Assassins Creed 3 PC performance thread

Im going to have to wait for a patch from UBI or some new drivers as ive spent the last 6+ hours trying all manner of different drivers with various states of overclock and underclock including running the game in safemode with SLI disabled and enabled with Uplay online /offline and nothing is stopping the crashing.

Just tried some other games to see if it really is anything on my end and no they all run smooth and solid even seen a bump in fps in sleeping dogs didnt need it but its there. Shame because what little I did get to play was really impressive I loved just walking around boston and getting my arse handed to me in the pub games lol.

Good luck to all who are still trying, I will keep my eye on this thread.

Is there any way to get rid of the giant "HOLD B TO SKIP" prompt that is in the corner of the screen during all cutscenes? Turning the HUD off doesn't do it.

I seriously do not understand why developers do little things like that, do they not want us to see the cutscenes?

yup no idea. This really really bugs me as well.

Anyone else facing crazy texture flickering on the snow while in the Frontier? Using the latest NVIDIA beta drivers BTW. No SLI either.

Here's my config:

Motherboard: Intel DP67BG Extreme Desktop series
Processor: Intel Core i7 - 2600K @3.40 GHZ
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590

Sethos has the same problem, definitely a SLI issue.

I hope that Ubisoft Kiev is already working on a patch but you never know.

Someone posted this over on the UBI forums, is this for real? Are the AMD processors doing this bad?

The flickering is an Nvidia issue, actually. I asked in that Nvidia article two pages back and got this response;

Andrew Burnes - Admin

We are aware of it, yes, and are actively investigating, though with the Thanksgiving holiday week in full swing our response times are somewhat delayed.

Someone posted this I just noticed, might try it out. However it sounds like he just slapped on some SLI bit which means SLI won't work properly and the flickering disappears.

Try editing the DX1_ SLI flag to 0x020000F5 (Call of Duty: Black Ops II) using NVIDIA Inspector v1.9.6.8; it fixed the flickering completely on my GTX 680 SLI setup.

Have been playing this for a couple of days, at 1080p, all settings on max but with AA off. Silky smooth virtually all of the time No crashes yet. Am on sequence 5.

Rig:
2500k @ 4.5Ghz
8Gb Corsair Vengence
1.5Gb GTX 580 Superclocked
Latest Nvidia beta drivers (the ones recommended for AC3)

Great game, I am in awe at the Frontier map, so massive and so lush, amazing to explore!

Will have to try that out myself, got to the snow on my SLI system :(

This is happening 99% because of game optimization, not because of CPU strenght. There is nothing wrong with AMD processors.

I would beg to differ.
AMD CPU cores are way slower than Intel CPU cores per a clock.

But even so, the game should run better than that, very much so when it is so multi threaded (one of AMD's few strengths) .

On the other hand even a sandy bridge with stock clocks fails to keep a solid 60 frame rate and drops it almost to low 40s. Noway is that right.

TEMPORARY FIX

Guys, I contacted Ubi's support and they recommended that I launched the game in safe mode, without Uplay's overlay and it got better! 60 fps in Boston! Could you try the same and see what happens?

Interesting. Just launched the game and it's maintaining a solid 60 everywhere ( SLI though ) but my GPUs and CPU isn't going crazy - They are surprisingly quiet now.

EDIT: The hell man, that might also have fixed the flicker.

EDIT2: Okay flicker isn't fixed.

I should have known safe mode would be behind it, the last few AC games I couldn't even open the game without having to boot in safe mode.

When you guys say safe mode. Are you guys talking about booting into windows safe mode, or is it something you apply for just the application?

Surprise, shitty trash garbage drm client that noone likes also ruins performance!

In Uplay's window, click on the arrow next to "PLAY" for ACIII and the option is there.

I posted the same thing on Ubi's forums and here is the strange thing: It didn't work for some. In fact, for one person, it decreased performance!

But it's worth the shot!

Just tried the safe mode trick. Didn't seem to improve or decrease performance. But i just got my very first crash 10 minutes after enabling it. I've managed to play about 5-6 hours before without any crashes.

To be honest, i'm managing fine anyway. Coming from the PS3 version, even with these drops to 45-50, it still feels like a brand new game.

Cheers for pointing it out though guys, it was worth a try and I hope it works for most of you.

Holy shit dude. I am now able to select High AA without any issues! Frame rate is definitely smoother now as well. Not constant 60fps yet- but I'll toy around with the settings. Good spot dude

Hi all,

Does anybody know if there is any way to push the foliage draw distance out a bit further on PC? I am already at maxed settings, and find myself wanting to see further into the distance before the grass starts disappearing...

Any ideas?

Can't expect that in 2560x1600, that's over twice the pixels it has to push compared to the standard 1080

I forgot that, I was thinking 1080p, yeah 60fps all settings max at 2560x1600 is shall we say desirable with the fastest gpu on the planet but not always guaranteed. 1080p on the other hand I wouldn't settle for anything less than 60.

In any case good news.

Game is running great so far and I've only had one crash in 5 hours or so.

Using a 670 TOP, 4,5 OC 2500K, 8 gigs 1600mhz ddr3.

Rarely getting any fps drops and playing at max settings with very high AA.

Drops aren't as noticeable either since I'm playing on a 120hz screen. I'm guessing this game is forcing V-sync?

Well, a slight correction though - 2560x1440, god damn lacking 16:10 support :P

But I have to say, the sheer atmosphere in this game is immense. It's almost RDR levels at times, the snow and the sounds it all creates this sweet ambient feel. May not be the graphical marvel or have the CrAzY CrySiS lighting but atmosphere for me is the most important part of a game.

I agree. Ideally there is a lot that could have been done with the PC version graphics wise but it manages to look very good and much, much better than the PS360 versions.

To be honest I would not have minded some god rays here and here or object-based motion blur.

Perhaps I'm underestimating how much time do those features take to implement, yes I must be.

Strangely, as good as multiplats on PC can look I eagerly await next-gen to truly arrive.
Hurry up Microsoft.

For those that didn't work, I reommend going to Ubisoft's support and report. They're sending the reports to developers, so maybe we can have a patch sooner.

It's also a temporary fix, so we can't rely on that anytime. Even more because most people won't know about safe mode.

This scene with SLI enabled would easily make my DPS drop to 40-45 but with Safe Mode I'm at 55-58 on a single card. Definitely helped. And it shoots up to 60 when you move an inch because that is the most taxing scene I could find.

So the fix certainly helped me.

( Downsampled from 2560x1600 / 1440 ) Actually looks horrid downsampled, mashes a lot of details together creating a smudged look. The full screen is so crisp and beautiful.

Great to hear, I'm not buying it anytime soon but when I do I would like to have performance like that, maybe they'll patch whatever the ghost is that's causing that *cough*drm*cough*

In any case I'm happy to hear people are continuously improving their performance, it's sad when a pc-port is so broken that even months after release there's neither a sign of a path or fix in sight, I'm looking at you prototype 2. Hey that rhymed.

I'm glad the performance issues are being hammered out, but would someone mind telling them to fix the money staying on the screen with the HUD off? That shit will annoy more than anything else when I buy the game. :P

Sure man, didn't tweak too much, increased the vibrance a bit over default and enabled curves.

( Don't know where else to upload it without registering, any suggestions? )

I think all you need to share is the settings/text from the SweetFX_settings.txt so I guess just paste it here or in a pm or something :), easier than uploading it somewhere that's for sure.

Not pasting all that crap, might as well just download the setting file itself. Takes but a second.
