Vita PSN Game And Service Thread

These "professional" reviewers...how about reviewing Vita games on their own merits, except continuously drawing comparisons to consoles and using them as the measuring stick for a handheld? If you can't actually describe them and need to resort to similes or tired metaphors, I'm sorry but you're not that good at critical writing- try writing short stories or something.

Someone just pointed this out on the Vita subreddit on Reddit - the music tracks are WAY off balance. Try going in game and putting the music on, then cover the left speaker. Then cover the right speaker.

The way to fix the problem is to change the setting. Instead of left+right you need to set it to either left or right only. This happens to me during movie playback, not music. Not sure about custom music during gameplay.

How much are you at now? I stopped.

Well I stopped at 20,000 last night and now I'm at 34,000

Maybe we Vitabros can threaten to file a class action lawsuit against the entire gaming press for libel against the Vita and its games, and all of the sites would have to retract their negative statements. It's worked before!

So torn between the Vita and my current PSP 3000 with 15 UMDs with 12 of them unbeaten...

The crazy indecisive person in me is saying I should just stick with the PSP 3000 until I have finished:

  • Killzone
  • Resistance
  • Persona 3
  • Ys OoF
  • Motorstorm
  • Corpse Party
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • God of War GoS
  • Vice City Stories
  • The Third Birthday
  • Little Big Planet

I do at least have Burnout Legends, Corpse Party, Ys OoF as Digital copies

This is uh a stupid question because I've never actually bought a Vita game used.

You can't get trophies on a used Vita game? Really? :/

Sure you can! I bought LEGO Batamn 2 off of Gamefly last week ($15.89 shipped), and the Trophies work just fine. I got an warning about existing user data, so I just deleted the save files, deleted the game data from my Vita, then popped the game back in and let it re-install the icon. Good to go.

All UMD's? Anyway play your PSP UMD games first. Once your done, sell the UMD's and the PSP. Then focus on Vita and buying any more PSP games on PSN.

It's pretty obvious that the sales of their early western 2011 PSP releases didn't do as well as they were expecting. There's a reason why they never bothered with Lord of Apocalypse for PSP/Vita in the west, nor did they make a fuss about Final Fantasy III being released on PSP in the west either. They're done with that platform.

As for VC3, IIRC SEGA has straight up said that's not coming over because VC2's sales weren't good enough.

I'm surprised that we even got the psp version of FF3..

And don't even get me started on vc3...the fucking short sightedness of Sega ensured that vc2 was a bomb in the west just because the thought they could sell more vc in japan on the ps3... And I remember hearing that Vc2 did not do significantly better, so really, they killed that series off themselves... I really hope that fan translation of vc3 is eventually finished...

The vita is in a shitty position when it comes to the gaming press. It's constantly being compared to home consoles and PCs which isn't fair considering that we know it's less powerful (but, um, slightly more portable) but it isn't compared to other handhelds.

Take Most Wanted. If you are comparing it to the PS3 version (i have both) and you say the PS3 version is a 9 then yes, the Vita version is probably a 7 or 8.

But, if you take Most Wanted and compare it to every other big portable racer on the Vita, 3DS, DS, iOS and Android it's easily a 10/10 - hands down the best and most ambitious racing game for a portable platform.

It seems no professional reviewers are looking at the Vita as a portable device though and instead everything gets compared to consoles which we know have more power than the Vita, so Vita reviews will always be low. I also think the utter contempt that a lot of the gaming press has for the device doesn't help (which doesn't come across so much in their writing but most podcasts loooooooove to take a shit all over the thing).

MLB The Show and FIFA are the two best portable sports games i've ever played. Neither cracked 80 on metacritic.

This is not helped by the fact that when first revealed, Sony practically bragged that this was a ps3 in your hand...and seemed to insinuate that ps3 games can be easily ported to vita... This is obviously not the case and instead, but the damage has been done

Sony needs to reassess their message on the Vita... Console on the go is nice, but it'll always be compared to... Consoles...

Quick question for the people in this thread.

Did you chose the Vita over the 3DS? If so why?

Just curious as I am tempted by the $145 3DS target has.

3 reasons:

No. 1: Hatsune Miku Project Diva f
No. 2: Ys: Celceta, Sea of Trees
No. 3: Phantasy Star Online 2
No. 4: (Yes, I lied, 4 reasons) I've had Wipeout 2048, Super Stardust Delta, and Gravity rush to tie me over while I waited... and still waiting for the first 3 reasons, add Persona 4 Golden and DJ Max Technika Tune and that's pretty much my reasons for getting the Vita.

Yeah I mean, if they're going to compare the Vita version to the console version and knock it because its not graphically as good, then they should be consistent and knock the console version's score because its not graphically as good as the PC version.

Well, in this case there is no standar PC version to compare. Compare it with a pro-gaming $3000 PC? With a decent $900 PC? Or with a $250 PC?

But, yes, most of the review complains about not having the same graphics as the PS3 version, that is being completly naive. And unfair, because you can't compare a game on handheld with console, you have to compare it with the other handheld games of the same platform.

For example, those awful reviews of PocketGamer or IGN

The case of PocketGamer is specially malicious because they don't talk of the compromises of the iOS version. And if they are mentioned, they're justified. iOS version don't have free world, is a set of fixed races (only 10 tracks). So they can get good graphics because they don't have to load a free world, only a track, where all is staged. This is not mentioned in the iOS review, that they score with a 9 (Vita version got a 8).

I didn't choose one over the other, but I did buy a 3DS on Black Friday because I was tired of waiting for the Vita(in 2011). It was somewhat of an impulse buy.I kinda regret it, I'm not big on Nintendo franchises and the 3D "coolness" wore off rather quick.

If you like Nintendo franchises though, I would say it's a good buy. Not a bad handheld(XL looks a lot better though), it's just not for me.

I'm more than satisfied with my Vita and it's selection of games so far, best purchase I've made in a long time.... I also have an iPad, but I really regret buying that, more so than the 3DS. I can't sell it though as my girlfriend decided to keep it for herself.

I would think standard PC version would be how most PC gamers play their games, which is on medium to max settings. And on those, the graphics are far superior to the console versions. I mean, I don't think people review PC games on low settings. So there is a sort of "standard" when you're dealing with PC games, especially reviews.

This is not to mention that comparing a portable version to a console version of a game is even crazier than comparing a console version to a PC version. If I'm checking a review of a game, I want to know how it is for that platform and relative to other titles on that platform. I don't say "I wonder if I should get the console version or PC version of NFSMW". I already know which platform I want it on, so I want to know how it is on that platform, regardless of the other. If I'm reading a review of NFSMW for Vita, I want to know how good of a racer it is on the Vita, not whether it fails or succeeds to live up to the ridiculous standard of a power-hungry console.

If there are significant compromises, bring it up. If it turned out the Vita version was the same as the iOS/Android version, I would want to know. Otherwise, don't bring in nitpicky unrealistic comparisons like "the graphics aren't as good as the console versions".

To me it's ovbious that it shouldn't be compared to an $XXX PC, it should be compared to the game running maxed-out. It's not the game's or the reviewer's fault if I don't have a PC powerful enough to match the optimum experience.
