defense of the eBay model:

The 640M LE can be overclocked to GT 650M levels, I believe. But Unknown Soldier actually has an unlocked LE, so I'll step aside on that one. The CPU difference is negligible.

My main thing was refurb vs new, but that's subjective, and up to you. The refurb is warrantied through September of 2013, so it's not like there's no safety net.

This is the best thing at $749 flat though. But it's 17.3" big.

Hi K.Jack, I'm looking at the Acer you've been recommending to others in this thread, and it looks like its great bang for your buck. Thanks!

What is your opinion on warranty options? Are they worth it generally? I got a nice one for free on my last laptop, but I'm wondering if its worth the investment this time around.

Edit: Also, as long as I'm bugging you, why do you think the Acer is better than the Lenovo Y480? Doesn't the Lenovo have the better CPU/GPU package? (The slightly larger screen size on the Acer doesn't matter to me.)

Edit 2: What do you think of this option? It seems on the face of things a good deal, and I would be willing to pay the extra amount for the superior graphics card. But is it worth the extra $100 in your opinion?

As far as warranty, I'd like to say that any notebook you want to keep for 2+ years deserves a 2 year warranty, but it also depends on how long that second year costs in relation to the cost of the machine. For instance, these $2k Sagers we discuss only ask $79 for a second year. Why the hell not then, or else be left with a $2k paperweight at month 13. But I'd feel differently, if a $500 laptop was asking $100 for year two.

@ Edit: you're comparing the 14" Y480 to the 17.3" Acer, not me. That's no small difference in screen size, side by side.

@ Edit 2: it all comes down to which size of footprint and weight you prefer. If you don't mind the extra heft, then sure, go Y580. But do note that one or two peoeple a page a go had some technical issues with the machine's graphics switching. Blaburn can fgo into much more detail than me, as he was affected.

Does anyone here play Railworks/Trainsim 2013? I am guessing the answer to my question is yes, but can I get a laptop for £500-600 that will play that game well? Something makes me think it is a little more demanding on GPU/CPU than I imagine. Thanks

Just for balance, I've had no problems with my y580 and its probably the best windows laptop I've ever owned. Great screen, great keyboard and trackpad, plays most things on high at 1080p. Yum.

Btw, any guesses on how a GTX660m will perform with need for speed most wanted? I know the PS3 version will be good so that's my safety net. But should my laptop be able to handle it with better quality and still have a stable framerate?

my gt 650m handles need for speed: the run quite well. especially on 1366x768. im sure most wasnted won't give u many problems. i'm still stunned that i can play f1 2012 in high on 1080p.

I bought a SSD drive for my laptop NP6370, and I have no idea how to install the SSD and make it the primary drive while moving my current hard drive to the secondary drive. How do i install windows in the SSD drive?
Anyone have a good link where they show step by step process ?
I'm okay to do a clean install on my ssd drive and nothing on the HD, I don't have any personal data that i want saved.

Wow,I got the same laptop a month ago and got the Samsung ssd two days ago. I want to do the same thing too, but don't know anything like you.lol

So, I'm looking for a good laptop between 13' and 14'. It needs to be able to handle some light to moderate gaming and portable enough that I don't feel bad every time I need to move it around. I'm fine with the 1366x768 but a 1920x1080 would be amazing. Though, it's not something I've seen in 13' and 14' laptops. So I'm fine without it if the rest of the package is good. I have a budget of around 800 to 1000.

I was previously set on the Sager 11.6' but that screen is just too small for me. My friend showed me his 10' netbook and even with adding the 1.6' it's just way too small for any kind of gaming.

I looked at some of the laptops on http://www.reflexnotebook.ca/ which is located in Montreal and gives press good prices. But they mainly stock Sager and the line for 13' and 14' laptops is pretty bad.

Any advice?

Can you go a little over 600?

Here's the User Manual, which details how to install/remove to and from both drive bays.

Lenovo Y480

Thought people should know the new beta drivers for the 7970 are out which fix almost all the enduro issues. The new benchmarks are equal if not better than a 680m in most of the results people are posting in this thread.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...12-11beta-major-driver-update-12-10-cap1.html

This card is turning out to be quite impressive for the price, the drivers arn't 100% yet either so the card can only improve.

That is pretty awesome.

But I'm probably still going back to Nvidia in 2013, unless AMD ups the feature set of their drivers. Things like Adaptive V-sync, SGSSAA, and driver-level Ambient Occlusion are making me really jealous.

Hey K.Jack, just wanted to pop back into this topic and thank you for your help on my previous posts, since they really did help with setting expectations and giving an idea what to be looking at. She ended up being able to expand her budget a bit, but also decided at the same time that she really wanted something with a backlit keyboard, so she ended up going with a configuration through HP's website. i5-2450M, geForce 630M 1GB, 8GB RAM, 750GB 7200RPM HD, 15.6" screen, and of course the backlit keyboard, for $665.

So, a bit higher cost than that Acer configuration, with the main differences being only 1GB as opposed to 2GB VRAM, but then 8GB as opposed to 4GB RAM, 750GB 7200RPM as compared to 500GB 5400RPM HD (although those two could have been upgraded after the fact), and a 15.6" screen. And of course the backlit keyboard. And $65 difference in price. But, still seems like an alright deal (unless I missed something, which is always possible).

All this looking at laptops keeps making me want to get a new one for myself. I have an HP dv7-3085dx, which was around $1250 when I bought it about 3 years ago, but is starting to show its age a bit. I've done some upgrading to it in the time that I've had it, notably sticking in a Intel 520 120GB SSD as the boot drive and moving the 500GB 7200RPM drive to the secondary drive slot (really liked the fact that it has two hard drive slots), switching out one of the RAM sticks to upgrade it to 8GB (which is the most it can support), and putting a USB 3.0 Adapter in the ExpressCard slot (because I figured, why not, may as well get some use out of it). So, it's still holding its own fairly well, and I don't do anything too intensive on it (most of the games I play are older, only newer games I really have are Diablo 3 and Skyrim), but, every time I look over newer laptops, I always have the urge to get a new one, and have to tell myself that I'm alright with the one I already have. Still, one of these days...

The bigger/faster HDD and RAM, plus backlit keyboard would definitely be worth $65 to me. Which HP is that, exactly? I may need to research it and add it to the recommendation list.

I don't blame you, I've always preferred Nvidia, only went with the AMD because of its pricetag, but on my desktop when I get back to Canada Ill be sticking with Nvidia.

Well, we put it together through a configuration of one of their dv6t-7000 laptops on their website, which at the time had a promotional offer of like 28% or $250 off. The configuration package that we put together had a base price of $934.99 before the discount taking it down to 664.99 (so saving $270).

It looks like that must have ended though, since it doesn't seem to be present as an offer anymore. What it probably was, was them trying to move out some of their existing Windows 7 packages (since, that was one of the things she was trying to do, is get something with Windows 7 before Windows 8 was the only option. Her previous netbook was running Linux as it was, so just moving to Windows 7 was a big enough transition), but it seems like that's all gone now, as are most of their options involving Windows 7.

Looks like at the moment they still have two of those offers going on, with their dv6-7014nr ($250 or 20.8%) and dm4-3170se ($200 or 22.2%), so those are still there to hop on if anyone is able to put together a decent configuration out of them before they go away as well.

HP is always cycling through a decent set of coupons. They're nice like that.

Last year I bought this Sager NP8150 w/ 6970M (desktop 6850) on day one of release, when the price difference between it and Nvidia's then flagship GTX 485M (desktop GTX 460) was identical to the +$250 7970M/680M situation today. I've honestly had zero major issues with the AMD card. It's been awesome, in fact, and I don't regret the purchase.

Honestly though I may not stand by my words. I also favor Nvidia, but in the laptop world their premium is so hard to swallow. If the 8970M follows suit with how the 6k and 7k series have stood up to Nvidia's flagship, I'll be stuck in the same exact dilemma again.

I really just want that Ambient Occlusion anyway.

Hey folks, looking for some advice.

Time for my son to upgrade his gaming laptop, he has a HP DV7 now, looking to upgrade. The killer is weight, the HP is about 5 1/2 pounds. I think 6 pounds is kinda the limit for him to easily carried around the house (he is 10).

Price point ~$1500

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Well, wait... which DV7 is this? By this, I mean, what GPU is in it?

So about that Y480 Jack, is this a really good deal?

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y480#.UIixV8XA85x

Edit: Oh what the hell, Lenovo Canada doesn't do the Y480 with the 650, just the 640 LE. God dammit Canada, I hate you so much.

That is shitty. Semi-relevant is that the LE is just a lower binned and clocked 650M, and it can be overclocked even higher than the stock 650M rests.

Hey all, need help.

Laptop was running fine, no issues. Suddenly I started getting warnings from Norton that Google Chrome is using a high amount of disk space. I went into startup and turned off all the programs that were deemed to use a significant amount of resources.

I even closed AdBlock Plus, lol. I'm still getting this warning. I performed a root scan with Norton Power Eraser, it found nothing.

Ideas, please?

Best I can offer is that Googling "'Google Chrome high amount of disc space" turned up some results worth investigating.

Let's ignore used laptops for now... Feel free to compare any of these laptops that I'm planning to buy very soon after I trade in my Mac. (I found myself NOT needing an ultraportable and running out of disk space as well as a general lack of gaming performance..)

Some notes after having a hands-on on most of the laptops listed:
  • All these laptops seem to have the same maximum brightness when it comes to their screens, but the Acer's screen is undersaturated and yellow-ish compared to others. The Toshiba has some vertical striping pattern on the whole screen which is usually unnoticable. The HP's screen's whites are perfect.
  • The Acer trackpad tracks rather poorly with sharp acceleration drop-off. The HP trackpad works well, but has a very rough surface. The Toshiba trackpad is what I feel at home the most - despite it not being clicky, the trackpad is very friendly to gestures and responsive, with a silky-smooth surface.
  • All these laptops are rather hefty. Don't even think about holding it with just one hand.
  • All of these laptops have keyboards that work equally well. The Acer has a numeric keypad, while the Toshiba has standard-style keys (like older PCs), which I prefer. (I might be wrong about the latter, since I'm typing from memory)
  • All these laptops have switchable graphics. They all default to using Intel HD Graphics 4000 while not gaming, which is still faster than the HD Graphics 3000. The GeForces and Radeons kick in once you get into games, for a world of awesome. Checking out NotebookCheck reveals that they should be able to handle modern games at around medium or high settings, even games that are released as recently as yesterday! Some even get maxxed out!
  • The Toshiba and HP are very colourful.
  • All but the Lenovo come with 750 GB of space. The Toshiba's hard disk is shock-proof. Makes sense for me - I drop things all the time.
  • All the laptops are rather sturdy, but I don't trust Acer or HP, not with negative feedback.
  • The Toshiba flies off shelves! Do people really like it?

Hello gamer laptop GAF,

I've been rocking 10/11" Asus netbooks for the last couple of years, but now it's time to upgrade. So I'm looking for a 13/14/15" laptop/ultrabook with which I can do some serious gaming. I've been looking at this thread for leads but unfortunately, most of the models are from the US, and I'm from Euroland.

My budget would be below 800€, ideally. Any models thatn you could recommend ? Bunch of thanks.

Cuteness Overload,

Have you tried the levono in person? I really like the trackpad on those.

Based on specs alone, I think I'd go with the acer. But if you expect to use it with the trackpad a lot rather than a mouse, then it's important to consider usability too

Nope, not yet.

All the laptops have chiclet-style keyboards.

I do consider good trackpads something important as when I'm outside I usually don't bother with the mouse.

I can get this Lenovo Y580 through my IBM Employee Purchase Plan - What do you guys think? The CPU has me a little worried, and it can't be upgraded, but the price is pretty great, saving ~€400 off retail.

I'm looking for a tablet PC with some muscle to it(as in, gaming laptop specs/discrete graphics card/etc). Does something like that exist? I haven't had much luck with my current searching efforts.

By tablet PC, I mean something equivalent to having a(hopefully decent) Wacom digitizer+pen for the screen.

I too wish you could get a quad core, but that looks like an amazing deal.

What you seek does not exist.

Is there anything else that's 14' and pretty good for gaming? I can't believe the NP2240 uses the intel 4000 instead of a proper GPU. It would have been perfect!

Hmm not sure. Its fairly zippy though (not near it now) Its just a few years old.

Next time you're near it, download and run GPU-Z, as it will say exactly what card you have.

Then we can figure out what the best upgrade path would be.

Alienware M14x and the upcoming ASUS G46. The former has a GT 650M GDDR5 while the latter will ship with a GTX 660M.

X post from windows 8 thread.

So I posted about this laptop yesterday.

http://m.bestbuy.com/m/e/product/detail.jsp?skuId=6941745&pid=1218816106471&ev=prodView

A few guys helped me with it. It's 100.00 off at Costco so I'm considering it. Question is, is there a better laptop in its class for around the same price? I love the touch screen so I'd want that too. Is having an i5 instead of an i7 a major downside? I know the resolution and weight are downsides. How about Acers reputation, what's that like? Sorry for all the questions, I haven't used a PC in almost 12 years.

Troll had posted some benchmarks of a PC with the same graphics card but an i7, would the benchmarks for this be significantly different because of that?

Thank you.

Is it just me or do hardly any laptops with ATI/AMD graphics seem to make their way to the UK? There are plenty of listings on NotebookCheck for US laptops with ATI graphics, and I see just a few posts up from here someone's posting about Singapore models with ATI graphics, but I can't seem to find any that are actually available in the UK. What gives?

Offtopic: I have an Sager 9170. Tried to hook it up to my tv via HDMI but I couldn't get the sound to transmit to the TV. Am I doing something wrong? I thought HDMI transmitted sound and video.

Might need to switch it to stereo. TV might not accept it if its sending multichannel PCM.

Is it just me or do hardly any laptops with ATI/AMD graphics seem to make their way to the UK? You don't really want ATI graphics anyways. Just get one with Nvidia.
