NRA blames media, violent video games for violent culture

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Rifle Association is making its first public statement in the wake of the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

The NRA also blamed the media and violent video games for the violent culture.

The organization is also calling on Congress to get a police officer in every school.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre.

Also I find it hilarious since even if you agree on their stance it still all boils down on gun use in said media.

"Through vicious violent video games, with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here's one: It's called Kindergarten Killers. it's been online for 10 years. How come my research staff can find it, and all yours couldn't, or didn't want anyone to know you've found it?"

LaPierre went on to blame other facets of the entertainment industry as well.

"We have bloodsoaked films out there like American Psycho, Natural Born Killers, they're aired on propaganda loops called Splatterdays, and every single day. A thousand music videos portray life as a joke, portray murder as a way of life, and then have the nerve to call it entertainment.

"Isn't fantasizing about killing people to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography," LaPierre added.

I saw a two cats in nature fighting. That is pretty violent. Better ban nature too.

God knows GUNS aren't to blame for SHOOTINGS.
 
Of course. Strangely enough there isn't more violence in the less gun-populated, equally media-addicted Europe.
 
that was a pretty embarrassing press conference throughout. former chairman of the Republican National Committee - Michael Steele - was basically laughing at the lack of serious proposals afterwards
 
I laughed out loud when he said that they're going to make their "armed officer in every school" program available throughout the world.

Movies and videogames dont give you the tools to kill people, well unless you class tossing them at someone as a weapon. I dont get it shouldnt the nra be championing tighter regulations, it will weed out people that really shouldnt be owning a weapon meaning they can come across as doing everything they can?.
 
Why not blame mentally unstable people that can get easily those weapons? The glorification of gun violence is way older, you got the old ass western films for example.
 
I've seen like 1 police car in my high school but the guy is never there... also one officer is not going to do much at all, sorry. Anyway, I don't think Video Games or Media is to blame, honestly.
 
I did find it odd that he didn't bring up Call of Duty. That seems to be the go to game. In fact, the only games that he mentioned are the really over the top ones. Not the games that games that have guns with their proper names.

Sounds like pretty bad odds to me. What if the "bad guy" is a better shot? Personally, I think guns make for mediocre defense but they're great at creating an armed, paranoid society.

That isn't even REMOTELY close to a good analogy.

I side with Scalia on the belief that video games are just another form of speech(or art, whatever floats your boat). Funny that the NRA would be against free speech, but then again I don't agree with anything they say(even though I own firearms).

The problem is you have people saying we need to ban certain models of guns because that will somehow curb gun crime (which is what the assault weapons ban in 1994 did and IT DID NOTHING). Both sides of the argument are stupid. There needs to be a gate stopping you from owning firearms through background checks and psych evaulations. But once you pass I dont see why you cant own what you want.
 
So the police man will be the first target and victim of a killer, thanks to the element of surprise? Are they dumb?

Of course he didn't. Those games show guns being used by military personnel.

Notice how he didn't mention hunting games, either.
 
Clearly, the guns played no part in the tragedy whatsoever.

I'm not saying get rid of guns, but can we at least take an honest look at all the factors, (which includes guns) that led up to what happened on that day?
 
Yeah the narrative has been pushed this direction across most news channels since day 2 after the shooting. At least we got 1 solid day of people talking about gun control. America will ban games before they will ban any type of gun.
 
Why do these people act like violence is a new phenomenon that's spurred on by new media?It seems they would rather find something to blame than work hard to find a solution.I guess i just answered my question lol.
