omg @hotlinemiami is $5 for the next [4 days] buy it you fools

No, I really did mean that the non-soundtrack elements of the game make up something decent but not great.

It's a cool idea marred by some seriously ugly visuals, a super-casual retry structure, and a lack of variety (enemy types and their behavior sets). I'd like to see this done by another developer.

Ugly visuals?
I can't agree.

Now I've seen it all.

I like the look of everything in the menus and stage transitions, and ultimately I'm fine with the nasty aestheic the game is shooting for, but the characters are completely hideous in both top down and close up form, and the environments are barely sensical.

I feel like a lot of the GOTY talk is coming from the on the nose story and the style.

For me it's about the entire package. Every element feeds into every other and it all coalesces into something I think is genuinely magnificent.

The combat was surprising, ultra-hectic, and I always find myself getting into a zen-like trance when I play it. It's as notable to me as anything else about the game. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and its parts are also awesome.

a super-casual retry structure

The whole point of the retry button is to keep the adrenaline pumping and momentum going, and it's excellent at it, with the game instantly loading. And how does it make it any easier when it resets the floor that you have to clear?

If the game play was average instead of great then this would have ended up like Retro City Rampage; talked about for like two weeks and then forgotten.
Retro City Rampage was built entirely on nostalgia for the kind of game that Hotline Miami wants you to feel bad about, nostalgia alone doesn't make style.

Don't get me wrong, the action puzzling is great fun, but it's not GOTY level for me.

HEY FUCK YOU BUDDY. :P I meant to say the music gets annoying but ya, the biggest thing is it makes me nauseous. Gameplay seems like it would be fun but those swaying colors gives me that feeling like the motion sickness I get with some games, I barely made it through the 20 minute video the other guy posted.
Sounds like gaf over hype. I'll pass. Thanks.

Is this some masocore stuff? It seems like it is.

Is controller support for this thing good?

ibrvN5fOxbaqfa.JPG

Have to buy another 360 pad, lol. The damn rubber ripped playing this game..So yeah, is good, lol.

How is this game with a game pad? I'll be playing this on the couch and I do have a good keyboard and mouse setup for anything that requires precision so a controller might be easier if it works well enough.

Edit: looks like my question was already answered. Guess I'll give this a shot tonight.

Blink and drink water.

Or just listen to the soundtrack while watching the trippy part of 2001: A space Odyssey on a bit of weed.

;P

I almost would have rather had the game play in a completely different style. The silly ultraviolent world it takes place in makes me roll my eyes about once every 2 minutes.

Even though the enemies are not so much defined by what they are but what they're carrying and your approach to them is dependent on the level.

What they are carrying: one of the fairly similar guns, a knife, or a generic melee weapon.

How they are lured: pretty much the same regardless. And then dogs and big guys.

But that's one issue.

This is what I said in the thread for this game:

People are calling this game a GOTY contender for a reason. This isn't a game that people will say something like, "most technically impressive game so far," so you know that when people call this a GOTY contender they are talking about it in game play terms. Because the game play in this is excellent.

It's a hugely exciting overhead shooter with addictive as fuck scoring that enourages fast risky gameplay and mechanics that are a blast to play around with (mowing down a load of dudes with an assault rifle only to run out of bullets as one more guy rushes round the corner, knocking him out cold by throwing the empty rifle at him, and in turn smoothly picking up his golf club from the floor to cave in the head of another dude emerging to see what is going on in one continous motion).

It's a little rough and buggy but it's practically being given away, has a superb soundtrack and interesting overall aesthetic, provides its own OMG deep critique of violence in videogames and a midly interesting Lynchian narrative to boot.
This 2 posts really sold the game to me. But I'm willing to wait for a 75% sale, as I'm not in a hurry to play it.

Really great game, but I could understand why the PlayStation generation don't "get" it. Plays like a late 80s/early 90s Amiga game. Even without the soundtrack and the weirdness it'd be a pretty unique action/puzzle game.

Yes. Except that it's actually intuitive and appealing from a mechanical standpoint. I told someone the other day, "It's like an NES game that I'd actually choose to play."

It's also sickly beautiful and, yes, "that soundtrack."

I think that's a bit unfair, there's many reason to not 'get' this game. The over the top violence with a deeper meaning has gone all the way from interesting to cheesy at this point, the level design encourages some people to just smash through sequences rather than attempting the deeper strategy, and the is very little variety to the encounters.

This game is not without flaws, but it's fun enough for 5 dollars.

how is the game played with a keyboard and ,i suppose, mouse?

Perfectly fine, that's how I played it.

Also, it is working fine on Windows 8 right?
Actually, I've read there are some compability issues with Windows 8 and the version of Gamemaker Cactus used to program the game. When there are too many sounds played at the same time (which usually happens in levels with lots of glass windows being shattered), the game might crash.

Not sure if one of the updates the game got since release fixed that.

Keys to move, mouse to lock-on, aim, shoot, drop and throw.

Preferred it to playing with the controller, which I almost never do.

Not into drugs but ya, the soundtrack is easily worth $5. Tbh the money would have been better spent on the soundtrack alone. Looks fun but makes me super nauseous.

I'm surprised nobody thinks this game is like Loaded / Re-Loaded / Smash TV though. Top down, kill everything. The combo system and melee maybe. Inspiration is on point though.

Bought it, worth it for the soundtrack alone. Played the first 3 Chapters, had to stop because I'm having a pretty bad migraine and this game really doesn't help with that... Seems pretty awesome though, I usually hate trial and error based games but getting that perfect run after failing a bunch of times is just so much fun.

Good game but I hate how the controls feel so off. Its like you can only move in four directions. Not sure if it was by design or what, but come on, its 2012.

Hotline Miami was already fantastic at $10, so this is a must-buy at $5.

It's intense and hypnotic. Things happen quickly and violently. You play alongside the awesome soundtrack and you plot your rampage before you punch and throw and smash and stab and shoot and then everything is dead and the floor is full of blood. You die a lot but retry instantly so it's okay. The color palette and oddly oriented overhead camera make you feel a little uneasy but that's how you know you're taking the real strong stuff.

The plot tries to be a little too smart for its own good, but it complements the action well, and doesn't get in the way of you killing people. Mechanically, it's really sound, and it feels good when you succeed. It's almost a fast-paced mix of Metal Gear stealth and Smash TV mayhem, seesawing between careful planning and an orgy of violence. I'm glad I bought it.

I see where Tain's coming from when he says it's okay, because if you want to get deep into the scoring system the game kinda breaks down, and there's only so much variety in the existing levels once you start replaying them. But I'm not an arcade type so that stuff matters less to me. I still found reasons to go back in and play it more, because it was fun.
