Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Watch 25 and 26 before EoE. It's all incredibly weird and obfuscated in those two episodes, and EoE provides clarity.

Since we are already talking about evangelion. Does anyone know if the original series and movies are going to be released on blu ray. Has there been any news about that.

Rewatching the TV series now for the 6th or 7th time... I don't remember.

Evangelion is probably one of my favorite series of all time now that I think about it. I'm really enjoying REBUILD as well even though it's taking forever between releases.

So hype for 3.0...

Anyway, the TV series, End of Eva, 1.11 and 2.22 are all worthwhile imo. I wish they'd put the TV series out on blu-ray but I haven't heard if or when that would even happen.

Sadly I don't think the result would look great on bluray, it's probably fine as it is on dvd. A reedition of the movie would be good though. I had to buy the japanese dvd to finally have it in decent quality.

Eva wasn't made digitally, so it should look very good on blu-ray

Late to the party in this thread, but watch the series first, Death and Rebirth (if you'd like), and End of Evangelion.

I just finished watching 1.11 yesterday, I'll be watching 2.22 tonight, then the series and End of Evangelion afterwards.

I like the Rebuild series, despite 1.0 basically having it gloss over the first few episodes of the series. 2.0 is where the Rebuild series becomes separate from simply being a remake (there are theories suggesting something more to it than that). 3.0 and FINAL should be completely different.

I didn't really like the final two episodes of the series, but I appreciate them in the grand scheme of things, after watching End of Evangelion.

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing a TV series based on the alternate reality from the final episode.

Perv Shinji is pretty funny:

Then you have Gendo being totally cool:

Pretty bold prediction for 201516.

Bookmarking thread to remind me to watch the whole series after finals.

Had so much interest in watching it since middle school and never bothered to watch the tv series completely.

It's time to fix that after finals
and find the buddy with the DVD collection

Dub terrible by any chance? If its decent I'm going dub+subs since I can't stand watching anything without subtitles.

Eva dub is ridiculously terrible. Shinji's va is really really poor.

Something I realized when I was watching End of Evangelion a few months ago is that NGE has always been one of the only anime shows where I feel like I can only watch it dubbed. Anything else sounds weird to me. I guess it's because that's how I started watching the series so now the English voices are pretty much stuck with me.

I think it's a fine dub though, all things considered, but that's just my thoughts.

I need to get my Platinum collection back from one of my buddies. He's had them for years. :|

I watched Eva in Japanese first, so I always liked that cast; anata baka still plays in my mind to this day.

The English cast is a bit goofy sounding, but overall it's not bad. I actually enjoy certain characters, like Ritsuko, because her voice is very cynical.

It sucks that the English cast is different for some roles in the Rebuild movies, because I miss Ritsuko's tone. Also, the new Rei doesn't sound as morose or as comatose. :'(

But Shinji's a really horrible, terrible person, so it fits.

Cruel Angel's Thesis; the best anime opening song ever? Gives me the creeps every time.

Fly Me to the Moon isn't a bad ending song either!

I like the piano version of Cruel Angel's Thesis at the end of the series.

Fly Me to the Moon sounds nice, but the vocals feel a bit overdone.

Eva is one of those cases where I prefer whatever I heard first. For the tv series, I watched the dub first, so I prefer it dubbed; for EoE and Rebuild, I saw those subbed first, so I prefer them subbed.

I've seen the whole show a couple of times. I know it's got some backlash in some circles, and I've heard most of the big criticisms (and agree with many of them.)

I still like the show a lot anyway. Kinda want to watch it again sometime. My girlfriend's pretty familiar with it but I don't think she's ever seen more than a couple of episodes.

My personal opinion is that so far, the Rebuild of Evangelion movies are an improvement over the original series. However I'm sure there are lots of people out there who don't agree, plus the Rebuild series isn't finished yet.

If you want to watch something that has (some kind of) an ending then you should probably start with the original TV series. Mind you, if you don't already own a set or two on DVD then I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that legally as it was licensed by the now-defunct ADV Films. Maybe try ebay?

I agree follow this man.

Funimation owns all of ADV's old stuff. I'm certain they have a reasonably priced set available now.

Rebuild is an average movie by itself, people just like it because it is a big fan service to the original TV series. Rebuild took away the character development for most of the adult casts, and focus all the resources to robot fighting and full body plug suit. You really need to experience the original to appreciate the characters.

I wouldn't say Rebuild is better, but I do think it's a fun series so far. OG Eva is raw as fuck and Rebuild clearly improves on the visual clarity (and some of the animation, although there's too much CG for my taste) and the soundtrack. Still, the roughness of the original series gives us some really awesome and unique visuals (the heavy black shadows in episode 16, anyone?) as well as more shocking character development moments. The latter is probably to be expected, since the (so far) six hours of movies have to condense a lot of separate episodes worth into a more focused narrative. It helps that the second half of 2.0 onward seems to be all new stuff, which helps lessen the feeling I got after watching 1.0 that Rebuild is a dumbed-down version of the show.

I'd still recommend the series/EoE over Rebuild, but Rebuild is awesome in its own ways. The spectacle of some scenes is amazing, stuff that they could never do on a show's budget (although, again, sometimes the CG is incredibly irritating). Seeing some classic scenes again with crisper animation can be nostalgic. The soundtrack is great. Totally worth watching after you watch the original 90s stuff, imo.

I originally preferred the dub until I heard the Japanese dub for End of Evangelion.

I heard the voice actor blew out her vocal cords for a certain scream in the movie and that's the take they ended up using.

You can't fake that kind of dedication no matter the language.
I went back and rewatched the series in Japanese and its a whole lot better.

I have a soft spot for the English dub of the show and EoE because it's what I watched first, but the Japanese dub is unquestionably better. There's other stories about the recording of EoE that are dramatic, to say the least.

That said, I will always love the ADV dub's original Gendo, Misato's smoker voice, and Kensuke's hilarious stereotypical nerd voice. The acting is pretty much inexcusably bad in some spots (jesus FUCK the council in the second episode cracks me up every time. It sounds like one guy doing six voices), but then again, subtlety isn't Evangelion's game in any language. I don't feel too bad about enjoying the dub.

That sequence has to be one of the most fucked up things ever put to film. Ever. Anywhere.

I wish I could watch it again for the first time. The sense of dread and despair and bleakness was so unique.

Best Evangelion dub is the Scottish dub.

Feeling down? This song should make you feel bett--hey, wait a minute...
Man I have no idea why, but each time I listen to that song I feel kinda happy, sad and nostalgic at the same time. I don't know if it's because of the song or EoE that I might associate with it, but it's really special.

Yeah same here.

It also reminds me of Hey Jude

In all likelihood, at the very least, we'll have to wait till the Rebuild films are all out.

It's a bummer, but IIRC the original masters for the show aren't exactly in the best of shape, some of them are even lost for certain episodes.

Still, I'd kill for a pristine Blu Ray re-mastering of EoE.

Would be cool if they redo each episode with Rebuild's quality (dat HD). That would probably take a long time to come out on blu-ray/whatever the popular format will be by then. I can imagine them having to redo some audio work (VA, sound effects, etc.) to higher quality, too.

I definitely want a remaster of End of Evangelion. Funimation needs to get to it.

As long as they don't make all the Evas CG. Some shots in Rebuild are alright but for the most part the CG is way too jarring.

There's something must richer about cel animation that I prefer in general, as well. I mean aside maybe from frame count, I prefer the original over Rebuild here:

And yeah, Blu Ray End of Evangelion is probably one of my most desired things in life. That movie deserves to be seen in as pristine a print as possible. I'd also love for them to do a proper dub so that people who watch it in English aren't subjected to the pivotal translation mistake and farty sound effects ADV added. I mean I know subs are the way to watch foreign films, but like... the dub of EoE feels like a sick joke in spots, and I'm actually fond of some of the English cast.

I used to watch plenty of Anime (grew out of it for the most part), and I also concur that CG mixed in with proper animation looks weird and out of place.

The Rebuilds did it pretty well, I think. I liked how they did the command centre UI with keeping track of the pilots' sync ratio, stats, and the warnings. It looks slick as hell.

Oh yeah, that's true. I do think all of the HUD/UI/computer porn in Rebuild is fucking awesome. But even then (excuse my tumblr searching)...

The old stuff looks baller.

I'm sure Funimation will get the TV series and End of Evangelion, eventually. Then, they'll redub both and release bad Blu-Ray upscales of the Renewal of Evangelion versions of the TV series, Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion!

I never realized how bad the official Region 1 release of End of Evangelion was until I saw a Renewal clip on YouTube.

Spoilers for anyone that hasn't seen End of Evangelion yet.
