SemiA: Intel to move to stop selling processors separately, only proc+mobo combos

There's no way Intel can just get rid of socketed CPUs in the laptop space. The backlash from the major manufacturers would be immense.

And their alternative is? ARM? AMD?? Transmeta? I doubt Intel would get rid of socketed CPUs, but I wouldn't be shocked if that were the case.

But there aren't many alternatives.

Yeah, I mean what console manufacturer would look at AMD's CPU specs and base a next-gen system around it? I mean an A10? Who would use that, right? Right??? Gamers would be ticked? :)

Just because Sony picks the A10 for the PS4 doesn't mean it's a good gaming processor. I would prefer they chose one of AMD's better cpu's in the piledriver lineup at least.

Not sure i'm liking the idea of buying a cpu tied to a specific mobo because what mobo manufacturer will link a cheap, but capable mobo with an unlocked processor? I dont want all the bells and whistles on my mobo if i can save some $. Mobo manufacturers might only link the unlocked i5's i7's with their higher end mobos and we'd have no choice but to buy it if we wanted that cpu

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater."

As far as rumors go this one doesn't make very much sense.

For it to be true it posits a future where Intel has no reasonable competition in the desktop space. If that future comes to pass Intel can charge what they want for their processors, they won't have to take on all the negatives(technology and business-wise)of getting rid of the socketed CPU.

It probably wont happen. Even if it did I have been building PCs for 15+ years and I cant recall a single time that I didn't upgrade both the CPU and the MB at the same time. However I am not an "Enthusiast" so to speak so they would be probably a bit more hurt by this news. I don't see why they would do this however because the enthusiast has given them way more money over the years than they deserve. It either becomes the breaking point for some people or they get an extra $200-300 out of people who are making incremental upgrades. The high end enthusiast wont bat an eye at this. Plus you can probably flip the CPU/MB combo to pay for your new one like a lot of people do with expensive GPUs. So no this wont kill anything. It will just change the landscape a bit.

In my experience, I've never seen much of an increase in performance that didn't come with a new socket type, thus rendering my current motherboard obsolete. Assuming they sell different variations of the motherboard with varying levels of CPU power, it won't really affect me.

Still sort of weird, though.

Charlie is the Michael Pachter of PC. Semiaccurate's rumor is as good as Kotaku's, aka bullshit. GK104 $299 anyone?

With the rumours of Apple eventually moving to all ARM down the line as well, this news will certainly make for a radically different PC market in a few years time. Seems like that old Oracle dudes dream of thin terminals and software as a service from years back will eventually come to pass. We'll have "apps" IAP out the wazoo & nice walled garden stores.

It'll be the Internet after that way down the line. These are the dark times my friends.

A dark and grim future for PC enthusiasts :( And I fear there is no other way with how things are going now.

Why is AMD doing bad? Are people not building PC's anymore? Will there come a time where you can no longer buy a separate mobo, separate CPU, separate RAM etc. and combine them based on what you want?

I don't see what the problem is

MOBO manufactures have to partner with intel to sell Intel mobo's. Intel mobo choices to be limited. As well as probably closed.

AMD lets users install their own CPU's with custom heatsinks and what not, very customizable, variety of options and easy to over clock.

AMD will be old school, intel will be new school.

I dont see this happening ever. Intel will sell some that will have to be soldered onto their kachiggas, for mobile and tablet. But what would they gain by removing the higher end pc market? Its surely profitable for them, and the motherboard manufacturers. I think its clear that they are tailoring cpus more and more for the devices or os that will use them to compete with ARM, but that doesnt mean they are leaving their bread and butter behind.

It would be shooting off your leg to save your... other leg.

Ha. If true, it would be the greatest ironic turn of events for gaming: Just as 2014 is ending, and all those great crowd-funded projects hit their stride and are released, the PC enthusiast market dies because of manufacturer's greed.
The games everyone wanted with the hardware nobody needs.

There are many reasons that AMD is doing bad. Almost all of them are AMD's own fault. At the rate they are going, AMD will probably not exist as an independent company within the next 5 years, probably sooner.

With AMD barely keeping afloat? It'd kill in for me, anyway.
AMD would take over the build it yourself market if intel stopped. It would be the best thing that ever happens for them. I can't really see intel doing this. They would have to completely retool how the FAB works to make this combo in mass. It's not cheap, at all. Like a few billion per fab, and they would have to knock them all out at once and then wait for them to switch over. That takes 6 months to a year because after you build the sucker, you have to clean it. I worked in a FAB in Arizona, you can't have more then a few microns of dirt a whole building and that takes months to get too. So yeah, this seems far fetched to say the least.

What are the reasons? I don't know much about how these companies operate I'm interested. I've always bought AMD CPU's they offer great performance and OC capabilities at a much cheaper price than Intel CPU's. I'd be worried if they went out of business then who will replace them?

With AMD bowing out and Intel finding awesome new ways to capitalize on us plebians- PC gaming just became even more "Master RAce".

Cool a rumor based on pure speculation.
PC gaming dying? No
I look forward to more pc gaming and have enjoyed so since c64.

Things change but liars continue to lie. Gaming journalism & journalism in general :-s :|

Two words.

Charlie Demerjian

I came to post this. I was not disappointed.

There are many reasons that AMD is doing bad. Almost all of them are AMD's own fault. At the rate they are going, AMD will probably not exist as an independent company within the next 5 years, probably sooner.

And that would be a damn shame. Competition breeds innovation, though AMD is certainly out of the resources it needs to do so. The fabless operation was the beginning of the end, really. ARM may compete with Intel in the lower power segments, but with AMD gone there would be no one seriously competing in the desktop sector. As it stands now, AMD CPUs aren't as good but provide better bang for the buck. (Edit: and I say that as someone who's running Sandy/Ivy in most of my newest boxes, including the gaming ones)

I mean... an intel motherboard though? no thanks guys.

If you're not planning on doing "enthusiast" things and want a solid motherboard that works, there's nothing wrong with the Intel boards. I install Intel boards in most of my servers.

Intel used their market dominance to destroy AMD's revenue stream when AMD had the best processors around. If AMD would have been able to profit and gain market share when they were the best, things would be totally different today. As it is, the bad guys won.

All I care about is will I be able to buy Disney Star Wars games and Disney Pixar movies in the Microsoft Store that comes pre-installed on my new Intel-Box.

I think focus on low power will make for much more interesting products. Instead of 800 watts power supplies and gigantic cases with head size radiators in them, we could get a powerful (though not extreme) gaming machine even smaller than a X51 from Alienware.

Custom options will probably start to look like those from Shuttle. Small form factor with already MBX+CPU installed.

In my experience, I've never seen much of an increase in performance that didn't come with a new socket type, thus rendering my current motherboard obsolete. Assuming they sell different variations of the motherboard with varying levels of CPU power, it won't really affect me.

Still sort of weird, though.

Unless you're either shopping for the cheapest or most expensive options it will, because they will definitely tie mobo features to specific CPU tiers to keep the number of SKUs low. For example, i5 and i3 buyers would probably be stuck with two RAM slots.

Anyway, this sounds too unlikely because it would piss off their hardware partners a lot.

Isn't NVIDIA working on Project Denver and entering the race with their ARM architecture based CPUs. I thought that even Microsoft develop windows 8 to run off the ARM architecture also?

If this rumor is true, maybe Intel is trying to snuff out their chances of maybe taking a profit cut from another competitor entering the market.

Well guys, it's been amazing. I don't know where to go from here, but I'll be going out with a bang as I build one last cutting-edge gaming rig around Haswell early next year since according to this article it will be their last socketed CPU before 14nm and full-board integration with it. Regardless of the BS level contained here, it will remain my plan either way.

I love PCs and PC gaming, I just hope it evolves and isn't completely dessimated by this. I really wonder how companies like EVGA are going to make it in such an environment. They now have about half as much potential product to sell as before.
