New Super Mario Bros. U - Review Thread

The gameinformer delay doesn't make much sense to me. They reviewed Nintendo Land and I'm guessing that has just as much miiverse functionality in it than NSMBU has.

Glad to see that exploration and finding secrets are a big part of the game. I'm also looking forward to sinking my theeth into the new Challenge Mode.

I was actually thinking the same thing. Very strange.

Making sense is boring huh?

Damn, everything i say is boring, even when its not! The curse of having a tag i suppose.

This is a hype thread. Making sense has no place here.

And lol at people falling for the troll hiding behind a Mario avatar.

Try reading ANY of the reviews.

I seen some of the reviews but when you look at the videos. A lot of it looks 'recycled' from the Wii version.

To me, from the vids I've seen. It looks a lot like a HD version of something we've already got. Hence the question.

It's possible they are only allowed to show footage from certain levels. Maybe they have to keep some stuff secret.

3 days... It both seems so close now and so far away... For all the shitty moves Nintendo has made with the Wii U (no gamepad BC, seperate eShops/virtual consoles/etc, no voice chat via the gamepad by itself, etc) it all comes down to the games. Nintendo will ALWAYS have my money as long as they keep making some kick ass mario and zelda games.

(edit) Also current metacritic is 87 for anyone that cares

New Super Mario Bros U review: The best 2D Mario in decades

The Good

Excellent, inventive level design, reminiscent of the 2D Mario classics
Plenty of hidden secrets to keep you busy
Game isn't afraid to ramp up the challenge as it progresses
Sharp, colorful high-definition graphics
Boost mode is surprisingly fun and shows off the Wii U GamePad

The Bad

The flying squirrel suit is kind of lame
Playing with three or four characters on-screen gets crowded

The Ugly

Why is Bowser Jr. still around now that the Koopa Kids have returned?

Verdict: Buy It, but don't necessarily buy a Wii U just for it

In the few reviews I read, they talk about some abstract quality, back or close to past games genius or how it makes advancements to the formula and of course criticizing nsmb2 and even wii in the same time, but all of that without describing anything. So we'll see but I'm under the impression there are some cases of seeing what you want to see, a bit like people discovering things that were already in the wii version and call it amazing.
But well, it could totally have neat ideas throughout the game.

Holy hyperbole. No.
He said ONE OF, not just THE BEST. If it were the latter, yeah, I'd call bullshit with games like Twilight Princess, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario World around. As ONE OF THE BEST though, well, consider the dire state of most launches. This probably is one of the top 10, if not top 5 there. Hopefully ZombiU joins it, with Nintendo Land providing support.

Oh wow

So sensitive when I call it ONE of the best reviewed launch games of all time :lol

I never said a thing about what people will think about it, but so far it seems the press seems to agree that it is a good game. But nooo, that's not possible for some of you - deal with it

The Gamexplain review mentioned it's mostly the small touches that make it better, like the baby yoshi.

Amazing
Is any of these review videos in hd? The gamexplain video is good but the quality is not hd

Did you have it set to 720p? It shows up as hd for me. It could also just be youtube's compression

It's neither. The "best" for me, and I imagine most people, are games that average in the 90s. Not saying this game is bad by any means, but to deem it ONE OF THE HIGHEST REVIEWED LAUNCH GAMES EVER is just needlessly hyperbolic, and factually inaccurate.

Brad at Giant Bomb is also waiting for Miiverse functionality to go live until putting up a review.

They're popup messages that can be turned on and off. They're not part of gameplay. Holding a review for it is dumb. Add an addendum to the review later.

This being on "the bad" is why I don't trust reviews. That's the fucking point of 4 player Mario. Did they even play the Wii version?

Ok ok I'm biting. I'll download this the moment i get my NID up and running. Just hoping it won't disappoint like NSMB2, which isn't bad by any means but it feels like it's still trying too hard to be an older Mario Bros. instead of learning from them and advancing on what you learned.

Making any sort of statement like that less than an hour after an embargo is lifted seems a little crazy. Let it simmer and come back in a couple of weeks with a statement like that. There are a lot of publications that review games.

I love it that I see so many people talking about the return of the Koopa Kids as something new... have they played NSMBW?

Reviewers were like WHOA THE RETURN OF THE KOOPA KIDS in NSMB2 reviews, too. I saw some review from this thread where someone talked about a level "on a centipede" or something like that, clearly in reference to Wiggler. (Which was already a NSMBW level.)

I really do get the feeling that, despite these people saying "these previous NSMB games weren't so hot," they haven't actually PLAYED any of them. Or maybe they played once in multiplayer, then never again. It makes much of their thesis, that this game improves over the previous ones, quite suspect. Almost like "now that it's HD, I'll play it, hey it's good after all!"
