Assassins Creed 3 PC performance thread

So my save has disappeared. Pretty sure I didn't delete it, but it's not there when I load the game up. Is there a back up in the steam folder? Any way to restore this?

So I got killed in Boston, too. Massive framerate dip. I've also found that turning environment detail down to high is the only thing that helps a bit. Sadly I still drop below 20fps in a couple of places. Very annoying.

The beta drivers may have given me an extra frame or two, but nothing much. Here's praying there's a patch or something on its way, because the game looks amazing and I'm enjoying it so far.

I am running the game 2560 x 1600 and it is running smooth as silk on everything on high. Holy crap this game looks way better than I expected.

The game looks phenomenal, and i mean it.. the only (graphical) thing that turns me off is the sun glare and the lack of godrays.
You'd think the one game with a shitload of fog everywhere would be justified to actually push them godrays, but no. :\

Indeed the lack of god rays is regrettable on PC.

in that far cry 3 nvidia article they said they are aware of the issues with ac3 and bf3 and are working to fix them in time for the next whql release

fps dips and snow flickering are making it
unplayable right now, just gonna play far cry until ubi put out a patch too

Often I don't agree when people go on about how buggy a game is, but I've run in to several with AC3 already. Screen going blurry, freezing, buttons not initiating the correct action, map markers disappearing.

Combined with the Boston FPS problem, it makes for a messy experience. A shame, because there looks to be a pretty great game underneath.

Environmental Detail is CPU capped, you need to have a Core i7 running at 4.70 GHz + to even think about getting 60 FPS if you set it to very high in Boston.

Good to hear but aren't Ubisoft Kiev supposed to be working on a patch ?

I mean, can Nvidia entirely fix those issues with their next WHQL driver ?

i think the snow flickering could be fixed with a new driver, but the the fps drops are not limited to nvidia's cards. not to mention the general bugs.

took them a good while to put out future soldier patches, could be the same scenario here. i really cant play it like this so im just messing around soaking in the atmosphere until i get far cry 3

If put environmental quality to high, I will lose the awesome deformable snow footprints/trails? Or will it just tone them down a bit?

Yeah, the SLI snow flickering is on Nvidia's shoulders. Everything else is on Ubisoft's.
As it has been pointed out already the issues nvidia has acknowledged so far are the SLI glitches etc.
You guys are right, I had other issues in mind. Namely stuttering in Boston for instance, I doubt Nvidia can do much about this but they can feel free to prove me wrong.
The 310.54 drivers gave many people a sizeable performance boost after all.

In my case I'm still running the 306.97 and the game performs really well, but definitely drops at 40 when I'm free-roaming in Boston. This aside, 60fps all the way.
I guess this is one of those games (along with the latest Need for Speed) where a I7 3770 really shines.

FS is now playable, I suppose they can abandon it and start focusing on AC3.

You'll still get them and they'll still look perfectly fine. But yeah, some detail will be lost.

Someone can correct me, if i'm wrong. Which i probably am. But i think it just no longer uses tessellation for them.

found this from a (GULP) .... youtube comment

TEMPORARY FIX that removes the snow flicker in SLI mode:
In Nvidia Control Panel, change "SLI rendering mode" to "Force alternate frame rendering 2".

Now the Pro/Con of using this....
Pro: No more snow flickering with SLI enabled!
Con: The fps is the same as default "SLI rendering mode" for every location except in the areas that have the deformable snow. The fps performance then starts to act as if your in single-GPU mode.

I've spent the last hour testing..extensively.
Enjoy :)

How does the HD5770 fare?

Terribly. My system is old (I'm still using a C2D E8400 3Ghz) but I'm at times I'm getting about a third of the frame rate I got in the previous games, with it dipping as low as 12-15 FPS. You should fare better if you have a faster processor, but I wouldn't recommend buying it if you're close to the minimum requirements.

so is there any way to share a save file or something? I'm screwed here...either I or the game deleted my save and I was ten hours into the game. I really don't want to go back. Does steam save the files anywhere?

No point in doing it just for this one game though because it still runs like ass on intel CPUs. And the next generation is only a few months away.

I would think that EVGA Precision or other similar monitoring utility would do the trick like MSI Afterburner, just a preference.

For this game I have just decided to limit FPS to 30 and crank everything up as high as it will go. That, at least for me, is better than a janky 60fps experience with random loading stutters when running through the city and rooftop running.

Getting mostly in the 20s everything maxed at 720p

Gtx 670

Time to ditch AMD

20s with a GTX670 at 720p?

Jesus that processor is killing you.
I can flirt with the 60s and ive got a GTX570 and play at 1600x900 right now.

I tried pushing 2560x1440 but that completely killed my baby 570.....i need a Golden GTX670 asap

On my i5 750 not OCed, runs between 45 and 60 (it's not super smooth, but it's more than fine).
GPU is a 580 and i play with everything maxed out at 1080p (can't activate TXAA, but still have a good 4xMSAA+FXAA on very high).

What the hell are you on about?

i7 2600k, GTX 560ti, 16GB RAM, and I'm getting 50-60fps. My flatmate has an identical setup with a GTX 670 and he's got a rock-solid 60 with Vsync.

What I am on about is that your CPU at stock clocks performs about as well as my i5 750 running at 3.8 GHz. And on either CPU the game will dip into 30 FPS range because the game engine is poorly optimized. If you have environmental detail set to Very High.

AC3 just disappeared from my Uplay game library. Every time I launch it, it asks for a new product key. I already used the product key I got from steam to register the first time. If this results in me having to replay the first 5 hours of this game I'm not going to be happy.

Are you launching Uplay separately? Because you need to launch AC3 though Steam and use that Uplay client, clicking the AC3 .exes directly seems to install a different client on the side and using that 'other' Uplay client doesn't have the registered Steam games. I tried launching an .exe directly and a Uplay icon appeared on my desktop despite already being installed, which apparently was installed in another location and was a different entity of Uplay.

Shame shit happens with FC3.

It's a complete clusterfuck.

Its probably some weird licensing issue between Steam and Uplay. That steam bought games can't be launched directly through a standalone uplay launcher.

Anyone getting bad pop in with this game? The lod pop in seems even worse than previous games.

Pop in partly depends on environmental detail. It's extremely awful at normal, and only slightly better on high settings.

I think each new game I play has more and more obvious LOD problems. Battlefield 3 was bad, but bearable. This game and Far Cry 3 are way too obvious to me, it should really be a slider or option that we could tweak.

so is there any more news concerning the performance issues here.

Last I heard ubisoft said they were "looking into the FPS" drops.

Don't get the wrong the game is totally playable for me, it just sucks to be 60+ FPS at one point and then lose 30FPS in parts of Boston :(

Not sure about AC3 but other Ubi Steam games do not get added to your UPlay library. You have to launch them via Steam and that's the only way they'll appear.

I was initially rocking 60fps (or close to 60) in the beginning sections at 1920x1080 near max settings, but reaching the city area killed my framerate. I was already on a 2500k @ 4.5.

I have a 6970 though so maybe nvidia cards fare better?

Yeah dude, no shit.

Thing is, I'm sure the CPU is perfectly capable of feeding my 670 fast enough to get acceptable performance, but it seems lately that games are better optimised on Intel.

I was exaggerating a little about the frame rate. The 20s were in the opera house, but otherwise it was usually around 40-50fps.

Have performance issues with this game. 1650x1050 res, everything on max except AA which is set on high instead of very high, since very high glitches the visuals, everything becomes blocky weird looking, kind of like missingno.

The other problem is massive fps drops when near, or even looking in the direction of any town. it can be 60 fps when out in nowhere, but if the camera ever swings in the direction of boston, even if its not directly visible, it drops to 30 instantly.
