Need For Speed Most Wanted - PC Performance Thread

Looks pretty similar high/low. Maybe more noticeable at night/in the rain. Big difference in framerate?

It's not even that bad. Note, I didn't restart the game when changing these settings, not sure if that's required. Game doesn't tell you to.

Yep, looks like the car is identical - biggest difference is no water/reflections on the road. And some tweaks to the environment but nothing major

Wish there was a demo. Does EA ever do them?

The "hi-res" textures are more noticeable in Sethos' shots, look at the fastlane and cash only signs.

I wouldn't have thought textures would impact framerate that much. Bump up textures and then reflections if possible. I bet AO kills the framerate the most for least obvious benefit - especially when moving at speed

Guys, doesn't the game have built-in DX11 features? I remember reading about it on a link posted on the OT a few days ago...

If so, these features could be bringing down framerate, some DX11 features are heavy and if badly implemented I guess it could result in something like a 680 not getting those 60fps consistently.

I'll be running DX9 mode with my GTX285 and will post results both maxed out (Edit: maxed within what my DX10 card can do) and without AO (it's just useless in a racing game and in Paradise just brought the framerate down). I'll play without AO.

Reading this thread has made my heart sink :(

The recommended specs of a GTX 560 (or ATI 6950) are obviously not going to cut it given the lack of stable performance with 600 series cards.

Now I can maintain 60 FPS for the majority of the time I'm really enjoying the game; hope Criterion or whoever ported it will give it some post-launch TLC.

Above all else, I hope someone finds a good AA solution, because the jaggies absolutely destroy the image quality :(

Edit: Yowsers! I didn't notice how bad the game's texture filtering was until I posted that. Here's a near identical shot with NVIDIA Inspector 16x High Quality AF:

Need For Speed games are traditionally known for good PC performance and optimisation. Burnout Paradise was as well.

What happened here? :/

Don't know for sure, Hot Pursuit was heavily optimized in my view, ran at 60fps in pretty much every friend's computer I saw. Mine too. With these weird things going I can just see myself locking the game at 30fps (GTX 285) and running it maxed. I don't think lowering details will do anything by the look of things.

Anyone try using 1280x720 or similar resolution? I used to do that with my geforce 460 sometimes so I wouldn't have to turn down graphic options.

NFS games that aren't criterion based have good performance. NFS games that have come from criterion are flaky or really good depending on the system.

Burnout Paradise was fine. :/

These low/high comparison shots showing not much of a difference are pretty telling all on their own. Definitely the sign of a poor and inflexible port job.

is there a reason for criterion to cap the game at 60 with no means to unlock it?

hot pursuit was the same if i recall correctly.
anyone got a solution? or a decent way to contact criterion? ( ive tried mail and twitter )

it wasn't at launch, so this isn't surprising, imho. actually, right now i'm reinstalling Hot Pursuit to see how it runs these days with the latest drivers and patches.

HP ran great on my laptop and seeing as I'm travelling for work over the next few months I decided to get it for PC and not xbox. I'm optimistic I'll get a decent frame rate out of it.

So a 680 was having framerate dips? Fat chance of this running smooth on a 670 @ 1440p.

I'll hold off in hope of a patch.

:(

Wow.. I was hoping for some good news about NFS:MW. I still have the original disc for PC. I loved this game and this is a huge let down.

Another bad port job. DX11 is probably just DX11 features pasted onto the DX9 (consoles) based game. This just sucks.

I'll have to wait for a port now or just roll with Forza Horizons. M$ Really needs to get Forza running on PC. It would be so damn glorious.

Not sure, but some games do it because of physics issues (Skyrim, for example, goes apeshit above 60).

For those with framerate issues, apparently there's a way to lock the game to run at a (more fluid) 30 FPS.

Edit the file C:\Users\******\Documents\Criterion Games\Need For Speed(TM) Most Wanted\ config.NFS13Save' setting the LockTo30 value to true.

Hot Pursuit always ran very good for me. I can even manage supersampling nowadays.
what is 'very good' for you? I dont get a locked 60 at 1080p on my 7970 with hot pursuit. If I'm CPU limited my perfmon sure as hell doesn't think so. Yeah I never dip below 45, but the game switches back and forth from a smooth 60 to a juddery less than 60 constantly. I'd love to know how to get it running at 60 fps on my PC :/

Locked 60 FPS, but I'm on NVIDIA (GTX 580).

Are these bugs?

Nope, those are actual intros for the "ambush" races, where you need to escape a pack of cops. A lot of the intros have some type of psychedelic effect or camera pans from weird perspectives, but the ambush intros turn the WTF level to 11. It's charming in a way.

Wow. Seems like a port that's all over the place actually. I assumed everyone (apart from the unlucky 1% of people that buy a PC and have issues with it) ran it even better than me if I was maxing it out, but it seems there's a good piece of the pie that's from people that get some sort of framerate issue with the game. Sure I always ran it at 1680x1050, but on a old GTX285 I maxed it out with 4xAA applied in inspector. 60fps, very (very) rare dips. 2xAA was a perfect 60.

HOW is it possible a card with like what... Is the 7970 two GPUs in one? With like triple the power of mine can't make it at 60 all the time?! Shady coding with this port. It baffles me.´

Not a brag post, in case some of you were wondering. It just baffles me, it makes no sense. I seriously expect now that MW will be all over the place on this aspect too. Right now 680s can't max it out, I don't expect mine will either, but I mean, it's a racing game, from Criterion. They know how to optimize their games on consoles, be it 30 or 60fps. And with that, their PC ports (at least to me) come out performing better than most console ports around, because they already develop their game with performance in mind. But this time it's definitely gonna leave a sour taste in us... I'm prepared for a 30fps lock. But it's not really the same on a racing game.

Just played about 20 minutes before I go to bed.

i7 860 @ 3.8
8gb ram
SSD
GTX 680
1080p

The framerate i'm getting is really bad in a lot of areas. I didn't put fraps on but it looked to be 20's or less at times. I saw someone mention AO & Vehicle reflections helping, but turning those down to medium didn't seem to change much. Also the pause menu took a good 3-4 seconds to come up when I was almost done playing while it was instant when I first started.

Maybe related to performance? The controls feel really bad to me (360 controller), I played many many hours of Burnout Paradise and quite a bit of Hot Pursuit and this feels way off. I can't even dodge traffic because the steering is so sluggish. Feels like a huge delay when turning and anything actually happening. Curious what anyone else thinks about this.

Here's hoping for some patches.

What type of CPU do you have? Intel or AMD? I'm really surprised considering you have a 7970 too.

Part of the delay is some of the cars have awful handling.

There's at least one car, one of the Porche's that I can weave in and out of traffic without any problems.

I played for an hour, I really like it. I didn't run fraps or anything so I can't comment on FPS.

Yeah, was about to pre-order since it comes out on the 2nd here.

will get on christmas or something I guess. This is kinda heartbreaking after Paradise and Hot Pursuit becoming my favorite (and gorgeous on PC) racing games

Same here - unlocked via VPN, played for an hour, did a few races and got into a level 6 police chase in an Alfa, hid in an underpass with the engine switched off and got away after a 10 minute pursuit ;) The game is exellent; I got to grips with the handling really quickly (I'm using an Xbox controller) but the frame rate drops are annoying.

I'm currently using an Asus overclocked GTX 570 CUII and for the most part the game runs great and then on occasion the framerate takes a dive. I've left the graphics options alone so maybe I need to drop things sliders back to medium if EA/Criteron don't fix the issue sharpish. Criterion did say in an interview with Games.on.net that an Nvidia 500 series card would play MW with all graphics options at their maximum levels...maybe not given the current state of the game.

Games.on.net said:
Will Most Wanted need a very fast PC to run at the highest graphical details?
Criterion's Leanne Loombe said:
A modern quad core PC with an AMD Radeon 6000 series or NVIDIA Geforce 500 series can run the game with highest details settings.

They really need to stop forcing this piss filter on us with no option to turn it off. Seems like it's in pretty much every EA title recently.

What the... hell no to that. Its a racing game it needs to be atleast 60fps.
