Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

Several people I know play CoD exclusively for the Zombie stuff. Sometimes I join in and it's pretty fun. I have no idea why people dislike it. Honestly, I think it's the best horde mode available on consoles.

It's not about the quality. I just don't come to CoD for that kind of gameplay and it bothers me a good third of my purchase is a mode I absolutely have no interest in.

I think you're missing the point hes trying to make. A lot of people come to CoD for the Zombies now. It doesn't really matter how Jeff, you, or I feel zombies mode generates sales.

I'm just explaining why I don't like it, making a point of "what you say doesn't matter" is stupid and is probably not his intent.

edit: this post turned out to be a little harsh on re-read! pretend I used "silly" instead!

I disagree about it being the best horde mode, it's a pretty good mode but doesn't come anywhere close to Gears Horde or Halo's Firefight.

I think I saw someone say that their download speeds for Giant Bomb videos were slow.

I have just got home and they are also slow for me. Around 350 KB/s as opposed to 3.5 MB/s. I've tested my internet speed and it's the usual 30 Mb/s.

Seems like there may be a problem with Giant Bombs's video server.

Jeff posted something that might be related to your problems.

If you're using Google DNS, don't. They seem to pick a weird, long path to our particular Amazon cluster that makes everything run like garbage.

If you're not using Google DNS and it still runs like garbage, I have no idea. But I'm pretty sure we're moving all our video off of Amazon when the new site launches, so hopefully that'll lead to better speeds.

I have a friend that loves Zombie mode and I've played quite a bit of it with him but I just don't get the draw. In the beginning when you're maintaining defenses there seems to be potential but it always reaches a point and relatively early on where you just run in a circle and shoot backwards into mindless bullet sponges.

That's disappointing because I use Google DNS to improve several other services.

Barring something weird, DNS does not determine routing. That's all on the routing tables between your ISP and Giant Bomb's servers.

Yeah Google DNS is a lifeline for a lot of people. Probably the last thing you want to run into a conflict with.

Out of curiosity, why do people uses the Google DNS? Is it just because their default DNS provided by the ISP are crappy?

I'm curious since I never had to use something other than my ISP DNS since I've switched to broadband in 1998.

I don't even know what Google DNS is.

Download speeds have been fine for me. It's only today I've had any download speed issues.

Edit: I just tried downloading the ZOE HD Quick Look and it's downloading at normal speed.

Mainly for speed reasons, as many providers have crappy DNS service. I don't think it is a reasonable measure against most "professional" censoring efforts (but some companies or countries filtering efforts might be subverted using Google DNS). Another, similar, service is OpenDNS.

If you want to speed-check, get http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm (you'll have to enter your providers DNS servers manually, otherwise your router will always be first).

I just gave up on streaming content from their site. It's slow and weirdly pixelated, even on HD. I always go to youtube, which is why I think we should start posting the youtube link to QLs in the future along with the link to the GB site.

That's their players fault - if you have premium, go for the "HTML5" option.

Have you read his review?

Yes, and I still don't get it. His claim of having a huge influence on the way the story plays out doesn't seem to actually be reflected in walkthroughs on YouTube (I'll have played the game myself in a few days time - maybe then I'll see it the way Jeff does). So far, it seems like the typical scripted CoD experience with some window-dressing to me. I'm not convinced a Blops 2 can rival even a Dishonored in terms of "player agency", like Gerstmann seems to think.

Quote from Jeff's review:
The Black Ops II campaign lets you make choices that can wildly impact the events that follow. [..] And others have a direct impact on who lives and who dies. It's not that every single choice is incredibly vital and Earth-shattering. It's that you're never quite sure that you're doing the right thing or behaving in the right way, and the route to what you'd probably consider the "happiest" version of the ending isn't clear. In a year filled with games that handle player choice in different ways, the Black Ops II campaign manages to be right up there with the best.

The best choices are the ones where you're not even aware there was a choice.

The HTML5 player is also kind of shit though, not the quality but skipping in videos sucks so much. If only they would fix that.

Btw using google DNS is actually pretty effective against censorship here, basically the ISPs don't really want to block stuff but if the court says they have to, they do, but only in a way that it's as easy as changing your DNS to make it work again.

You live in China or something?

Does HTML5 have scrubbing/skipping? If not then meh.

China is exactly the kind of place that shit wouldn't work. ;)

Denmark and I just want to get my ubuntu releases from piratebay. We also got around four thousand other sites blocked, most of them no doubt for good reasons but the system is kind of fucked.

You can skip around, the problem is it won't tell you how long you are skipping in time wise and it won't tell you how long the videos are. It's such a small thing but it annoys me to no end.

Dragonball Z HD quicklook is unavailable in my country on youtube. What. The. Hell.

Youtube auto blocking certain stuff. Tested talked quite a bit about how silly it is and their videos quite often gets taken down because of, for example a news company claiming to own everything they upload and tested then uploaded the same clip/song (which they also gotten permission to use), youtube will then autoblock tested or giantbombs stuff.

Oh yeah, they got robots on that stuff. It's pretty stupid since a robot can't interpret videos and form its own opinions or love.

I believe the entire staff has said that they find events such as those or foreign trips to see a single game to be a waste of time.

I think that was on the bombcast involving the Games Journalism talk. The gist of it is that at the end of the day, they just want to review the games and extraneous bullshit just hinders their ability to do so because it is honestly just about the games.

I sometimes wonder if there's a joke that I'm not in on when it comes to AMV having Linkin Park. Like... 90% of them have it. At this point, do the kids in that age group even know who Linkin Park is? Have they ever heard that one popular Linkin Park album(the one that ALL the songs in the AMVs are from)

Linkin Park, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z. The only things that will endure after the world ends.
