Gamespot said:
Microsoft has now sold 50 million Halo games since the series launched more than a decade ago with 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved. The company announced the news this morning, reiterating that players have spent more than 5 billion hours playing Halo on Xbox Live.

Prior to Halo 4's worldwide launch on November 6, the Halo series stood at 46 million in sales. This suggests Microsoft's newest entry has shifted 4 million copies thus far. Halo 4 generated $220 million in 24-hour revenue at launch, with $300 million expected for its first week.

Microsoft has released eight Halo games to date, all of which have been first-person shooters, with the exception of 2009's strategy game Halo Wars. These include Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), Halo 2 (2004), Halo 3 (2007), Halo Wars (March 2009), Halo 3: ODST (September 2009), Halo: Reach (September 2010), Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (2011), and Halo 4 (2012).

Bungie Studios created the Halo series, though the company has since moved on to an all-new franchise to be published by Activision. Microsoft's new 343 Industries label is now responsible for all things Halo, and is currently working on at least Halo 5 and Halo 6.

So is that a slower rate than the previous games? Because it seems like that to me. Maybe Halo just isn't as big as it once was? Its still sold very well though.

Like others have said this and CoD releasing within a week of each other was some very sloppy work from MS and Activison.

Still congrats as 4 mill is not to be sniffed at all.

Halo Reach did 2.some million in a similar span of time, if I recall.

Halo Reach sold 3.3 million copies on its first month. I can't find any info on Halo 3's first month sales.

Congrats 343. I love the game more than the other outputs from bungie this gen. You deserve all the success in the world!

Edit: Halo 3 (all three SKUs - Xbox 360) – 3.3 million According to NPD.

So this is the highest first month for any Halo. Whoa, what the fuck are you smoking if you think that's low.

Are those sales numbers comparable to those of the COD franchise? Need to know if killing the multiplayer's identity was worth it.

Most FPS franchises would be happy to see 4 million in sales in a six month span. Laughable to call that low.

well, if this sells 3.3m in NPD, like Halo 3 and Reach and 2 even! that leaves like roughly 700k for the rest, ~400k of which are in UK.

still for a November debut this is pretty bad to just sell 3.3m again when Reach and 3 where in Sep with smaller userbase. as for Europe, Halo Reach sold over 1m before the end of 2010, numbers were from MCV in one of the PAL charts threads that now I can't find.

Within a span of one month? Impressive.

Halo 4 released on like November 5th.

Ha, am talking about the series hitting 50 millionl. Pay attention!

That´s not true. Reach did 3.3 million in the first month in the US alone.

Expected as much. May need to mock some mockers from NPD a few months back.
Not that the numbers bad, its a new trilogy - my only thing would be is I think a subtitle would help with 2/3 being the sequels to that sub-title.

We'll find out how it compared to Halo 3 and Reach's openings in a few hours when NPD comes out.

I believe Halo 4 had by far the longest time in an NPD chart of the three, so timing shouldn't be a problem.

Evidently, I do not recall. Good stuff! Funny how CoD has warped peoples' perceptions of sales to the point where they're calling this low in absolute terms, or low for the series when it's better than previous Halo debuts.

It´s not about COD warping anything. This is Halo 4. A numbered Halo. It should have done more than Reach in the US in the first month which most likely it did not. It also means that releasing close to COD took its damage on sales.

For NPD (North America only):

01. Halo: Reach (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - 3.3 Million (Released September 14th)

01. Halo 3* (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - 3.3 million (Released September 25th)

XX. Halo 4 (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - ? million (Released November 6th)

4m worldwide shipped would be really low. If it's actual sold through it would still mean a weaker debut in the US compared to past entries in the series.
We'll see tonight with the NPD numbers though.

Releasing it a week from CoD was a bad move when they announced it and it's looking like sales wise it will be proven to be a bad move.

Pretty much this. Reach did 3.3 million with only 19 days tracked on that NPD, and that's US only. Halo 4 has done 4 million in 30 days, and that's worldwide. Also consider that Reach came out 2 years ago to a smaller userbase, and in September.

Stellar numbers by any measurement, but there has to be a bit of disappointment internally; this looks like at best they only matched Reach numbers. Regardless of whatever the reaction has been post-release, they very clearly fucked up by releasing a week before Call of Duty.

Edit: If the 4 million is shipped, that's bad (relatively speaking), that probably puts it under Reach.

Thanks.
Consistency there then; thanks. Maybe a mistake going all in for Christmas with Halo 4 and getting lost in the multi-platform mix.

NPD numbers will be interesting.
