Texas school board bans Confederate battle flag

BUDA, Texas (AP) — A Central Texas school board is banning the Confederate battle flag from district property and district-sponsored events.
Hays board members voted 5-2 Monday to amend the student code of conduct to ban the flag, which was formerly displayed with the Hays High School Rebel mascot. The ban also covers any imagery deemed to be racially hostile, offensive or intolerant.
The action comes after two students were accused of writing racial slurs and urinating on the door of a black teacher's classroom in May at Hays High. The school is in Buda, 15 miles south of Austin.
In October, the Hays board decided to keep "Dixie" as the school fight song. The Confederate anthem has been known to evoke the traditions of proud state and region, but also slavery and prejudice.

For the life of me, I don't understand the Southern obsession with the Confederate flag. Not only is it a symbol of segregation, but its highly disrespectful to entire groups of people.

You're not really saying every Southerner want to secede, are you?

Because some people in the South maybe still want segregation and don't care for other people, you know those kind of people.

Maybe some just like the flag from a purely aesthetic stand point.

Please don't lump everyone who lives in the south with supporting the confederate flag. I live in Texas and think it should be outright banned.

Something something heritage, something something southern pride, something something a bunch of bullshit.

The south will rise you know...

Sigh..

No wonder current republicans are sore losers....

The south have people that re-enacts a battle they lost every year...

I don't think there is any need to ban a flag. It represents an idea from a bygone era which is socially shunned today (by the vast majority). It is seen by the greater populace as a reminder of our greatest failings as a nation. The fact that we don't have to run and hide from it by outright banning it is a virtue of the power of free speech in America.

Plus its like an ID tag for fringe nut balls.

See, more importantly, it's a symbol of losers. Yeah, don't forget: you suckers lost the war. Keep flying that flag of the losing team like you're proud of your assssssss kicking.

The flag is not being banned from the private space. If someone wants to hang the flag on their property I presume they are pretty much welcome to do so.

The school district is part of the government and they feel that the flag does not represents their interests and have decided to ban it from anything that represents them.

I believe that it is fair for them to do that.

If the Government decides not to partake on something, doesn't mean that the public is being banned from doing so.

"Taking" god out of schools is not restricting religion, it is separating religion and government. Two very different things.

The Southern obsession with a losing and failed society is sad.

One of the graduate schools I was in was in the Deep South and each year one of the good ol' boy frats would put up wooden planks and canons all around their frat house to make it look like a fort. They would dress up like confederate soldiers and some sorority would dress up like Southern Belle's, and they would have a cotillion or whatever inside. I always wanted to graffiti fire and write "Sherman marches on" all over it.

Before you know it they'll be banning Nazi flags, a proud symbol of German heritage and also of losing a war.

Because it is a way to express racism while hiding behind the shield of 'honoring our heritage'.

For some reason that excuse is accepted by many whereas most people don't take too kindly to Germans proudly displaying swastikas saying they are just 'honoring their heritage'.

It's not just a Southern obsession. That's a gross generalization. I've seen it flying all over the country. From Aurora, Illinois to Lincoln, Nebraska to Santa Ana, California. I had a neighbor at my old house who is from the UK who flew it in his front yard. He also did Civil War re-enactments.

But I agree with you that it is disrespectful. It is a symbol of a bygone era that has no modern relevance, so put the thing in a museum and leave it there.

The swastika is illegal in Germany but you still see it in grafitti. I suspect there are Germans who are proud of their family's military service in WW2, despite it being stigmatized. And really who would tell them they are wrong? Is it their fault or their ancestors fault their leaders were up to genocide any more than it's an average southerners fault or their ancestors fault that rich plantation owners wanted to perpetuate slavery? I'd say it's not.

Civil war reenactments happen all over the country all the time. Hell its not only the civil war that gets reenactments. They are actually kind of cool and don't have to do with some political party or plan.

Because they don't think the Confederates did anything wrong.

I love that they don't like to get into details about it. Instead the tactic is to change the nature of the discussion to what the North did that was naughty, and how racist Northerners were. I don't mean Southerners, I mean racist Southerners who argue about this shit.

And the best part is what the poster above points out. This was a resurgence in the popularity of the flag DIRECTLY attributed to racism.

I don't think the Swastika nor the confederate flag should be banned. I think social pressure should be enough. And allowing people to use the symbols is nice because it helps law enforcement figure out who they might want to track.

No, neither Germans nor Southerners should feel guilty about the sins of the father. But they shouldn't celebrate those sins. And I can understand wanting to celebrate the hard work of forefathers even if it was misguided. I think 'Das Boot' does a great job of honoring the hard-working U-Boat crews without celebrating the fact that they are Nazis.

There's your explanation right there.

Like I said above there are many reasons to use a symbol. Some people are going to use it because they hate minorities, some like it because it reminds them that their great great grandfather was a badass, and some (like in this thread) are going to use it to paint millions of people as backwards in their fuckthesouth circlejerks.

I can see why they'd have pressure to ban the flag instead of the fight song. Coming from a different South Texas school that also has "Dixie" as our fight song, you'd never recognize it. That was, until a new director came in and told us to play it traditionally. Only then did people care and realize what the song actually was.

Yeah, he literally fucking OWNED people! How could he be any more badass?

The Confederacy, what it stood for, and anyone trying to remember that institution fondly is disgusting. Now, the flag shouldn't be banned, because we shouldn't ban things just because we disagree with them, no matter how vile they are.

I will never get the cognitive dissonance of those in the South who worship the Confederate flag but are also the most AMERICA FUCK YEAH patriotic people in the world.

"YEAH, WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY, but damn they were fuckers in the Civil War and I really wish we had broken off and formed our own country, GOD BLESS THE USA, fuck the United States for oppressing the South!"

SMH

People can still don the flag at their houses if they want.

I believe the schools have a say in what they allow inside.

This is not infringing on anyone's right.

If you think most people fighting for the confederacy were slave owners you are laughably naive. Do you also think most of the german soliders were killing anne franks?

Did I say that? Either they were fighting for the South because they believed in the ideals of the Confederacy, or they were blinded by other factors. But they shouldn't be celebrated for being either racist or stupid.

Heritage... So people are proud of where they are from. Just look at all the Putero Rican flags.
Also segregation was introduced by the Union.

I went to that high school and have told the story on this board about trying to get the official school flag changed from the confederate flag at the time. Surprised they just now completely banned it from campus.

I agree, I was talking about banning in a broader sense, not at a school.

The Putero Rican flags isn't the symbol of a racist uprising against the government of the United States. To compare the two is... ridiculous at a basic level.

Because they don't think the Confederates did anything wrong.

I have a close friend who has a big Confederate flag in his room. He likes it just because it's a symbol of the history of his culture. Although I guess I would argue to him if it means it's appropriate to hang a swastika in your room out of adoration of German culture just because it's a symbol of the history of the nation, to which he and I would probably say no. So there's that.

I can kind of understand the pride of saying "at one point my culture was bold enough to separate itself because of its beliefs", but I think the Confederate flag represents much more than that so I still think it's insensitive.

The only people "from" the Confederacy are a small population of babies born in Confederate states between 1861 and 1865. I don't think many of those people are around anymore.
