Video: Bronies (grown men) invade little girls' section of Toys R Us

Can you blame them?

These were made for them and there are little girls trying to get to them. I would be elitist as well. Fuck sake, they'll probably spend more on the toys than the kids "mommy n' daddy" will and that's more helpful for the economy than some brat begging for ONE toy. They'll buy at least three each.

And worse is that the kids will probably take them out of the packages and PLAY with them.

Seriously, parents fucking suck these days that they don't teach kids the value of money and collectables...all those toys being fingered up.

Go outside and play ball brats, save the action figures for us adults.

Actually, looking at that infographic, there is one thing that stands out, that might help explain my perception of (a healthy segment) of the fandom as "different" from other fandoms:

Maybe I'm either naieve or ignorant, but I can't really think of other pop-culture fandoms that describe their obsession in this kind of language. It sounds as if the show is more "important" to these Bronies in personal ways than I've encountered with other groups.

Well do remember that bronystudy.com is a site made by a psychologist who apparently "didn't understand" what the whole deal was and apparently needed to study the fans about it. Such a study seems pretty atypical in general. And seeing as it was done by a psychologist, its not really a surprise that he would take some small event or correlation and blow it up into some big life changing, personality defining thing. That's basically what their entire job is.

But I don't know. If a lot of people are saying that this explains themselves, then maybe it does. I've never been into the music scene, but on the outside it seems like there are a lot of people that like to use the music they like as a thing that they can use to define themselves as a person.

Now that I think about it, I can see some members of the fandom using it as a new form of counterculture. Media and culture has gotten pretty dark over the last 20 years and we've become more accepting to punks and goths, so maybe a better way to rebel is to just do this. You do have to admit that bronies are getting a lot of hate and attention as a subculture, so if rebelling was the goal, they are achieving it pretty well.

does horse armour regret making this thread lol.

peeps should know pones is srs bsns on gaf.

Eh i think its an enjoyable subject to talk about. There's a lot of varying opinions to discuss, and the subject is light enough that no one should get too offended by any of the debates that spring from it (unless someone does something silly like bring gay marriage into it).

Why do bronies need a defence force? Fans of other shows that most people dislike don't seem to get or need any defence force. There must be something about bronies that attracts these defender types.

Guessing a lot of the people saying MLP skews higher than 6 don't have kids. I feel like a lot of single college age people greatly underestimate how smart young people are. I solved Ocarina of time when I was 7, and I bet a lot of people here had a similar experience. It may have the odd pop culture reference, but from the few episodes of the show I've seen it definitely seemed to skew pretty damn young.

Did anyone mention what they were trying to buy? They kind of looked like trading cards but I couldn't be sure.

I can agree with this. I can't imagine anyone is watching this show for the very occasional reference. Still doesn't mean that you can't enjoy it just because a 7 year old can also enjoy it, as you bring up, just good nintendo game.

Why are those quality or whatever -- targeted more at a 18-25 year old male demographic -- versus those bigger pony toys in the isle? They look the same but bigger.

Is it a collectable thing, like ultra-rare ponies, shiny ponies, gold ponies, etc?

i dont know why the people in the video said they were for older people.

there are hard to find ones like shiny metal ones and glitter ones, but they are just small toys, they are collectible but a kid could play with them.

i dont know if young kids should have em though, cuz they are really small. they could choke on em or something.

They sound kind of like crazy bones. Can't say I necessarily approve of the video, but I can understand wanting collectibles/rare items.

Pft, blind-buy or bust. I never understood the appeal of collectibles that you could just go out and find by picking up the packaging and looking at it.

I, personally, don't have any problems with the bronydom. They can go gaga over their little ponies as much as they like. It's when their more vocal group go into a discussion and start injecting pony memes and some such shit even though they don't belong there that annoys me. And before people go "But other fandoms do the same!", no they don't. I, for one, have lots of friends who enjoy Glee or video games, or some other pop culture media and I don't really get flooded by stupid memes from them, whether in my feeds or threads I visit all across the Internet.

Someone here said that bronies aren't worse than Sonic fans, but I have seriously haven't come across Sonic insanity in my normal Internet browsing, unless I really go out of my way to find them. In fact, I've sometimes wondered why people bring up the Sonic fandom when they talk about such scary shit as I, personally, have not come across one (so if someone can direct me to some discussions about it, I'd appreciate it). I cannot say the same for the MLP brony fandom, however. Everywhere I go, I see them, and most of the time, they shove their fandom into people's faces. And that's what gets annoying.

So you'd be cool if it were grown men charging around getting Powerpuff Girl toys, yeah?

Grown man obsessed with Powerpuff Girl toys?

There was an episode of Powerpuff Girls about that:

Kind of illustrates the difference in the shows right there. This guy is creepy as hell, he sneaks into the girls home and steals family portraits of them and stuff. It was never really an appropriate show for kids.

For the second time: analogies work because two things are similar in some ways and dissimilar in others. Is this really so difficult to grasp? Pointing out innumerable differences won't undermine the analogy because not everything has to be similar for an analogy to work. All an analogy needs to do is be similar in one relevant respect, though Billiechu could perhaps have been more clear in what exactly she thought that similarity was.
And I say again...at a certain point the two cases in the analogy become so different it does no longer stand. let me explain by another analogy I have actually head: Condoning the meat industry is like condoning the Holocaust. See there is one similairity....the mass killing of living beings. Now do you really want to look over all the HUGE differences and call this a good analogy?
So again: Mocking a hobby differs too much from denying fundamental rights to make a good analogy
