Why is everyone thinking it will be easier? They will probably just be more clear with certain stuff, but that's it.

Because that's not what they are saying. They are using the words more direct, less subtle, more accessible, more straightforward, Elder Scrolls. It looks like they REALLY are focusing on making it like that instead of that being simply a secondary objective.

I highly doubt that they'll make the game easier, the Souls games are known for their challenge, and the developers love the gamer feedback around this so why would they change it?

That lava was fucking bad. Dragon asses were not hard to fight but really annoying and completely bad looking. Also Asses had this jumping attack that was just bad looking and out of place

I am going to remain optimistic in the hope the Souls formula for success isn't fucked with too much, and its just stuff like online systems and covenants theyre going to make more accessable.

I think I saw plenty of old environments in that trailer from the Dukes Archives, the entrance to Blight Town I believe from The Depths, and even the rooty entrance to the DLC world. Will be weird if revisiting areas will be a thing as a first for a Souls game, but might also explain an accelerated dev process if theyre 'designing over the top' of the previous games blue prints for instance.

But Dark Souls II. WOO!

Accelerated? It most likely won't be due out till end of 2013. That will be two years.

Because of SCAMCO.

I know, this is gaf, but it blows my mind how people are already worrying about shit. There is no reason to doubt the souls team.

Because everytime they announce broader audience this means that game will be focused more on casual people meaning opposite of what hardcore people want and seriously how the fuck they said that instead of:

"With Dark Souls II World will be bigger, more challenging and it will be even more immersive to player with upgraded combat system and with tons of gear"

The first time I entered Lost Izalith and saw all of the enemies, the bloom, and the lava, I believe the first words I uttered was "are you fucking kidding me? what the fuck is this?" because it seemed just absurd to me. It was the first and only major time in the game it seemed cheap, like it seemed like an area to pad some artificial challenge.

When I learned the dragons didn't respawn, it was more cheap on a level of artificial padding, but fuck that area. That's probably the massive blemish on a game that's realized in nearly every other regard.

That's probably not what he meant. Lore /= story.

In DkS Lore===Story, everything is in the game and available but you can just skip them if you don't want to hear about it. If you count out all the lore available from the item descriptions, there's still like 20 characters who you encounter, find out their motivation, past and future. Or you can just kill them and be done with them (feels bad man).

How far was Blight town into Dark Souls? That's where I stopped. It was too taxing and the frame rate ruined it. I still loved what I played though.

Some Gaffers (most, maybe) are jaded beyond salvation. You've got people here who claim the Souls games are their favorites ever and then go on to doubt From. It's hard to watch.

Yep, people should wait until the first previews or gameplay videos before starting to worry that much (and people should also stop mixing what the devs said and what the press said). After their previous games, I trust FROM entirely on this one.

Otherwise, I can't believe some people think the trailer looks more like Skyrim than DS. The MC's armour looks exactly like the kind of armour you'd get in a souls game, the environments look really similar to what was in dark souls (the snowy bit looks like the painted world of Ariamis, Skyrim didn't invent snow ffs), and dragons were already a big part of Dark Souls' lore.

Bed of chaos?that was hard?dragon butts were more of a nuisance than anything.

Not so much hard as it was just a completely stupid end cap to a non-level. I died a lot the first time because I felt it wasnt very clear at first how to kill him. Oh, and don't tell me you knew the
floor was going to give way
. Also, next to Seath the scaless, the run to get back to the bed of chaos was just fucking annoying (albeit easy).

*ow ow hot lava hot lava

* lol, can't catch me without feet, fire breathing stone dragon Buddha things!

* eeeeww, 'scuuuuse me Octupus slime monster

* Hey what's down heeeeeeeeeere.... Weeeeeeeee.....

That about right?

It was already mentioned, that the Elderscrolls comment was probably made by Edge.

Oh my gawwdddd :O

Sure, it was just a cg trailer, but I'm hyped as hell. Demons' and Dark have been amazing. Really looking forward to DSII.

I judge things on a case by case basis. I'm not going to immediately assume something is going to be good just because it comes from X company. Speaking of which:

http://www.edge-online.com/news/introducing-edge-249-dark-souls-ii-unveiled/

Their descriptions of how they intend to mould Dark Souls II into a more approachable form seem reasonable. But Shibuya admits that their approach will be influenced by their individual characters. “I personally am the sort of person who likes to be more direct than subtle,” he tells us. “[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable.”

Different directors is a noticeable change, but yeah, I have good faith until we start seeing any footsteps in the wrong direction. When pubs start banging an "accessibility drum" in the games opening PR, a little cringe of concern is only healthy when the Souls games represent something not found in most AAA titles.

lol ok.

I bought the PS3 version a while back of Dark Souls but it's still in the wrapper. Do I need to play Demon Souls to get a good understanding of the story or am I fine with just reading a quick summary online?

A bit sad it's for current gen, but here is hoping they put some effort into the PC version this time. The fact that PC is already announced is a good sign and I think they made a nice margin with the Prepare to Die Edition.

I'm looking forward to it, but the quotes in the Edge thread have me worried. I'll wait for more info and gameplay videos before I get hyped. I'm not interested if Dark Souls II is dumbed down/easier than its predecessors. But if more accessible means more polished and a better framerate then I'm all for it, of course.

No you don't need to play Demon's Souls,Dark Souls has it's own world.

No connection between them.

edit - beat

Here's to hoping the game is hard, but without making you walk for 20 minutes to get back to where you were killed.

It's artificial difficulty, and 100% unnecessary.

I hope they fix that.

It's stealth grinding. Everytime you die and go back to pick up your previous stash, you'll have gained even more souls along the way. Repeat the process a few times and you've just unknowingly grinded for souls and can now power your character up to have a better chance at beating the boss.

Sorry but i didn't see anything good in this teaser, i understood that this is ds2 only thanks to the the title at the end, it could have been a new elder scroll or another rpg.
Where are the strange monsters? Where are the original locations? All i see is a very bland and unoriginal western rpg.
Obviously from software has all my faith, but this trailer is nothing good.

Nope, you can just start with Dark Souls. Dark Souls and Demon's Souls have completely different continuities, worlds, and stories.

Vague story and obscurity are easier to do on first entries than sequels. By making a sequel they have to show familiar stuff (the undead, the idea of darkness and light, dragons) while posing new mysteries for the acquainted with the series (who's the girl, what's with the masked people, who's the dragon, which city is the one shown in the trailer).

Souls games don't need no cutscenes telling us the story. The vague/obscure way is the nature of these games.

Yeah, the bed of chaos was really a pain in the arse. There are so many ways to get killed in one hit against this boss (although, most of them consist of falling down into the numerous holes that appear everywhere as the "fight" goes along). The last part where you need to jump across the gap was pretty annoying as well.

That about right?

Hahaha, that's so true. Although, I do have a route like that for pretty much every boss in the game.

Edit:

If you really play 20 minutes without encountering a new bonfire you're probably doing something wrong.

When the guy who fathered both Souls games is no longer directly involved and the guy who replaced him flat out states that he's not one for subtlety and likes having things clearly spelled out, there's legitimate cause for concern.

Even the fucking CG trailer already has a different look and feel to the previous trailers.

Filing this one under bastardization until proven otherwise.

Thanks for the quick responses. Might give it a shot later in the month. I'm not a patient guy when it comes to gaming, but I do love a good challenge.

So yesterday, I didn't let the hype grab me.

Went to bed.

Woke up today.

Still not as hyped as I "should" be.

I'm glad I've changed. It's for our better good.
LET'S REUNITE IN DARK SOULS 2 THREAD <3 (I MISSED U)
Yeah, for sure man.
by the swelling of yoshi's thumbs, something dark souls this way comes
Ugh.
Haha, It won't let you go. It owns your soul dude.
My soul wants to let me go ._.

That applies only if you can reach it and stay alive. Through dark souls it just felt petty to make you treck through a dungeon to hed back to a boss that killed you. The most enjoyable fights for me were without exception those that I could save by, even if I lost my souls.

It's not required for the game to be hard, and is lazy in its extension of play time and difficulty. I would see it removed and still not diminish the game at all.

But it's really not unnecessary. It's about having actual loss associated with failure, which elevates the whole gameplay experience compared to pretty much everything else out there.

Really now? I thought it screamed "Souls game" the whole way through.

Technically the two directors have never worked on a Dark Souls game, at least so far as I can see. Or any From game for that matter. Which is kind of weird. And the only one with credits on previous titles worked as a CG designer for a firm (Digital Artist Guild Inc) that is contracted to do CG work and modelling by various companies, like Capcom.

But then everyone has to start somewhere, and Hidetaka Miyazaki is still supervising.

Loss of souls? Sure. Punish me for my death.

But not time. Do not waste my time as a punishment. That does diminish the quality of the game for me. My time should never be wasted as a player.

Bingo.

I'm not really sure what people are asking for here. Save states? Enemies that don't respawn?

Really now? I thought it screamed "Souls game" the whole way through.

Personally, the tone is so different that had I not known before hand that it was the Dark Souls II trailer, I would have thought it was a new IP game playing Follow The Leader with Dark Souls.

Time is not lost, because for every death experience is gained. Not in the form of arbitrary points, but actual experience that allows for progression.

When the character showed up it was almost clear to me, the music sealed it then.

I don't know about you guys, but doesn't this trailer remind you of that pre-rendered Assassin's Creed Revelations trailer?

Yeah, has a DIGIC look to it.

As someone who LOVED the boss fights in Dark/Demon's souls,

but

HATED everything in between.

I'm still super excited about any followup since I did enjoy the changes in Dark Souls and hope they continue them.
