Can anyone update me on the provisional ballot stuff? Last I heard they were in court about the directive. Haven't really caught myself up since then.

Given that many proclaimed Bush's foreign policy of intervention and drone attacks were objectively immoral, it makes sense to ascribe that same level of immorality to Obama's policies, which have scaled back in some areas, escalated in some areas, but have more or less maintained the status quo.

But many folks forget about the great moral urgency once their guy is in office.

Same can be said about the war on drugs, and throwing innocent people in jail who have complied with state medical marijuana laws.

So what you're saying is:

Input -- List of issues in the US presidential election:
- Drone war
- Human rights abuses associated with War on Terror
- War on drugs
- DEA prosecutions of those buying medical marijuana legally in their states.

Output -- Both candidates are exactly the same. I don't actually agree with this even on the basis of these four issues, but I'll accept this for the premise of our discussion. Hell, I'll even throw in "corporate overlords", "indebted to bankers", "war and force projection", and whatever the other Rage Against The Machine examples were from that one video about the 2000 election.

Do you see anything missing from this formula? The answer is... every issue that isn't those issues. Even if those issues are the four most important issues to you, and I'm trying to imagine a voter for whom that's the case and not just some post-materialist / Maslow-satisfied fantasy, there are still other issues. There's taxes, education, healthcare, VA, transportation, the supreme court, funding for science and culture, the nature and number of foreign wars you would expect in the next 8 years, interaction with the senate and the bureaucracy, the debt and deficit and budget priorities, women's issues, trade policy, intellectual property policy, gun laws, state subsidies for faith, national parks, labour relations and collective bargaining, what kind of music the president has on their ipod, 4th of july fireworks...

Each of these has more or less salience for America at large and you personally, but it's simply not possible that the four issues above are the only four issues that affect your life. Anyone who knows about the drone war is at least a medium information voter, so they're immersed enough to know better.

Now, it may be the case that Gary Johnson is the best match or Jill Stein is the best match or whoever is the best match, but it is simply not possible that the two major party candidates are exactly equal in every way.

I don't think gathering a large mass of people to cause disruption and shout at people is democracy. Some people may deem it necessary when the regime they live under is sufficiently oppressive to their interests, but it isn't democracy.

Peaceable assembly is one of the most basic rights an American has.

He did but like much of what he has said it was found to be a lie.

Possibly, but it was part of his Massachusetts plan. And health insurers have found it to be a PR win, so the pre-existing condition thing isn't going anywhere. It's worth its weight in marketing.

Unless I guess you think Romney is some kind of insane fascist and will declare covering pre-existing conditions illegal. Which I think Rusty might.

You can't really compare today's Romney with Massachusetts Romney. Two different people.

Then his spokesperson immediately took that pledge back after the first debate. Lasted less than an hour.

I think his temporary stance was that he would basically keep everything people like about the healthcare bill and just get rid of the parts that were put in place to pay for it.

Its crazy to think an out of state group can come to your polling station and demand your ID. That's going off the deep end.

No he just won't do anything when it inevitably starts happening again. With no way to pay for some very expensive illnesses the insurance companies will decline individuals with pre-existing conditions and there will be no hope for them down the road since Romney has no plan for healthcare.

He may not be a fascist, but he sure is insane.
