Be careful with all the Liefeld bashing, Erik Larsen will come in here with his usual, "Schulz drew anatomy weird too according to you guys hurr hurr hurr"

Is he running through one of those old school screen doors or something!?

When in doubt, cross-hatch everything /da90s

Why does he have a horse's hoof for a foot? It's like his leg goes down, then a horse's hoof just decides to protrude from it instead of an actual human foot.

OMG, I', just lookin' at all this 90s artwork. I'm so disgusted by it! Even dudes I used to love like Marc Silvestri look like he lost his goddamn mind. He was so good on the X-men, though :(

Hope Ike Perlmutter somehow gets ousted soonish but it doesn't seem likely.

Those are mojo world kids not the real ones damn

Please don't hurt'em Jerusalem!

So comic gaf, rather than click on the depression thread - let me ask you.

Why do you keep on living?

Family?

Friends?

Do you love your job?

Feeling world weary today.

Had a depressing week leading into this one, and I just keep feeling that there's no hope. I'd like out of my job, but have no viable alternative other than taking a shit gig at retail. I'd like out of this city, but have no savings and even then I just foresee myself feeling trapped in another job I hate, then failing, if I move. Nevermind starting over finding new social groups.

That's thinking short term. Long term there's the end of our solar system, the Sun turning into a red giant and roasting the Earth; so even if you were able to create a legacy for yourself before you croak; the only way it could possibly endure is if we as a species started to colonize other planets.

Blech. . .

Feels bad man. :|

I never read a Spiderman comic before but lots of ppl in here seem to be talking about him...

I kno I gotta pick up Spiderman Blue, and I am gonna jump on that issue 698 to finish the rest of the series,

but other than that are there any suggestions for good Spiderman stories?

not old stuff, I'm sure there are tons of lists out there if I jus do google,

but good recent stuff??

also Wikipedia's issue list is amazing, definitely helps if I hear if a story is good and wanna find where to find it:

Only way this could happen is if somehow two Disney executives visiting Marvel's office needed to take a shit at the same time. So, pretty goddamn unlikely.

Someone should do a laxative based heist.

I really enjoyed Spider-Man Blue. Good character piece and nice art.

Man what a great cover...

Alan Davis is a master. I love that Wolverine mini where he loses control and goes berserk in the middle of a blizzard against a bunch of wendigos...it's an old comic, I don't remember it's name.

Another classic, classic Wolvie story is Bloody Choices where Wolverine crosses paths with Nick Fury and SHIELD, forced to take into protective custody a drug dealer whom Logan knows to be a pedophile.

Wolverine_Bloody_Choices_Vol_1_1.jpg

Look at that cover, John Buscema is another fucking legend...

I miss good Wolverine stories as much as Logan misses his cigars...

Cornell is a guy that deserves attention and can be a good writer but I'm not thrilled about the series statement...we'll see...

I bet a hundred bucks it will be 100 times better than the Cho series.

Eh, I'm not really that excited by my current job anymore, which is why I'm taking steps to relocate to a new city. Just had a great interview last week out in San Francisco, so here's hoping it all works out!

But honestly, dude, I've been where you're at. When you're at that point where you've got nothing in your life to be excited about, it's like you've got a build-up of emotion, which ends up turning into depression because you feel like you've got no outlet for it.

Ultimately, you've got to make a choice to either channel that emotion into something positive (whether it's something personal or professional) or if you're going to let it take over your life. Don't let yourself become apathetic.

You're a good guy, Bandit. And stronger than any bad week, I'd wager.

Anyway, COMICS.

I'm still making my way through Transmetropolitan from when I bought #1-60 in that Comixology sale last week. Also bought some recent issues of Amazing Spider-Man (Ends of the Earth, specifically) to give this week a little more context.

Man, Wolverine has pretty much the worst fashion sense in the Marvel U. Who the hell wears a cowboy hat and skinny jeans in the middle of a snowstorm?

Secretly, I'm just wish I could pull off a bolo as well as he does.

Look at the Brand New Day stuff. Some people will disagree but they're big babies who are still crying about a story that happened half a decade ago. There are some caveats though: ignore everything Bob Gale or Marc Guggenheim wrote - they are terrible. New Ways to Die by Dan Slott (who was tolerable/good during this period) and John Romita Jr is a good starting point because Gale had left completely but Guggenheim did the previous arc. Also ignore One Moment In Time from 638-641. It's a story that literally nobody wanted.

Other than that, the writers (Slott, Mark Waid, Fred Van Lente, Zeb Wells, and Joe Kelly mainly) are all solid to great and the art is almost always fantastic (Steve Wacker is a belligerent asshole online but he has good taste in artists). Shorts arcs + good art + good character moments is all I really need for Spidey and BND has a great batting record.

I will say that SHRED is probably one of the best, if not the best arc in BND.

Some of my absolute favorites & great places to start:

Amazing Spider-Man by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

Marvel Knights Spider-Man by Mark Millar

Peter Parker: Spider-Man by Paul Jenkins. Mostly out of print, but cheap and easy to find.

Yeah, that ruled. It's like Wells read Cry For Justice and was like "fuck that, here's how you REALLY
kill kids
!" Kelly was, by my money, the most consistently good writer over BND but Wells blew him away with that story.

DC has responded to retailers' whining about criticism of their new policy of multiplatform midnight Wed. digital releases, which I mentioned a page or two back.

The gist: beginning next week, comiXology releases (AFAIK, the only platform where publishers have control over specific timing) get pushed back three hours to 3AM EST. Nothing else changes.

I'll miss the midnight releases as an East Coast digital reader, but the silly 2PM comiXology delay is dead, and retailers get nothing they wanted beyond the minor comiXology delay. A pretty clear win for digital.

(I wouldn't have minded had DC responded by allowing retailers to sell new comics on Tuesday, when most of them receive them, but for whatever reason, they didn't.)

Part of me feels bad for the owners of comic shops who feel threatened by the digital takeover.

But more of me loves the convenience of reading comics exclusively on my iPad.

Hopefully these shopkeeps will adapt and learn that there's still a place for comics retail - just not perhaps in issues.

So, I bitch a little too much. It's spanksgiving.

I am thankful for Hellboy and Hellblazer. They both rekindled my love for the medium after AvX destroyed it.

I'm thankful for Sandman always, always, always, being a great read.

I'm thankful that digital distribution is saving a medium I've loved since I was a child.

Probably just smoking blunts with that sweet Ben 10 money. All those guys are rich now and don't really need to do comics to get by. I think Joe Casey is the only one of them that's got anything coming up?

On a somewhat related subject, what the hell is Joe Kelly up to these days? Big fan here but you never hear anything about him these days.

I think he's doing a lot of work for the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon via Man of Action. I'd imagine he'll get back into comics in another year or two.

Personally, while I'm sure the Man of Action team is glad to have him there, I wish he was focusing on more comics. What the fuck happened to Four Eyes, Joe?

I guess I can't blame him. That animation gig is probably orders of magnitude more lucrative.

You ask some pretty deep questions, my man.

I'm personally at a really good place in my life. I'm about a month out from getting married. I'm in great health (I've really gotten into doing marathons and other types of races over the last year or so). I'm 24 so I feel like I'm hitting the best part of my life so far. I keep pushing myself as an artist and I can see progression. I don't have the job I want, but it leaves me with enough energy to pursue my interests as aggressively as I want to. So in all, I don't have much to complain about.

But it's not like I don't know what it feels like to be directionless or hate where I'm going in life or just feeling like I'm very alone.

I'm guessing you know what you want out of life. What's it gonna take to get you there? What's going to make you happy? Is the city you're in essentially a trap? What's to stop you from leaving? How long have you been unhappy with your life as it is? How long has your life been like this?

I would go on, but maybe I'll ramble, annoy and be useless. But if you'd like to talk, feel free to PM me.
