Vita PSN Game And Service Thread

Hmmm, was going to pop out today and either get Rayman or LBP, what are the chances of either of those being included? Slim to none I guess.

Hello guys,

I'm kind of considering a Vita at the moment and have a fee questions I'd like to get answers on. I've asked some of these in AusGAF, so apologies if anyone there finds me repeating them here. On matters of opinion I'm just after a couple more impressions. On matters of fact, I'm after definitve answers.

I'll keep it to 10 questions, so hopefully this will help me decide if its a path I want to go down.

1. PSV games have online passes - do all of them have them? Or just some? Does it depend on publisher?

2. How is the battery life when compared to a 3DS/3DSXL or DSi. (They are my points of reference, just interested in ballpark values). For the Vita, I would be looking at a Wifi model only, not 3G.

3. Are there any known issues with the screen quality? (Scratching, dead/stuck pixels, responsiveness of the touchscreen)

4. Any known build quality issues with the hardware? Does it feel chunky and sturdy like a PSP-1000 or is it a bit wobbly like a PSP-2000?

5. I'm thinking of going for a 32GB memory card. How would this fare for downloads? I would anticipate downloading a few PS1 games, a few PSN games and maybe getting PSN+ for downloads of big name games I wouldn't typically buy. What are people filling up 16GB/8GB cards with?

6. (Australia) currently only has black systems. Are white ones coming to PAL/EU territories?
Or if not, how is the black finish on the system? Matte or gloss? Is it a fingerprint magnet?

7. Cross-system buying seems good. Is it widespread, and is there a link to compatible titles? I've had a look on the au playstation site but its not very comprehensive. I assume it works similar to the Portal 2 on PS3 registration business, yes?

8. Do PSP games on the store run fine on PSV? I'm thinking along the lines of Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe as I love that game, and Tactics Ogre remake from PSP.

9. Who are the smaller/niche developers that are regular PSV developers to watch out for? I'm used to familiarity with Nintendo handheld dev teams, but less so the ones who have a solid reputation on PSV.

10. Does anyone wish to offer impressions of games like Shinobido 2, Touch my Katamari and New Little Kings Story?

Many thanks in advance to anyone able to help. Rather than take up this thread with responses, I'd also welcome answers via PM.

Cheers :)

1. PSV games have online passes - do all of them have them? Or just some? Does it depend on publisher?

Only some of them.

2. How is the battery life when compared to a 3DS/3DSXL or DSi. (They are my points of reference, just interested in ballpark values). For the Vita, I would be looking at a Wifi model only, not 3G.

Around 3 to 5 hours on PSV games. 4 to 8 on psp games.

3. Are there any known issues with the screen quality? (Scratching, dead/stuck pixels, responsiveness of the touchscreen)

Only OLED blotches.

4. Any known build quality issues with the hardware? Does it feel chunky and sturdy like a PSP-1000 or is it a bit wobbly like a PSP-2000?

Chunky.

5. I'm thinking of going for a 32GB memory card. How would this fare for downloads? I would anticipate downloading a few PS1 games, a few PSN games and maybe getting PSN+ for downloads of big name games I wouldn't typically buy. What are people filling up 16GB/8GB cards with?

I filled my 32 gb whitin months. It's ok if you don't plan to go full digital.

6. (Australia) currently only has black systems. Are white ones coming to PAL/EU territories?
Or if not, how is the black finish on the system? Matte or gloss? Is it a fingerprint magnet?

The black system is fine. It is a fingerprint magnet but you won't notice it while playing.

7. Cross-system buying seems good. Is it widespread, and is there a link to compatible titles? I've had a look on the au playstation site but its not very comprehensive. I assume it works similar to the Portal 2 on PS3 registration business, yes?

It's not widespread. Not similar to P2. Most games is buy from the PSN Store, get PS3 version for free. Some games are cross DLC too.

8. Do PSP games on the store run fine on PSV? I'm thinking along the lines of Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe as I love that game, and Tactics Ogre remake from PSP.

They run fine but not all of them are available.

9. Who are the smaller/niche developers that are regular PSV developers to watch out for? I'm used to familiarity with Nintendo handheld dev teams, but less so the ones who have a solid reputation on PSV.

Acquire and lot of the PSM/Minis devs.

10. Does anyone wish to offer impressions of games like Shinobido 2, Touch my Katamari and New Little Kings Story?

I love them all but I like quirky games despite having technical faults and being overpriced

In for a treat SmokyDave.

I never got round to picking up Vanquish! From the sounds of things I think I am too.

Fuck too many games lol, where was everything 2 months ago Sony!

1. PSV games have online passes - do all of them have them? Or just some? Does it depend on publisher?

Depending on publisher - iirc all sony ones have them.

2. How is the battery life when compared to a 3DS/3DSXL or DSi. (They are my points of reference, just interested in ballpark values). For the Vita, I would be looking at a Wifi model only, not 3G.

About same as psp3000. Slightly ahead of 3DS, and only minimally discharges when console is in sleep mode. Much lower than old DSes

3. Are there any known issues with the screen quality? (Scratching, dead/stuck pixels, responsiveness of the touchscreen)

Only the green ghosts which you can see on completly dark backgroud in dark room.

4. Any known build quality issues with the hardware? Does it feel chunky and sturdy like a PSP-1000 or is it a bit wobbly like a PSP-2000?

Feels much sturdier than my 3000.

5. I'm thinking of going for a 32GB memory card. How would this fare for downloads? I would anticipate downloading a few PS1 games, a few PSN games and maybe getting PSN+ for downloads of big name games I wouldn't typically buy. What are people filling up 16GB/8GB cards with?

Vita retail games are like 1-3 GB
Vita downloadables are few hundreds megabytes
PSP games are 200-900 MB
PS1 games i think biggest was FFVII @ 1,3 GB

6. (Australia) currently only has black systems. Are white ones coming to PAL/EU territories?
Or if not, how is the black finish on the system? Matte or gloss? Is it a fingerprint magnet?

Gloss, fingering isn't so bad but you will have finger prints on screen like in any touchscreen device.

7. Cross-system buying seems good. Is it widespread, and is there a link to compatible titles? I've had a look on the au playstation site but its not very comprehensive. I assume it works similar to the Portal 2 on PS3 registration business, yes?

Not very widespread - it will be mostly on Sony games

8. Do PSP games on the store run fine on PSV? I'm thinking along the lines of Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe as I love that game, and Tactics Ogre remake from PSP.

Most of them, especially in PAL store. TO i have myself not sure about Pixeljunk.

9. Who are the smaller/niche developers that are regular PSV developers to watch out for? I'm used to familiarity with Nintendo handheld dev teams, but less so the ones who have a solid reputation on PSV.

Falcom, NIS, Marvelous

10. Does anyone wish to offer impressions of games like Shinobido 2, Touch my Katamari and New Little Kings Story?

Sorry haven't played any of them.

Ok so I have some wifi acess and aside from having to grab the update. I might be able to grab a download. Plan on just buying some PS+ but is there any games on the PSN that are small in size to download?

That arent from the PSmobile side

I'm contemplating ridge racer or Motorstorm RC for vita. How are the framerates for these? I remember hearing some issues on both?

Buy Motorstorm. They're different games but Motorstorm is unique and great fun. Ridge Racer has framerate issue and lacks of content. Motorstorm had some framerate minimal problems but it has been fixed

Framerate on RR is great.

M:RC framerate does drop occasionally but doesn't affect gameplay. -very good game (just takes a while to get used to camera due to it being a top(ish) view RC game).

Ridge Racer is good WITH THE DLC (I'd still buy NFS:MW instead of it (unless RR is on a discount?) - the drifting is very fun in the open world).

Even with the DLC - the single player is lacking* (mp is very good - except for not being able to save downloaded ghosts for offline play) - the dlc maps don't retroactively work with some of the single player stuff (which is already minimal - no real campaign - has these race challenges which are tough..but short lived). SP AI is too easy imo. And once you rank up can't select slower speeds.

*It's not due to a lack of maps/cars (9 + reverse with the dlc iirc) - has other niggles that I touched upon.

Lol Sintoid, seems we have the opposite opinion regarding framerate ;)

I've experienced no frame rate issues with Ridge Racer. There was a day 1 patch that apparently fixed some frame rate issues, but it's solid at 30fps.

I'm not a fan of MS:RC, so I would suggest Ridge Racer. It doesn't have a lot of content, but the core RR gameplay is all there. It comes with the Gold pass so you get a few extra tracks. Online is fun too, I can usually find a few games online at any moment.

Yes you are.

Maybe I should give it another go too and try to get the last missing trophy before platinum.

I really enjoyed motorstorm rc. It's more heavily geared towards time trial/score chasing than flat out racing ( although there are race events in there). For the price it's great value for money IMO. I still actually need to pick up the DLC events for this.

Haven't played ridge racer, but am thinking this would be a good candidate for ps plus soon, so im going to wait til then.

1. It depends on the developers. You will find quite a bit of online games with an online pass though. WipEout 2048 and Everybody's Golf comes to mind.

2. The battery life is better than the 3DS and XL. It holds up a bit longer and it hardly uses energy when it's on standby.

3. I haven't experienced any screen issues though I've read that OLED technology does have faults when it comes to keeping its brightness after a few years of use and playing in a dark room.

4. The quality of the hardware feels great, sturdy would be the right word. You won't find gaming handhelds of that quality for a while. Though I do feel the shoulder buttons are not as good as the rest of the hardware, they feel more cheap and not as responsive as I would hope.

5. If you're only planning on DLing a few files, then you're going make good use of the 32gb memory card for a long time. I think it's the bare minimum to have if you're planning on investing in exclusive PSN games even. I'm getting mine filled quickly because I'm doing it fully digital. I have about 7 gb left. 11 games DL retail, 7 PSN games, 5 free PSN games, 2 mobile games, and some apps are currently on it.

6. Not sure, isn't the white bundle with Assassin's Creed also for EU?

7. It's not that widespread and the way they work depends on each game. Some games require you to buy any version from the store to get the other version, some games require you to get the PS3 version specifically to get the vita version too. I haven't seen any comprehensive list but here are some games that come to mind:

Sound Shapes
Hustle Kings
A-Men
When Vikings Attack
Playstation All Stars
Ratched and Clank
Sly 4

8. They run fine and great on some games from what I've read.

9. Gunho seems to be aiming more for the Vita, Marvelous have made tons of games for the Vita, Sega has been more supportive than other bigger companies and their games are usually of very good quality technically, Aquire has made some games early but I'm not sure what they're aiming for now. A lot of indie developers seem to like making games as well, wether it's for mobile or PSN.

10. Of all those games, I played Shinobido 2. If you like Tenchu games and don't mind PS2 quality graphics/animation/AI, then you're going to love this game.

I'm really tempted to buy a PSN+ subscription which I basically consider as a game rental service...anyone knows a place where I can buy one cheap for an European account ?

1) Not all games have online passes. Some just don't have online, some do and just don't need a pass. It's a little hit and miss.

2) Typically I get around 5 hours of gameplay and I use headphones. If you use the speaker then you'll obviously get less. From launch week I seem to remember the Vita winning most battery test against the 3DS, but then the XL wasn't out at the time.

3) The only known issues are really the blotches you might see when the screen is displaying a black image which is a "feature" of OLED screens. You don't see them during any other time though so it's not really anything to worry about. Also there are some who have concerns over the display life because it is OLED.

4) It's solid.

5) For reference, Uncharted is about 3gb, Wipeout without DLC is 1.5, one of the fighters is 3gb. So if you have a few games on there you can see how it can fill up fast. Also many Demos are the full game so that if you buy you only need a 100kb unlock file. That plus PSP and PS1 games, music, videos etc means that the more you have the easier life is.

6) No idea on white coming to the EU, I want one myself. The front is gloss and yes a fingerprint magnet.

7) It IS good, but not as widespread as I'd like. No idea if there is a list out there though wiki probably has something. If the titles are digital only (PSN games) then you just buy once and get both licences to download however you like. If it's a disk based PS3 game then you put the disk in a jump through a few hoops and a digital copy is assigned to your PSN account for the Vita. You could at that point sell the PS3 copy if you wished.

8) Yes to both. And they both look great. The only real issue with any PSP games is that not all are supported as yet, this seems more a database that Sony needs to update though.

9) Not great with Dev names sorry.

10) Not played either.

Yes you are.

Maybe I should give it another go too and try to get the last missing trophy before platinum.

>_< I mistakenly picked up Bayonetta (PS3) instead of Vanquish thinking I was getting the really popular game. It does look amazing.

I expect so, yeah!

I loved the first one, not really sure how the second passed me by.

I'm willing to bet that I'll own all 3 PS+ Vita games. Oh well!

I quite liked the first one but the second one just nailed everything!

I'm contemplating ridge racer or Motorstorm RC for vita. How are the framerates for these? I remember hearing some issues on both?

Not played RR but played the fuck out of Motorstorm RC.

Loved the game and the pricetag. It had several patches which fixed a lot of the framerate issues it had at launch. Great game and I want more DLC for it.

Also liked the coloured arrows which denote your best time (white), your next best friends time (red I think) and the world fastest time (green I think). Handy for improving lines and seeing where you are going wrong.

I only backup to my PC. and even that I now do rarely. With PS+ the only thing I need to backup are my saves as I'm fortunate enough that my internet speed is fast enough to not need tow worry about backing entire games up.

It is really nice being able to do it wirelessly to the PC now though.

I did a bit of a prune out the other day. I now have just 1 person on my list that I actually know.

The rest are all Vitabros.

SirTodge if anyone wants me.

Just set up content manager n my Mac mini and backing up my games wirelessly. Very slow but I don't care

I'm having to back up the full games even though I really only care about the saves. I'd like Sony to separate them out like they do with PSP saves. They are obviously internally separate to allow PS+ to upload them, so why not just let us backup to computer too?

So how much time do I have to get this month's PS+ goodies before they're pulled for the next update?

It'll be another 3 weeks yet before the rotation happens. And you only need to go through the checkout to claim them, you don;t need to download them if you don't want them yet.

Are you not of the PS+ master race?

If you only care about the save just save them to the cloud. The only reason to backup the entire file to your PC/MAC/PS3 is if downloading the game again at some point is going to take ages due to your connection.

Wait a minute

Gaf now explain me this thing. When I use cloud save of PSPlus on Vita what I upload to the cloud is only the savefile? Not the patches and install data?

Hello guys,
I'm kind of considering a Vita at the moment and have a fee questions
....
Cheers :)

3-Just to clarify. The black spots on the screen aren't noticable when you play. Only in dark screens (i.e. uncharted loading screen). But, as validated by lots of vita users, they disappear with time.

5-Right now 32GB is perfect if you are DL intensive, but insufficient if you will go all digital. If you don't like having to delete games in order to make space for newer ones, 16 GB is a minimum. If you have Plus, i think 16 GB should be the minimum, and if you can afford 32, better.

7-PSASBR, PSOne games, Minis, Sound Shapes, When Viking Attacks, Zen Pinball 2, Pinball Arcade, Top Darts, Retro City Rampage, Star Drone, Motorstorm RC, Hustle Kings, Wipeout HD/Fury. The PSM stuff is cross buy with your android devices (not the ps3).

8-Pixel Junk Monsters plays perfectly and looks fine on my Vita. I'm talking about EU PSN here.

Oh yeah, the thread seems to be more active with new faces. I'd like to welcome every one of you!

And Jet Set Radio on the Vita rocks. It looks sooooooo gooooood, and the controls run very well too. I don't even have crashes like others have experienced (so far), only once early in the game.

^ Ditto to both! Welcome all. And JSR is excellent on Vita yep.

Wait a minute

Gaf now explain me this thing. When I use cloud save of PSPlus on Vita what I upload to the cloud is only the savefile? Not the patches and install data?

Not patches I'm sure but some games like (LBP and iirc Modnation Road Trip for example) have the dlc inside the save file..

@mrklaw yep :/ I do the cancel-early + copy and paste trick to get the save file locally when backing up (it transfers before the main game file - copy and paste it somewhere else then cancel transfer then move it back).

They really should let you backup saves locally and separately. Hopefully it's coming otherwise that's pretty dickish off Sony. Cloud saving should be a bonus not basically a necessity.

The OS seems to crash mostly when using other small aps at the same time. I've started using the browser again and I've crashed a lot.

I'm on a buying frenzy, just bought another game, PSABR.

Anywho, does anyone else lose sight of their player in battle royale? Half the time playing is trying to figure where I'm at!

Few quirks. When you're searching for a match and you hit the PS button it disconnects you from the network, so no multitasking.

Thanks heaps for the answers so far guys, much appreciated. I think that's got most of my concerns answered/qualified, so at least I know better what is fact and fiction from my own understanding. Might see if I can get hands on time with one this week.
:)

I had this problem during the beta.
Now it never happens to me. Just make sure to use your name colour as a reference more than your character. When the peripheral view looks for i.e. "red P1 label" it is much easier to keep track of everything, not only your character, but how charged are everyone's PA bars, enemies position, etc...
