I'm sure Funimation will get the TV series and End of Evangelion, eventually. Then, they'll redub both and release bad Blu-Ray upscales of the Renewal of Evangelion versions of the TV series, Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion!

don't break my heart with your truths ;-;

Would be cool if they redo each episode with Rebuild's quality (dat HD). That would probably take a long time to come out on blu-ray/whatever the popular format will be by then. I can imagine them having to redo some audio work (VA, sound effects, etc.) to higher quality, too.

I definitely want a remaster of End of Evangelion. Funimation needs to get to it.
Nothx.

I'd prefer a proper film transfer (whatever the process is called) of the original. Since Eva was shot on film, it should look pretty good on BD.

Can't wait for Bebop's BD Box set* to come out soon; I hope Eva is next . . . some day.

*Can I borrow $500 from someone?

Oh yeah, that's true. I do think all of the HUD/UI/computer porn in Rebuild is fucking awesome. But even then (excuse my tumblr searching)...

The old stuff looks baller.
Yeah, I love what they did! And all 2D digital work was done in-house, in both the series and the old theatrical films, by what was called GAINAX SHOP... beautiful work for such little team! Probably working simultaneously on computer programs (like screen-savers, for example) and complete games was inspiration and help in achieving the look they wanted with expertise.

Some episodes were really poor in terms of drawing though. I remember that unit 01 going berserk was really ugly, as well as character faces in the episode that features some kind of spider angel in Tokyo.

As long as they don't make all the Evas CG. Some shots in Rebuild are alright but for the most part the CG is way too jarring.

There's something must richer about cel animation that I prefer in general, as well. I mean aside maybe from frame count, I prefer the original over Rebuild here:

And yeah, Blu Ray End of Evangelion is probably one of my most desired things in life. That movie deserves to be seen in as pristine a print as possible. I'd also love for them to do a proper dub so that people who watch it in English aren't subjected to the pivotal translation mistake and farty sound effects ADV added. I mean I know subs are the way to watch foreign films, but like... the dub of EoE feels like a sick joke in spots, and I'm actually fond of some of the English cast.

Well, Yoh Yoshinari is one of the best animators of all time.

The end of Episode 26 is between the real world scenes in EOE and the Shinji/Rei scene in the LCL.

The ending of EOE is the ending. Confirmation of the barrier between people and rejection.

I don't think you got it Jinroh. You should watch both again.

It's been years since I've seen the series and I certainly do need to watch it again soon, but.....

I remember the TV series ending being the result of the rejection of instrumentality whilst EoE showed the results of its acceptance, no?

Spoilersville! Beware! Do not click the link here if you haven't seen End of Evangelion.

I took some caps of the the scene in EOE where they quickly flash the remains of Unit 02 before Shinji lets out his blood curdling scream. Gross, but always interesting to see the Eva's insides. http://superpatrick.minus.com/mbmbzay8bdKb95

The best episode was where Shinji and Asuka had to train to music to synch their movements.

The worst moment was when the Japanese VA of Asuka tried to pronounce german.

That episode was a ton of fun to watch. One of my favourites.

And I think Kaji's Japanese VA speaking English in 2.0 was worse. I had subs on, and it took me a moment to realize he was speaking English.

Not to say that I didn't enjoy 1.0, but it was a bit disappointing seeing how they treaded on mostly the same things from the series. 2.0 is where the Rebuilds begin to differentiate from the TV series.

*Sigh* I didn't like NGE to be completely honest, I found it to be boring, I mean it uses symbolism heavily to tell a story instead of character interaction, and it doesn't help but to have a pretty unlikable protagonist.

The animation is top notch, I give that.

You really think there's more focus on the symbolism than the characters? Hmm, not sure I agree with that.

You do realise the symbolism's there just to look cool, right?

The religious symbolism in NGE is actually not used in any sort of religiously meaningful fashion. According to Evangelion Assistant Director Kazuya Tsurumaki:

"There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us. Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice"

Having an unlikable protagonist is entirely intentional and necessary.

I just heard the English dub for the first time, oh god...

Spike Spencer is a magic man.

Creators are often in the wrong about their creations, and the fact that there was no symbolic attempt behind the use of religious imagery in EVA doesn't mean that the series or film carries no figurative, allegorical meaning in its storytelling whatsoever, particularly in the way its characters tend to relate to each other.

I do, however, feel that there are few innate (or, at least, interesting) Christian themes specifically or religious themes in general in any of the works in this franchise, and I find that especially amusing that the Western audience for anime attached itself so strongly to that aspect of Evangelion when there are works of Japanese animation that deal specifically with Western religions in heavily metaphorical ways that languish in obscurity. Ah well.

This is a good post. The overt symbolism would have been far worse if it was intentional. Good symbolism and metaphor rarely is. Evangelion may not specifically intentionally address any Christian themes, but the imagery gives identity to several universal themes that happen to relate to religion (apocalypse, sacrifice, fate vs free will, etc) and the show would definitely be worse off without said images.

I read this on evacommentary.org and thought it was appropriate...

According to a very frank and open 40-minute interview by Anno on the NHK TV program Top Runner (www.nhk.org.jp/tr/) about a week or so ago, all religious and philosophical references, while providing a coherent setting for the story, were used for the specific purpose of looking cool and to make Anno & company appear intelligent. Anno himself called it “pedantry” (the display/parading of one's intelligence), and this is backed up by comments by Tsurumaki and other staff as well.

Hexon.Arq: "I'll be perfectly honest and say that I am one of those people who believe that the lack of substance in the religious symbolism is part truth, part blatant falsehood. Things like cross-explosions and esoteric names may fit the description of frivolous window dressing, but other occurrences simply make too much sense to be dumb luck."

Reichu: "Pedantry aside, I think that the religious symbolism used in NGE should be viewed within the context of the show itself and how it oftentimes reinforces some of the themes and ideas being presented. Some of the references are empty and just there to “look cool”, but others do, like Hexon.Arq says, have more "substance" to them — just not in an actual religious context."

So in terms of DVD releases, is the Platinum boxset all you would need? There's a ton of different ones on Amazon and some of the prices are nuts. Also should I just skip Death/Rebirth?
