Not every comic shop is a nerd dungeon. My LCS is very clean and nice.

If The Walking Dead can boost sales from the show then the big two should be able to do the same thing. DC should try advertising Green Arrow on the CW once Lemire's run starts.

Is there a reason why Marvel and DC haven't been able to capitalize on the success of their films and increase the sales of their comics? Have they even tried?

I remember when TDK came out DC decided "Batman RIP" was a good way to push away possible fans.

But what about all the teens and adults who would read them? How do you get them into comic stores? I feel like that shouldn't be an issue anymore because being a "nerd" isn't a thing of derision now.

Naw being a "nerd" is interesting and sexy. Being a "Nerd" is still gross. Only one of these will buy the comics.

They've been doing the exact opposite. Plastering the show banner all over the comics.

Doesn't really matter how clean the shop is, if people aren't going to see the inside because of the hurdle it represents. More exposure in more mainstream outlets could however lure people to these stores.

Thor: "I was fine with the killer robots, concentration camps, mutant experimentation, apartheid, genocide, terrorism and wars. But throwing rocks on people? Booing!? This has gone too far!"

This series is so goddamn contrived

Dat four dollar talent.

At this point I feel like dropping UA before the second issue even comes out -_-

Luckily i pre-ordered through issue 4....i wasn't sold on #1 after reading it and that snippet from #2 (?) makes me raise my eyebrows like Thor only wishes he could.

Caught up on a couple more trades...

Saucer Country 1 is... interesting. The dialogue is sophisticated, the art generally attractive, and the story intriguing, but it doesn't feel like we've managed to really get anywhere in the first volume. It's not throwing out mystery after mystery or anything like that, and the exploration of hypnotic suggestion was pretty interesting, but I guess I'm just not quite sure what to make of it thus far.

Mind The Gap 1 was a vast improvement on the first issue, IMO. I guess the whole slightly-supernatural-thriller thing its pulling isn't particularly original, but the pacing is good and I'm definitely interested in all the characters, particularly after the final chapter of this volume. Plus it's about theatre people! I hadn't realised that somehow after reading the first issue way back when. Weird.

The preview kinda confirms it for me. There is still no reason for this book.

There is a rather obvious narrative point to it, but rather than running a quick and frenetic mini-arc of an Uncanny Avengers team saving some lives and doing some good plus establishing the new team and representing Human/Mutant relations, Remender has instead launched straight into VILLAINOUS SECRET SOCIETY WORF'S ERYBODY UP IN HERE again. Countdown to Wolverine being injected with debilitating cancer/magical disease: 3 issues.

His Cap book felt fresh though, as did his Venom run. I think its just Team books he has one speed setting for.

Definitely to both. Hulk was great set up and Cap was non-stop awesome.

Sounds good, thanks.

Marvel is pulling me into several issues I didn't think I'd try. I doubt I'll read Uncanny Avengers for the long haul, but I picked up Deadpool, Fantastic Four, All-New X-Men, Hawkeye, and now these two. $$$$$$.

am i the only person with ttob on ignore? works wonders, guys.

UA is going to be way worse than A/NA... woof.

Thor looks like a complete no.

What do you guys think on Hulk and Captain America? Worth picking up the first issues?

Captain America was awesome, and will be Remender's best current work.

As far as selling comics for cash goes, I had a college professor who bought his house in full through selling the comics he has collected over time.

Anyone else read Buffy/Angel & Faith, I'm a huge fan of both and I'm thinking of picking up Willow tomorrow. I want to know if it's up to par with the two aforementioned series.

Walking Dead is boosting sales without them having to advertise the comics. One major benefit Walking Dead has is that it's a single series that one easily can pick up. Go to store, pick up book that are all easily numbered.

Person sees a super hero film, goes to store and is confronted by one character with multiple series, huge tie in story arcs with other books, large numbers in the hundreds posted on books. They keep trying to get readers in with jumping points with all new issue 1's and nonsense but a person can't figure out anything from that when theres so many series and volume 1's. Even if a person goes online to research this shit, often it is hard to find a good starting point for a newbie. Many trades of stories are not even numbered and just have the title of the story arc, so anyone who wants to follow a series has to really research their purchase. And even if they draw in some readers, the nature of comic books is going to turn away many once they start buying.

Here's where I suggest what comic readers don't want to hear.

Stop rebooting, rehashing, and otherwise regurgitating decades old characters if it's such a barrier to entry.

I see neophyte manga fans heralding the diversity of manga, and then they go on to cite Dragonball, Naruto, and Bleach as example of "superb" work.

The trick there is those are all basically the same shonen power grind story; the story is just being told with a different set of characters.

This is also what comic companies don't want to hear. Wolverine, Spidermang, Batmang, and Supermang bring in tons of dough. New characters and stories are too much of an unknown to put in significant resources. This is especially true with Marvel/DC being part of large public corporations that are expected to make more and more money each quarter/year.

The hell. Did he have Action #1 or something?

I have no clue what the specifics were. We got into a conversation about comics when I complimented him on his tie. It was a blue tie with the eye of aggomotto on it. His office turned out to be filled with all sorts of cool dr. strange stuff. A collection of Hard Cover Dr. Strange on his shelf for example.

Am I the only one not ignoring anyone?

I want Marvel to start making Disney comics. They can charge me five dollars. Disney Action Heroes with art y Skottie Young.

I feel like superhero comics will always be a niche, regardless of how other superhero media does, so my suggestion is yeah, fuck it, stop trying to get new readers, they will either fall into it not knowing what the fuck is going on but enjoying it anyway, then struggle later like we did or not.

The way I see the comics industry getting bigger is every other genre growing; maybe horror, maybe romance comics, maybe autobiographical artsy fartsy graphic novels, whatever. This particular genre is what it is and if this particular genre is the entire industry, then the entire industry will keep being what it is.

i agree - and i think it's happening now. image is doing great with all the creator owned non cape stuff.

I ignored that Manos guy before he was banned because he was fucking insane.

yeah, that guy was a total loon

If there was actually a numbered main series of superhero volumes marketed prominently as the only true plotline now and forever, and comic books were in more stores, I'm sure they'd see a significant increase in sales. It just doesn't gel with the way things are done now. Though I agree, having more genres is important.

Don't do anything dumb. I appreciate you here.

Won't be doing anything dumb.

Just honoring the long count calendar.

I've been around this site in it's various incarnations for a decade now. I can't say I've outgrown the site, but the site has changed and many of the sub-communities and people I've enjoyed interacting with the site have moved on as well.

There's an age gap and income gap that I've observed around here, and my tolerance for both is greatly diminished.

In my personal life I know few persons like this, and the rest are like myself are trying to figure out how to stay on our own two feet in an increasingly harsh world. How to live the lives we want to live without a foundation to build on.

I'm not getting any younger and living isn't getting any easier.

Recently seeing a boisterous blowhard poster on the gaming side who has been here for a few years reveal he wasn't aware Drinky Crow was a joke character sums it all up for me.

Serious business, yo!

I just need to lay low until my final comic OT. Then I'm scuttling the account and moving on.

Yeah I've been here since the dawn of time too, so I can relate to what you're saying.

But I'd selfishly rather you'd stay. It won't be the same without ya. Who will love Kamandi with me?

Started Peter Panzerfaust trade and my initial reason for not buying it monthly prevailed: I don't really care about the subject of the book and nothing happened in the first issue to win me over. Reminds me of my reading experience with Saucer Country, it's a decent book that i'm indifferent to and stopped reading.

But I'd selfishly rather you'd stay. It won't be the same without ya. Who will love Kamandi with me?

Seconded.

Also, I'll do my best regarding Kamandi. Totally psyched to get my hands on that second volume.

Do you or anyone else want my Captain America #1 code for free? I just read the comic and had a blast.

Well maybe Marvel and DC need to consolidate their titles. Does Marvel really need to have Wolverine, Cyclops, and the Avengers in 25 titles? Focus on characters and don't have a revolving door of talent working on a publication.

Holy crap!

Dinosaurs.

With rockets?!
:O

Clearly the handiwork of a madman!

Daw, thanks for the vote of confidence guys.

The other benefit is I'll be forced to spend my free time focusing on trying to draw more gooder and hopefully profit from that, and maintain peace of mind.

Just found out about volume two of Kamandi this weekend from the pal I referenced earlier. I'l need to snag that at some point as well. $28.25 on Amazon!

Speaking of dinosaurs, in case anybody isn't reading it there is going to be a full scale war between Lucifer and his army of hell beasts vs. the Questing Queen and her army of motherfucking dinosaurs for control of Avalon coming up in Demon Knights. You guys should probably just read it tho.

I would miss you too TTOB, even if you're a cranky grandpa ;P. I haven't been in this thread very long but you know your shit and have given me awesome suggestions on books to read.
