jump to conclusion GAF almost has me convinced there is a problem here, almost
Sadly there seems been almost a constant stream of bad press/user complaints since launch in the US and the knock-on effect from that, in the UK, is a dearth of folk cancelling any pre-order that they had.
.
Its like people from 2006 with a venegance. Never knew there were so many that really want Nintendo out of the industry. The console is not even a week old. Let me repeat. Not even a week oldjump to conclusion GAF almost has me convinced there is a problem here, almost
Can u show us some links? Evidence? PRs?Sadly there seems been almost a constant stream of bad press/user complaints since launch in the US and the knock-on effect from that, in the UK, is a dearth of folk cancelling any pre-order that they had.
You would have expected some sort of PR spin to keep the console in a good light pre/post launch.
That is the worrying thing. Its like people from 2006 with a venegance. Never knew there were so many that really want Nintendo out of the industry. The console is not even a week old. Let me repeat. Not even a week old

I don't think many people want Nintendo out of the industry . . . anyone that does is just some silly partisan fanboy that should be ignored.
I just bought a second deluxe unit without much hassle. Seems like some of the stores in the greater New Haven area in CT received new stock in the past 36 hours. Went to a Target that had basic units in stock and to a Gamestop that had both models in stock aplenty.
Before you guys get all in arms crazy about me purchasing multiple units, neither of my deluxes are going to be resold. One is Xmas gift for my sister and the other is mine.
Can u show us some links? Evidence? PRs?
Do you have any data to back that up?
Which came out in mid February. When the interview was done in January, there was already a good amount of evidence of a problem.
Other than word of mouth from family/friends, work colleagues and of course GAF, no nothing i can link you to. But a dearth of negitave opinions is indeed what i've been hearing.
I've had my Wii U pre-ordered since they were available in September. But from then onwards my own hype has been eroded to the point that i'm scrapping for excuses to keep my order and not to cancel and pick up a bunch cheap games on other systems.
Which is what I constantly harp about. It was a dud. But the revisionists who want to rewrite history and deny it was ebay gold at launch need to be shouted down. Cause it took a couple weeks to reveal it was a sinking ship. Wii U hasn't shown it's gonna be a bust on that level. But it also hasn't shown it can even match PS3's performance yet. PS3 at least had launch. The next couple weeks will reveal what Wii U can do.
If that 1.5 million shipment is true I wonder if Nintendo is trying to aggressively grow the userbase in North America since the west is a major battleground for console sales and Microsoft and Sony are pretty competitive there as well.It is too early to tell with the Wii-U, but based on the rumored shipment number of 1.5 million by the end of the year in NA, I don't think what I've seen is indicative of a problem.
That said, I'm certainly not putting any of this in stone and I think we'll have a decent amount of clarity by mid January, if not by mid December.
That's also not to say I don't think Nintendo has a real long term problem. I greatly feel that they do.
Outside of 3DS, I can't recall anyone else hyping preorder numbers. For sales figures? Certainly. But what of pre-order figures building up to launch? None whatsoever.
I bought two deluxe units in the past 36 hours at Gamestops (Branford & North Haven, CT) without having pre-ordered.but I thought Gamestop had a billion pre-orders to fulfil?
Um... About that...But if there was a Super Mario game, I would have picked it up.

Hehe, my very first Gif reply on GAF![]()
But your right, I used dearth incorrectly. But remove it from the post and my point still stands. I'm a deflated Nintendo fan and i'm looking for reasons to KEEP my pre-order. Its just not right!!
Nintendo have done an awful job with getting the message across to the casual audience, and if the Wii U does end up struggling after launch (which I think it will) I can't see how they can't at the very least take part of the blame. The more I look at the box art on both sets, the more I feel Nintendo have dropped the ball - it really does look like an add-on to the original Wii with the way the GamePad is emphasized over the actual console.
I'm a Nintendo fan. Logic rarely applies.
Yeah I was on a GameStop wait list and they've been calling me to come pick mine up but I told them I found one elsewhere and to give it to the next person on the list. At least here in the Bay Area deluxe units seem to be in ready supply. My GS had a stack of both kinds, they asked me if I wanted to buy one. (I'm guessing because I'm a regular?)
They were also calling people on the 'list' but it sounded like not everybody wanted to come in to get one. Maybe they found one somewhere else?
Some of that has to be due to some confusion. I can't tell you how many times I've overheard someone saying that the Wii U is a tablet controller for the Wii. It should've been called a Wii 2.Saw some just sitting in the case @ Toys R Us today. Either Nintendo shipped far more Wii U's than Wii's or no one gives a shit about it (comparatively). Hard to believe that a day after Black Friday you can still find one in a store with a modest amount of effort. What a change from 6 years ago.

Yeah, my point was more stories like this kept popping up: http://uk.gamespot.com/news/more-than-250000-on-gamestop-wii-u-waitlist-6398860
That makes it sound like they had sold out of day one AND had a further 250,000 on a wait list.
So are we to assume all of those people have got one? People have changed their minds? Gamestop ignoring the wait list?

Edit: Thanks for consolidating the threads. I didn't mean to clutter.
I gotta say I'm a little worried about the videogame biz in general but maybe I should just be worried about Nintendo in particular. I dropped by Fry's the other day to pick up some cheap Blu-Rays on black Friday. I walked by the videogame isle and there sat 5 WiiU bundles on the shelf.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't all the xbox 360, the PS3, and Wii sold out for months after their respective releases? Here is the first new console out of the gate for this generation . . . and it doesn't sell out? Why not?
Previous NPD November launches for comparison:
Xbox (2001) 720,000
Gamecube (2001) 660,000
Nintendo DS (2004) 370,000
Xbox 360 (2005) 326,000
PlayStation 3 (2006) 197,000
Wii (2006) 476,000
Sure, but it launched in October. Here's the non-November launches:
PlayStation 2 (Oct 2000) 390,000
Game Boy Advance (Jun 2001) 880,000
PSP (Mar 2005) 620,000
Nintendo 3DS (Mar 2011) 390,000
PS Vita (Feb 2012) 220,000
Everywhere is still taking orders for day one, brah. There's no money to be made. There will be less for sale next week when Nintendo has the EU to supply.
I've had my confirmation email from sainsburys so £279 for my premium. If I get £500 I'll be happy!
Cash on collection, ebay can suck it!

If the thing was lighting up the sales charts and Nintendo just had a great supply line I feel like we would have had some type of announcement from them. If we don't hear anything this week we won't even need NPDs
Just based on the highly unscientific, anecdotal info we're hearing, I'm leaning toward the initial launch being a flop. I really hope not, Nintendo is really the only console maker trying anything different and I'd rather see that rewarded. I guess we'll know soon enough.
In any case Sony has shown that you can have a disastrous launch and still recover.
