New Super Mario Bros. U - Review Thread

This being on "the bad" is why I don't trust reviews. That's the fucking point of 4 player Mario. Did they even play the Wii version?

It's one of the worst aspects of NSMB Wii imo. Glad that it's being emphasized that single player is the strongest aspect of this new game. I personally have zero interest in sharing screen time with toads.

They're popup messages that can be turned on and off. They're not part of gameplay. Holding a review for it is dumb. Add an addendum to the review later.

Everything I've seen makes me think they are a part of the overall experience and should be part of the review. Even if they aren't integral to the gameplay.

He raises a good point.

Why is Bowser Jr. still around? Koopa kids are so much better.

Because Bowser Jr is Bowser's only real child.

Anth0ny: Nintendo did a really good job convincing all those reviewers that those levels were new and more challenging didn't they?

No way. Best part of the Wii version was multi. I wish they allowed the gamepad to be used in multi though, I guess I need to buy some more Wii motion + controllers. Ugh. The gamepad is only used as a block placer in multi, while the 4 Wii motes control players. Kind of dumb imo

It's a little difficult to take the "but we've seen so much NSMB" attitude threaded through the reviews seriously in an industry where every COD gets 9.0s and is called "the best yet".

But it does look like reviewers are forced to acknowledge that the game is quality on its own merits. No "7.0" shenanigans with review text that's just trying to stir the pot.

As for the killer app business, it's NSMB - it's not a killer app for the audience that will accept only Mario Galaxy, it's a killer app for the mainstream market. We will get a 3D Mario game for Wii U soon enough.

Making any sort of statement like that less than an hour after an embargo is lifted seems a little crazy. Let it simmer and come back in a couple of weeks with a statement like that. There are a lot of publications that review games.

See, this is a good argument unlike Baconsammy's usual gibberish

You're right and I should wait for more professional reviews to surface before dropping a statement like that, but so far it seems scores are positive. I'm just happy that a 2D Mario does well you know

well cannon wise (lol) Jr is the heir of the throne and iirc Miyamo said that he is actually bowser's son unlike the koopalings or something like that

Twilight Princess was a launchgame? I though it was just a GC port.

Soul Calibur technically came 9 months after the original hardware launch (DC launched in Japan in Nov. '98) and Super Mario Bros. is two years older than the Famicom. It's hard to tell if you can categorize those as legitimate launch games.

It's still a game that launched as a Wii title. I think it's recognized more as a Wii title than a GC title by many.

I wonder what system it got the most play on?

Thing to remember too was that it even though TP was a GCN game ported to Wii, it actually came out on Wii before GCN...

The GC version could've probably been released months before the Wii version. But Nintendo waited to release both versions at once.

And my initial post was about launchgames who were designed for ONE platform. And TP is definitely a NGC game.

I'd rather have New Super Mario World. . . or just ANYTHING based in Dinosaur Land.

This is pretty much Super Mario World U, except the enemies don't look like dinosaurs.

• Yoshis
• Baby Yoshis
• The world map
• Multiple exits
• Ghost houses
• The cape, basically, along with all the other power-ups
• Mechanics more akin to Mario World than SMB
• The clowncopter
• The koopalings

...and that's being on a media blackout for the last couple of weeks.

If all you're asking for is a game set in Dinosaur Land, then you've got your priorities wrong.

I get your point... but TP wasn't released on both platforms at once, Wii version was out at launch (November 2006). GCN was out in December. Also, the GCN version wasn't the same, it had additional bug fixes that the Wii version lacked (see "Green potion" as an example)

Uh, in decades? Mario has only been around for two and some.
two decades = decades. If they put it above everything after SMW, then the statement is correct, if not a bit dramatic.

I personally don't think I'd end up preferring it to SMW2,but we'll see.

Technically the first 2d Mario was 3 decades ago.

There are also two ways to refer to decades – as years since, or as chunks of time (the 80s, 90s, etc). The latter makes a little more sense in this context, since the last real attempt at a 2d Mario before the NSMB series was World.

I expect 3 Stars from GB.

BTW: SMW - best Mario of all time.

Also: New Super Mario Bros U review: The best 2D Mario in decades - LOL.

Gibberish is calling you out for stupidly calling the final score for NSMBU: "one of the highest rated launch games of all time" 5 minutes after reviews started being released? Yeah...I'm the one with the issue. But to be fair, this is consistent with your posting history.

I get that it could be accurate, but why not just say it's one of the best 2D Mario games? Just seems silly.

Wow finally a launch game that is getting great review and will probably continue to sell for the whole console's life cycle. The last one was Halo I think.

Sounds like it's actually kind of difficult? Can someone comment on when it gets challenging? Hopefully not at the 11th hour.

The ign review had a good point, if Rayman can look as good as it does in 2d why can't NSMB? I really hate the art style in those games. I realize that it's always been about the game play but the visuals just look phoned in.

I mean SMW looked 10 times better than SMB3 and it took some chances with art, than Yoshi's Island took a huge chance with art, both paid off pretty well.

I wasn't planning on getting the WiiU at launch anyways but NSMBu was the one game I was really interested in.

I can agree with this. One of the main reasons people are snubbing the game saying it's just like NSMBW is because it looks near identical (if HD)... if they had taken a chance with a more striking artstyle I could easily see it getting more love both from reviewers and the community at large.

That said, it doesn't bother me enough that I won't enjoy it just as much.

Yeah I'm hoping they now put the NSMB series, especially its music and art style, out to pasture. Time for something fresh FFS.

I liked how gamexplain put it. "Lifelessness has never looked better than in NSMBU" It's so true

If Nintendo is to be believed, they don't plan on making any more New Super Mario games for Wii U or 3DS (limiting 1 per system). If that's the case, hopefully enough time will pass that when the next system comes around they'll be willing to experiment again.

I'm very excited to see that's all there! But I still thought Dinosaur Land was a cool concept. I liked how there was this overarching prehistoric theme to the world. Even the music featured lots of bongo drums to give it a little bit of a "tribal" feel. It was like Bowser went back in time and created a kingdom where he could rule.

Sorry if I've got my priorities wrong :-p

The graphics are what they are for the New series i guess...

It comes down to preference, to me they always look a little like the game was made with "Mario Maker 2.1" or something albeit they're serviceable and get the job done, but not much more than that!

Though U at least SEEMS to change some of that and incorporate a couple new ideas, locations etc. and it's ... wait for it... HD yeah!!!! ;)
