It's nice that the movies are still somewhat "real", even for a non-Trekkie like me. I'm getting kinda fed up of reboots.

Besides, it's part of the plot. That's the story they wanted to tell.

Is that the one that starts with the kid (which I think is an amazing trailer except specifically for that part) or the other one?

Yep, I also liked everything except for kid Kirk.

Hmm actually I'm not sure if I like Trailer 2 or Trailer 3 better for ST09.

On the one hand, Trailer 3 doesn't have the kid. On the other hand, it also doesn't feature kid Spock, and that part connected with general audiences well.

Did they put Trailer 2 or Trailer 3 in theatres before other movies?

The best way to sell ST'09 is through the Kelvin encounter, so any trailer that pushes that hard is a winner. Honestly, that scene basically inspires to forgive just about any flaw the film had after it. It hooks trekkies and non-trekkies alike by being about the literal sacrifices people make in the name of exploration and just plain being very exciting.

I think it would have been a much more poorly received film were it not for that scene.

Yeah, whichever trailer editor decided to put "Your father was captain of a starship for 12 minutes" overtop of the choir from that song is a genius. I've never been so fucking hooked or emotionally invested by an opening scene so quickly. Bana, Tahir, Morrisson, and especially Hemsworth brought their A-game, then Giacchino sold it.

Every little thing about it introduced us perfectly to the more grounded aesthetic, while also servicing the story.

So what is his role in the movie?

He's the new member of the crew

I agree that scene won it a lot of goodwill (hell, it arguably gave Hemsworth a Hollywood career), but I thought it was pure schmaltz. Giacchino was pulling overtime in the music direction, to the point of being overbearing.

Yep. It was hugely schmaltzy. As was the whole film. As is, frankly, Trek in general. If it was gonna be a problem in that scene, nothing in the movie is likely to win you over.

It may be dumb, but the thing that I liked most about the opening scene was the cut to silence when people are getting sucked out, happens again when Vulcan implodes. Can't remember the person's name who suggested it, but they deserve a medal.

I love Trek and thought the reboot was a lot of fun. This teaser seems to have the same spirit, so I'm looking forward to it.

I wonder who the villain is. Q? Khan? Somebody new?

That teaser was pretty bad-ass, and the guy's voice was appropriately chilling. I'm very excited. ST09 is one of my favorite sci-fi flicks.

I just hope they don't kill Spock or something lame like that.

Looks like they screened the full trailer at BNAT today and some tweets got posted which TrekMovie compiled here:

Full STAR TREK trailer indicates hands against glass scene is actually Spock and Cumberbatch. If he’s Sybock… Well, kudos.

That said, Cumberbatch does NOT have Vulcan ears. Hands against glass scene seems to be Cumby in the brig.

Trailer opens with Pike VO, telling Kirk he has courage but no humility, and someday that will get him and his crew killed.

Oh yeah: there’s space stuff in the full TREK trailer. Space combat. Guy in a space suit zooming around.

In the trailer cumberbatch is addressed as "Commander Khan"

Haven't been keeping up with news on this film much, but wouldn't that not make much sense if he is supposed to be Khan? He would be called Commander Singh. You wouldn't called Kirk Captain James.

A lot of cultures put the family name first. Kira Nerys is Major Kira while her given name is Nerys.

I know that, and it was explicitly pointed out in regards to Bajorans when Picard made that slip-up with Ensign Laren *ahem* Ro. But I'm pretty sure that as far as Khan Singh, Singh was his surname. Irrelevant of course if the person to whom I was responding was just making things up, but just felt like pointing it out.

Why would Spock do the hand glass thing with Cumberbatch? It evokes the idea that they are best friends like when he did it with Kirk in The Wrath of Khan. If Cumberbatch is the villain, how is he also a friend as close to Spock as Kirk is? Is this going to be some bait and switch where he isn't even the villain and Peter Weller is?

Don't know what state Cumberbatch is in for that scene (or the events leading to it), but Spock doesn't have to be his bestie to do that. Maybe he's trying to comfort him?

"I have returned to have my vengence" doesn't make any sense for Sybok. Its definitly either Mitchell or Khan, and I hope to hell and back its Mitchell.

I am still confused as to why they never told Nero's background more effectively in the film. He is a tragic figure but they portrayed him as a typical volatile villain

Its really a huge fuck up on their part. They don't want comics to be required to understand what's going on but the comics fleshed out the whole thing so it made sense what was going on with Nero etc.

If you're referring to the trailer, Giacchino didn't write any of the music in that trailer. It's music from one of those stock trailer music companies (though it became so popular they released it on an album along with some more of their stock trailer selections - including some music that had been used in the Wall-E trailer).

As for Cumberbatch - it's obvious he's playing Lwaxana Troi, I mean, it's plainly obvious.

Just hit me that this will be the first time in Trek that Majel Barrett hasn't done the computer voice. :(

Unless they're clever with any possible computer lines and can reuse her voice from all the previous series and films.
