Apparently not.
But then they have you conditioned to accept the shitty up charge.

"Conditioned". Your attitude on this subject is so contrary to the "positive" vibe you always mourn a lack of in these threads.

You always wish people didn't slam books that you like, weren't so negative, and then you claim that anyone who's decided 3.99 Marvel books are worth 3.99 has been brainwashed.

What's more alarming is that I saw the first version of that post and then you edited the second sentence in. Why is that?

And Marvel 3.99 books come with free digital copies, which means I don't have to store them and can get rid of them. Seems even at best, advantage Marvel at worst.

And if you wait a month you get DC books for a dollar less and still don't have to keep shit, or pay through the nose for them initially for a digital code. There is no excuse for 3.99 with no additional content.

Positive attitude doesn't track to price rape.

comixology has been busy for me this week.

Moon Knight 1-12
Courtney Crumrin 12 issues worth
Archer and Armstrong 1-4 first arc
Harbinger 1-5 first arc

Current sales: Valiant large sale, Incredible Hulk 1-7 first Aaron Arc, Blackest Night sale.

I'm looking forward to reading Archer and Armstrong, heard great things. Went with X-0 Manowar in trade though since it was on special earlier. Also skipped buying Journey into Mystery trades on instocktrades.com....maybe i'll get them some other time.

Obsessed with positivity all the damn time is just as bad as reading unending cynicism. There's a lot of shitty things about comic books. $3.99 books are one of them.

3.99 books have been made bearable by including digital codes, but all the reasoning around "why" are negative things.

It takes the pain away from 20 page issues and 3.99 digital prices that don't see a reduction after a month.

Reading through some of this weeks books now. So far - ASM and Rocketeer were great. Iron Man was meh. I really hope Slott doesn't letdown after that start to this arc.

or you could sell the codes. I think selling them helps both parties out.

I really should start doing this. Double shipped 4 dollar books are brutal especially when most single shipped 3 dollar ones I get give a better experience.

I have two digital codes you guys can have. Uncanny Avengers and Hulk. Quote and tell me which one you want.

This is all I picked up at my lcs's black friday sale:

$9 instead of $18. Pretty excited to read it! Leonardo prominent on the cover, as it should be.

I want to give both of them a try. Mind shooting me a pm? If you're offering one I'll take Hulk

Went to primary LCS and snagged full run of Freak Force and the Deadly Duo mini-series. The ancillary Savage Dragon titles. :3

And a the Excalibur mini-series in trade and Vimanarama for 75% off each. :3

Culling my collection starting now. This is going to be unpleasant. :(

You gonna be putting anything up for sale?

You gonna be putting anything up for sale?

Yeah, I just need to cull them first.

My Invisibles and Blade of the Immortal runs will be going up. Invisibles I'll never read again and have no fondness for the art. Blade I have in TPB.

Peter Panzerfaust, the new IDW TF series, Jennifer Blood, honestly I don't think anybody would be too interested in these so I may just offer to ship them to whoever wants to cover the flat rate postage cost. Just to get them out of the house.

Ugh. . .

I know I have some fancy pants first appearances of Gambshit and Deadstool as well which could get some okay money.

Why does Marvel leave so many trades and HC out of print? It's incredibly frustrating and just leads me to seek out the books 2nd hand where they make no money.

I want to give you the MONIES Marvel!!

Jennifer Blood really has become some hot flaming garbage. :-D It's like they had no idea wtf to do with it.

Oh, for fuck sake, as someone starting an omnibus collection, this pisses me off so much. Some volumes are 3 times their cover price at their lowest. And given that I am limited to people who offer international shipping... *sigh*... it's so much money, sometimes. But by the way, here's a site that can help.

I too am limited to places with international shipping and so I get boned on that usually. Nobody has the Young Avengers ultimate collection available new and the second hand prices are ridiculous.

I wish Marvel would decide what the hell they want to do with Carol Danvers' hair. Between all the different variations on the covers of Captain Marvel, the different artists' takes on the interiors of Captain Marvel and in other books, and the fact that it inexplicably seems to change depending on whether or not she's with or sans mask, I think I've seen at least a dozen different hairstyles on her in the last couple months. Most of the time it looks like she just rolled out of bed after a sweaty fuck and at no time during this time has it ever even looked good. Who is responsible for this (lack of) design? I want to implant my booted foot in their nuts.

It's like she's tying it up for her helmet, but how she ties it changes depending on the artist like you said.

Should have just given her a short cut and called it a day.

This might be the wrong place for this, but out of curiosity, is anyone interested in selling unused digital codes? More specifically: Batman, Detective Comics, Justice League and Marvel (Now) books, though I'm interested in seeing what else is on offer as well.

Work has cut back on contracted hours, so I'm looking for 'cheaper' comics...

The marvel trade system is fucked, they do small print runs so they won't have to house it in a warehouse using stores and diamond as storage centers which leads to scarcity for trades. I remember the first volume of daredevil (hc) selling out in the first week in the store I worked at and not being able to get more copies because of the small print run. Marvel has changed their trade policy in the past month and that should fix some of the issues with tracking down trades but we will see not that much faith in it fixing all of the problems.

You're best bet is buying the trades as soon as they come out.

I'm fine with stealing from them, but a Punisher Omnibus would look swell on my shelf.

Yeah - I tried to stick around after Garth Ennis left, but the new writer was just doing a bad Ennis impersonation and then the art just kept getting fucking worse and worse.

Speaking of bad comic art - I looked through issue #9 of Voltron. Holy SHIT! So fucking AWFUL! :(

Are there any good paranormal/real world comics out there beside Hellboy/Hellblazer? I need a fix and I don't know where to find a proper dealer.

Spooks by Larry Hama
The Nocturnals by Dan Brereton
Frankenstein, Alive! Alive! by Bernie Wrightson and Steve Niles
The Marquis by Guy Davis

Old school Swamp Thing, Wein / Wrightson era was a straight up awesome monster comic.

Funny, my buddy who stops by every few months because he's too busy working and raising his damn kids stopped by today. We were talking about prices.

$3.99 comic prices are shit.

Digital vouchers don't mean anything to those of us who don't have media consumption tablets.

It's sad.

Not sure if anybody here is young enough to remember when Marvel and DC used to use their clout to undercut the prices of the competition (Marvel used to cost $1.95 through most of the 90's, 22 pages of manga was $2.95 ((WHAAAAT?! MANGA IS TOO EXPENSIVE TODAY WHINE THE MANGA KIDDIES))).

They used to undercut the competition and set the pricing pace in the market.

Now they just charge whatever the fuck they want because Stockholm Syndrome. The same 50k old men that still read Batman and Wolverine will always read Batman and Wolverine until it's 25k, then soon 0; and all of the money will just be from licensing, TV shows, and movies.

The problem comic face is they need to abandon paper and the direct market, but that's not likely to happen.

Marvel and DC need the Netflix buffet subscription model <$9.99 to read their vast catalogue of books. You can see just how seriously Marvel is taking this by the lack of a fucking iOS/Android app for Marvel Digital Comic Unlimited. They're greedy. It's more profitable to sell overpriced DRM laden files by the issue.

Meanwhile that still leaves comics in the same fucking pinch they were in while in print. Competing for entertainment dollars across modern lifestyles.

Two Marvel comics on your iPad, or that new game for $10 that will last you hours? This ignores the fact that there are a shitload of games for 99¢ that comics simply cannot compete with.

Monthly needs to go digital, and print needs to be restricted to trade paperbacks. It's a model for madness, but considering most of your Image comic creators do not make money on their books until the series takes off and gets the first few trades under the belt, I don't think it's any more risky than how the market exists now.

Comics are competing for the same entertainment dollar that video games, movies, and tv shows compete for and losing. People that see the movies, tv shows, and play the video games don't seek out the fucking comics. THey don't care. It's not their fault. Comics just aren't essential.

I discuss "comics" with someone I work with. He loves the Hulk.

The TV series.

A TV series that came out 35 years ago and which was a fucking atrocious representation of The Hulk is this guy's yardstick for Hulk quality.

At no point in this 35 years has this guy felt the need to read a god damn Hulk comic.

He calls himself an Alan Moore fan.

His favorite Alan Moore works?

Zack Snyder's adaptation of Watchmen.

He has no need to read Watchmen, or y'know - seek out the other fantastic works by his alleged favorite creator; because he's more in love with the idea of Watchmen and the comic book market will grab ankles and clench teeth to satisfy this guy.

Comics are non essential.

It's such a damn shame. Comics are the foundation for multi-billion dollar movies now. Comics are what are drawn up to pitch films, read: storyboard artists. Comics are a better and more legitimate narrative medium than video games, but we have a general of ADD afflicted trophy unlocking sub-millennials that think video games can compete with film and comics in terms of narrative.

I love comics, but America could give a shit. Comics are the slaves brought over from Africa to help tame the land and kickstart American industrialization. Comics helped establish more profitable entertainment industries at their own expense, and now we get to languish in our own funnybook ghetto.

Yay! COMICS! :(

I need to go finish reading Psycho and doing laundry.

I wish there was a way to go back to dirt cheap comics on the spinner racks at the corner bodega.

I used to love going to the 7-11 with a bunch of change and hitting up the "Hey Kids! COMICS!" racks. Then stomping fools on the SF2 arcade machine. Now both of those are things of the past. :(

Also I want to add to those saying a digital voucher doesn't mean shit to me as someone who doesn't own a tablet and has no interest in getting one. I'd rather have a cheaper book with the option to add digital for an extra $1 or something.

That would be good for the industry too, because y'know - comics available everywhere.

Relegating comics to out of the way specialty shops isn't doing the hobby any favors.

This is why the comics companies should focus ALL of their marketing efforts on digital as it can eventually be the great equalizer. Tab prices will fall over time, and the same account can currently be used on any PC, with the books instantly transferable to the tab once purchased.

Digital = always open, always "local" comics.

Print is long past life support as far as getting new buyers. And your suggestion to use it solely for trades is exactly how I use it now.

Well TTOB now I'm sad :(

It's so true though, these characters are more popular than ever but comic sales stay low :/

You know what makes me even more sad?

Black Adam with a hoodie.

Fuck you Geoff Johns. >:|

After seeing Wreck It Ralph I was thinking - "Who did Pixar make this movie for?"

Ostensibly it's a kids movie, but if it were a kids movie it would have been about video game consoles, and not arcades. No kid knows what an arcade is.

It was pure fanservice for arrested development adults, and pretty much the closest I'll get to a biopic. :P

I still buy my indie books because I have to support them, otherwise they'll go out of business. Even Kickstarter could change that model though.

Kickstarter could be a good thing for the indie creators, so long as they manage expectations (Lea Hernandez, Tony Harris, and a few other industry veterans have had multiple failed crowd sourced projects with ridiculous goals) and deliver quality projects.

Until digital can give me a chromium cover, it is not an option to me.

No post in this thread will top this.

Everybody go home, Rafa is king of this thread now.

The problem with digital is two fold; pricing (comics should be $0.99 and below) and ease of use (Need to be DRM free PDFs). Until that happens? Not worth it. Why in God's name would I pay $2-3.99 for a DRM restricted version of my comic I can't sell or trade???

You can still play on the SF2 machines if you know where to look. I can't promise you'll be stomping on anything though.

Rian Hughes is writing and drawing a special project for DC:

Yay, exciting!

Finished Osama Tezuka's Barbara yesterday, I really appreciate the ability to even see his works outside of Japan. When I first learned of him years ago I never expected to see this, MW, Apollo's Song among others.

And yet again I'd like to mention that 2000AD has been on a roll the past few weeks, DJ Food says a little about it over here : http://www.djfood.org/djfood/2000ad-prog-1811/comment-page-1

Bedlam #1: It starts off feeling like Nemesis, hyper violent, and then gets a little weird, and then gets extremely preachy and boring until almost the end with that press conference seemingly never ending. Not sure how i feel overall.

Quick rundown of the series I've read last week:
Deadpool #2:
Well at least DP's book is funny again, and I'm liking Preston; she knows she's in deep shit but she won't let it stop her from seeing her mission through.

Daredevil #20:
The plot thickens, and Coyote's a cool looking villain.
Bullseye's involved in this isn't he...

Indestructable Hulk #1:
Good first issue, glad to see Banner isn't crazy anymore, although I like the way Pak wrote Banner during his run the best.

TF: Robots in disguise #11:
Shieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, I honestly just WANT to see Bee find out all the shit Prowl's been doing without his knowledge, but that last page THAT LAST PAGE!

JL 14The misadventures of Billy Batson #14:
lol # Bats spying on Supes and Diana, jealous much?
...and the Billy Batson story was rather good, I need that collected in a TPB already.

Wonder Woman #14:
I like how Wondy handled that situation, and am looking forward to
Orion's main part in the upcoming story...unless this is Az setting up for Fourth World/New Gods story XoX
