The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I'd be more inclined to agree if the argument was that GiantBomb was "bad at games". If you look you'll notice more comments tend to pick on Brad more in particular which then doesn't really follow through logically.

They might also be better at the rest of those things. I've seen Ryan and Patrick quicklooks that are absolutely maddening for many of the same reasons.

Tank tank tank kind of looks ok. I can imagine my kids enjoying trying to blow me up as kong.
But multiplayer death match seemed skewed, with one player having the gamepad they get to see both that and the TV, but the player on the TV doesn't see the gamepad. Should just be split screen to be fair.

This. The Rising quicklook didn't really bother me as for that reason I don't expect them to be good at the game right off the bat, I do find some of their lack of preparation for quicklooks a little embarrassing sometimes though.

Especially considering Giantbomb is basically a videogame wikipedia, they should at a bare minimum look up some of the basic facts beforehand like release date/price/platforms etc.

OK, that quicklook of Scribblenauts has me sold. My little boy would have hours of fun working stuff out and making up crazy things.

Does it look like a step forward from the ios version? My kids like that a lot but I think playing on a big TV could be fun

Yeah, Scribblenauts really has neat ideas, but the controls look downright terrible.

Also, it's running in 720p? I thought devs were boasting that it was running in 1080p?
Think it was Patrick that said that, who knows.

Btw question about rising, what does ninja run do?

Is there really no dodge mechanic?

its hard to focus at playing/talking. A lot of the time they miss on screen hints. Not because they are bad....they simply aren't focused

Watching the Scribblenauts QL just makes me wonder why the second (TV) screen is there at all. Everything is shown on the controller. It's basically just an iPad game at that point. Except the iPad version only costs $1.

Looks really cool for multiplayer. You can type out things on the pad while the other players do things in the game.

Man, Metal Gear Rising looks incredible. Hopefully it will somewhat mellow my bitterness that Bayo 2 is Wii U exclusive.

Shame though that Vinny, Ryan or Jeff weren't on that QL, as they all played through Bayonetta and really liked it. Would have been nice to hear their thoughts.

Patrick saying Bayonetta didn't have a dodge button disappointed me a little though.

yeah, i really sucked at the demo but i figured that out. and it was killing me seeing how he fought the dog/cat/chainsaw monster thing at the end. hell, even i could get it to call in reinforcements quicker than him and i suck at these types of games. but brad is one hell of a gamer, i'm part of team brad. once he gets used to it i'm sure he will do fine. i think he just takes a little longer than some to get the basics down. once he does, watch out. i would love to see another quick look after he spends some time with it.

People should lay off Brad, I played the demo a couple of months back, and as far as I remember, there is no indication extracting the spines gives health. I didn't know it when I played. I knew it restored your blade time, but if you don't think you're low, there's no obvious reason to extract the spine.

And Scriblenauts still looks like garbage.

I've personally never given Brad any crap about his playing abilities. It's just that one instance, I played the demo completely blind to any media information on it, and after they introduced the whole cutting mode the very first thing I noticed was the square indicator. In a game to me I automatically assume that's something I have to hit, so when I ran around in the actual level...that's what I did, hit the square indicator and a button prompt comes up and then I naturally hit that. People give Brad too much crap, but they need to watch videos when he's actually learned the mechanics of a game, he's pretty damn good. I'm not pained at his entire playthrough of Rising, I'm pained at him not cutting the indicated areas, and wondering where to cut.

I agree that there is hardly any information given to you in Rising, but that particular feature I felt didn't need a 2min explanation on. They introduce sword cutting and when they introduce it that indicator comes up, that should all the information you need on that particular feature. It's one of those "what does cutting this do? Okay now what does hitting the button prompt that comes up when you cut X do? Ooooh okay. Committed to memory, on to the next."

Then again I could be extra hard for the simple fact most things videogame or even UX related in general are ridiculously obvious to me that might not be to others. I chalk my ability to figure things out quickly due to my traumatic childhood with Sonic 3 and the circus level. :(

#TeamBrad for life though.

I only played the iOS version for a few minutes and then gave up so I can't really say. This one looked really fully featured from the quicklook. Adjectives, Nintendo IP's and a big overworld with cool multi layered puzzles. It even allowed you to make your own objects and script them if you want to which would add to the longevity if your kids are old enough to work it all out.

I was only listening for parts of the MGR quick look but Brad (with Patrick helping) did well to beat that final boss. If they enjoyed the combat as much as it seemed like, then using the Christmas break to play thru Bayonetta would be a good idea. It's such a rewarding game, even on Normal but especially on Hard when you start really needing to use different weapons, accessories and strategies.

It honestly doesn't look very good at all. The same problem that plagues all the other iterations plagues this one - controls. For 99 cents, I tolerate it on iPad, but I won't be paying the Wii U game's price to do it there. No thank you. The game has so many good ideas, but then fails in the implementation of the actual game once what you've called into existence shows up.

Tank Tank Tank looks.... like a game I would never buy. I'm sure there will be a lot of families/younger kids that really enjoy it on launch day, but that QL did nothing for me.

Man, MG: Rising looks so fun.

And I remember being really annoyed that KojiPro had handed over the reigns to Platinum when the news first broke. Haha...oops.

Platinum is a really stellar developer. I can understand the "eh, it's not KojiPro it won't be what I want from it", but Platinum can nail the cheesy over-the-top stuff as well as them.

Man, Spy Hunter, Rampage, and Sinistar are so fucking rad.

Edit: Oh and Joust, fucking Joust, man.

but does it have gorf? i swear, these midway collections never have fucking gorf.

edit: i checked. no gorf. what does a man have to fucking do to get a little gorf in his life? i'm not buying a cabinet.

Forget "oh x sux at dis game I am raging!!!" it's this kind of complete and total misinformation that irks me the most (though I've also come to accept that Giant Bomb will regularly talk with a heavy dose of inaccuracy). Bayonetta has no dodge button? REALLY!? What about the one that an entire fucking gameplay mechanic is centred around!?

*Ahem* And thus ends my unreasonable internet outrage. Apologies for being a jerk.

Time to watch all the game room quick looks again. The best endurance run they ever did.

I watched all of those in reverse order recently, thinking it would be really funny and they would slowly get more and more excited about Game Room. I had forgotten they were pretty bummed out by the third video so it didn't work.

omg tj&e looks terrible. the characters animate at like 2 fps and move sooo slow

It was fun back in the day. There really isn't anything like ToeJam and Earl 1, the closest thing I can think of is Zombies ate my Neighbors, and that's a very different kind of game.

The Okami quick look wasn't great. I know that no one is playing it for review or anything, but that was a very slow bit of the game to show. They basically spent 12 minutes in cutscenes, and ran from one area to the next and that was it. Going through the first dungeon would have been a much better example of what that game really is.

If there were people willing to defend Jet Set Radio, I will accept the mantle of defending Toejam and Earl until the end of days.

It's too good of a game for you damn plebs.

Patrick was obnoxious in that quick look, damn. Been asked to slash a few times, and presumes it'll be some huge challenge throughout? You can hardly blame user incompetence on the game design.

At least he didn't pretend to have played GodHand (which is on PSN, Brad), so that's something.

And rocket shoes! And spring shoes! And wings!

What an amazing piece of work.

I dunno, I still think the game is pretty boring. Even when it came out the only real way to play it was 2 player otherwise it's a bit of a tedious borefest. Really easy, as well.

I played the demo and it's just a bit, eh. 400pts and maybe I would've picked it up just to run through.

I've never played it with one player, I bet it sucks shit then. You have to play it co op. Just have to.

Yeah, trying a little hard there, Pat.

All of Patrick's QLs are terrible because instead of focusing on the game he just talks on and on about tangential topics as if we care about which game industry people he knows or how much he (pretends) to know about everything OTHER than the game. It's as if he's trying to show off his knowledge of the game, but since he hasn't actually played it and is only basing it off what he's read and heard, he is unable to say anything insightful and comes off as bring pretentious.
