Except when it doesn't. As in Star Trek 4, where Earth is just as it should be, minus the race of genetic supermen dictators that should have already been in charge for any of that stuff to make sense.

It doesn't matter, I just like to laugh at the weirdness of it all.

It's the beauty of near future scifi. Set your story in the near future, and everyone gets to have a laugh when the time comes.

Nah, the eugenics war was in the 90s.

Or just not mention when in the past it was launched. In Earth's past race of superman were launched into space in a cryogenic sleep due to lack of warp drive technology. Volia, simple as that. Just skim over the 1996 inconsistency. They can't outright change the date, the timeline didn't diverge till when Kirk was born. For example for the JJ Abrams Trek films the series Enterprise is 100% canon still.

I love even with the soft reboot by resetting the timeline in the 23rd century they still have some timeline baggage to deal with. Trek canon is a messy thing.

messy doesnt even begin to show it. enterprise moved the war to the 2030's but left the 1996 thing as an expremental thing. They then say two diffrent ships left (they explain it as after the botany bay the rest were prison ships) and created the "humanoid" Klingons of TOS Original Universe which explains the Briar Patch (Nemises) and Wolf's Embarriment when asked about the lack of ridges (DS9 rememeberance of the Trouble with Tribbles Episode) etc.

Yep, which means Khans rise to power would have been in the 80's.

Supermen or no, world domination takes a long time. :)

I think even in Space Seed it was described as having happened pretty much entirely in the 90s.

I don't think people really consider the portrayal of the 80s as canon-busting in general. Khan is presumably out there somewhere, but the US is still largely similar to our own universe at that point.

It's just a line of thought I got into after doing the Space Seed/TWoK double header. No big deal.

Yeah if I recall they specifically mention 1992-93 as when the supermen sieze control of dozens of countries around the world. War lasts for 3 years then Khan and friends abandon ship.

And even then the Eugenics War never really hits the United States and other major powers and is instead devastating for Asia, Africa and the Middle East basically. Basically take the modern world and where dictators easily rule and take power and just scifi it up and boom eugenics war regions

You know, people are saying the teaser doesn't feel enough like "Star Trek", but I think once a full trailer comes out those ST elements will be more visible.

I'm hyped for this. I think Cumberbatch is going to OWN.

I just punched my monitor. You owe me a new one. :P

Just saw this.

http://www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/a-day-at-bad-robot-gives-us-a-better-look-at-star-trek-into-darkness/3

A guy doing a STID press junket at Bad Robot has a compelling theory (albeit one he only half-believes himself) that the villain of the movie is...

(Those of you complaining about the name Gary Mitchell shouldn't even bother un-spoiler-ing.)

...Robert April.

Wouldn't make any sense since this timeline is way too different. He is never Captain of the Enterprise etc

Giving the whole thing the benefit of the doubt I could see how it could work but man that would be even more obscure than Mitchell for a Villian and the whole premise would be based out of the animated cartoon

I was just thinking about Robert April earlier today.

Certainly a blank slate.

It really doesn't matter. Keeping it secret is just keeping fans talking. The average movie goer doesn't know April, Mitchell, and I'd even say the average person has no real clue who Khan is either. They're not going to gain or lose moviegoers because of tho the villain is.

Exactly. I mean, who the hell was Nero? It didn't matter. People still saw the movie.

Watching the trailer again, Cumberbatch says "You think your world is safe. It is a comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance."

I don't think Mitchell would say that because Kirk left him for dead.

Also, these lines could be taken out of context. It's possible he's describing another threat to Earth, not himself.

Maybe JJ will pull a huge twist and Cumberbatch plays a hero and Peter Weller is the villain. Some wild guesses have Peter Weller as part of Section 31. Maybe the lie would be a reference to something Section 31 has covered up.

The "Enjoy these final moments of peace, for I have returned to have my vengeance" could be from another scene. Perhaps Cumberbatch confronting the true villain.

Kirk basically screwed Mitchell out of godhood, I'd say that's a pretty good framework for "revenge"

Yes but it sounds like Cumberbatch is talking to a larger audience than just the Enterprise crew in the trailer. It seems like something one would say to the whole planet or something. Why would he say that because Kirk wronged him?

Cumberbatch is an anthropomorphized take on the Whale Probe from Star Trek IV, and he's very pissed about the lack of Humpback Whales in this timeline.

Cumberbatch is V'Ger. Cumberbatch is the salt monster. Cumberbatch is Mudd. Cumberbatch is a giant Tribble. Cumberbatch is a Q. Cumberbatch is Guinan.

I wouldn't mind a side quest in this movie or the next where they have to introduce a predator to a planet overrun by Tribbles.

Cumberbatch is V'Ger. Cumberbatch is the salt monster. Cumberbatch is Mudd. Cumberbatch is a giant Tribble. Cumberbatch is a Q. Cumberbatch is Guinan.

Cumberbatch is the reincarnation of Gene Roddenberry that has come to exact vengeance for all Trek fans that do not like the rebooted universe.

No, Cumberbatch is the fat trader who had the Tribble, and Kirk killed his business after taking away his trade license after the tribbles got to all the grain in the storage compartments storage compartments.

I figured it out, guys. It's so obvious. We know the threat is from within Star Fleet and it's a one man weapon of mass destruction.

Cumberbatch is
a photon torpedo.

It's gonna be hilarious when he turns out to be sybok and they just removed e ears for the promotional material

Sybok is the one I know it can't be. No way do they tie this movie in any way to Star Trek V.

I'd believe Cumberbatch is playing a Jefferies tube before I'd believe he's Sybok.

Hell I still don't know who Nero was!

He describes himself as a "simple miner". He's obviously Romulan. What more do you need?

They should introduce the Borg in Star Trek 3. Kirk needs to face the collective! His massive ego will destroy them all.

Why would the Borg be there at that time? Attracted by detecting the advanced technology of the Narada?

Narada was outfitted with Borg Tech so that could work. They would need to dial the borg back to a more primitive state of the collective. Perhaps less robotic but clearly on the path to TNG level borg

Hopefully this movie ends with the Klingons declaring war on the Federation because Cumberbatch did something like assassinate the Klingon Chancellor.

Borg before Klingons just feels wrong man.

Adding the Borg to the Kirk timeline would contradict JJ. Abrams whole statement of "Only Star Trek TOS series matters".

Maybe JJ will pull a huge twist and Cumberbatch plays a hero and Peter Weller is the villain. Some wild guesses have Peter Weller as part of Section 31.

Wait, Peter Weller is going to be in this? That is kind of... awesome....

Peter Weller is going to be in this. They haven't said what character he plays and have managed to divert all attention from him with speculation about who Cumberbatch is playing.

That's why some people think Weller is the real villain and this is all a bait and switch.
