Movies You've Seen Recently III: The Third Chapter

Been trying to catch up on the rest of the films I need to see before awards season in January. Arbitrary date, but it helps me get it done.

A Life of Pi - Probably my favorite film of the year. It just worked for me. Everything about it did. Every emotional beat put a tear in my eye. It's rare that I see a movie without a single false note. I've seen it three times now and it always gets me. This coming from a God hating atheist.

B- Beasts of the Southern Wild - The primary relationship was great and once it got going I was entertained, but I found it really hard to relate with the characters and I feel like that effected it enough to where I question if I was just missing something. Do I need to see it again in a different context? For like half of this movie I felt kind of depressed. The gross food, dirty environments, and eccentric people really stood out to me in a negative way in those first 30 minutes. It redeems itself enough by the end though.

B+ Django Unchained - Loved it a lot until the shit hits the fan. For some reason I was kind of bored at that moment. Probably because I felt like I had just seen that film with Inglorious Basterds. I understand why Tarantino made that ending in a "roundabout" way, but I was restless at that point and just wanted it to end.

A The Imposter - Really close to Life of Pi for number 1 of the year for me. Such a fantastic use of the documentary format. I love documentaries like this and Man on Wire that act as thrillers. This thing just takes you all over the place.

A- The Queen of Versailles - Amazing look into people who value everything I hate in this world. Yet I was able to empathize with them despite all that.

B+ Indie Game: The Movie - Solid documentary that did get me emotionally at one point. Probably helps that i'm into games and if you don't talk down to me i'll probably love you.

C+ Pitch Perfect: Fun comedy that has a couple great moments (like the sing off in the empty pool), but it felt like a lot of the great comedic actors were wasted.

D+ This Is Forty: What was this? I never thought I'd miss Funny People. This proves to me that Seth Rogan is actually a leading man. These characters were just insufferable. Albert Brooks was the best part of the film along with Jason Segel. They should've made a sequel following Seth Rogan's friends from Knocked Up not these people.

A- Silver-Linings Playbook: Loved the romance. The comedy worked, and most of the family stuff was pretty great. First time in a LOOOOONG time that Robert De Niro has been good. Only problem I had was that scene where they have to explain the parle which went on forever. Felt like really fake exposition.

Thats what im doing

So whats your guys movie collection look like

Aw, I miss my Ilsa and Hammer boxsets :(

The pic is missing some of my stuff like vhs's and my akira kuroawa boxset

This reminds me why my OCD nature when it comes to organizing things refuses to let me buy boxsets or funky special editions. Good looking collection though.

I am slowly rebuilding my collection after selling off most of it while I was in between jobs. Got rid of all my DVDs so I at least get to start over and rebuy everything on Blu-ray without feeling guilty.

Considering what I personally own, that looks like Heaven. My father has a bunch of good stuff, and I'm free to borrow, but I've really only bought some box-sets and a bunch of Criterion-label releases.

Thanks. Theres nothing really too good in my collection, when im out grocery shopping i'll dig the $5 bins to see if any thing catchs my eye

Aw, I miss my Ilsa and Hammer boxsets :(
The Ilsa boxset was the first thing i bought when i got a job. The Hammer boxset was my gift to myself when I moved into my house.

Good looking collection though.
Thanks!

I have arrived...and sadly the only new move I've watched in the last week is This is 40. It was decent, laughed a good amount but Apatow steps over the unbelievability line a few times in terms of some mean-spirited lines Rudd and Mann exchange, so when he attempts for some genuine drama it didn't work for me.

Also rewatched 21 Jump Street and Pitch Perfect, two of the best surprises of the year. I'm going to try and hit up Jack Reacher today.

Like I posted in the previous thread, my last movie this year is gonna be Wrong Turn 2 :( But I started watching Scream 1 last night so I might make it to Scream 3 or 4 today!

Bernie

Checked this out because it was getting awards buzz (maybe because of Linklater), it's a dark comedy, and Jack Black getting nominated for his performance. I was like, pfft, Jack Black? I love him, but a proper performance?

Really cool "based on a true story" movie. It's Linklater so it brings that sort of a mockumentary feel from Waking Life, where the whole town speaks of Bernie and his relation to the rich "bitch" Marjorie Nugent. These are the kind of true stories that are awesome in movies, not boring biographical films where everyone knows the dude and you're there just to see the actor facsimile. Bernie, a super super nice mortician of the town of Carthage, Texas takes care of Marjorie but the evil of her is too much against his niceness. They do show both sides of Bernie which makes you sympathise with him even after committing a huge crime.

Jack Black totally earns the award buzz for his performance, something totally out of left field with a lot of range to his performance although he does bring his amazing falsetto from Tenacious D when he's singing church songs or in his favorite past-time of musicals. Matthew McConaughey in another Texas movie but the complete opposite role as in Killer Joe here as a bewildered district attorney who doesn't understand why the whole town supports Bernie when he does the nasty deed and also has it in for "closeted homosexuals" which made me laugh with the "Is Bernie Gay?" section.

I'm really surprised they didn't change the character names for confidentiality, and when you see the actual couple at the end. Glad I saw it.

One of the funniest bits is the local describing the different counties of Texas. The bit about Panhandle had me laughing out loud (any Texans want to fill me in why it's left out in people's minds?). The Austin bit of basically it being hippies explains why the Alamo Drafthouse and all that culture is there, I want to go sometime.

I just finished watching I Spit on Your Grave. Bold.

I have a icheckmovies and critticker and vaguely update my imdb, I dont think a 4th movie tracking site will be in my needs. Wonder how long it'll take us to fill up this threads space. :P

Prometheus
Safety Not Guaranteed
The Invisible War
21 Jump Street
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer
The Amazing Spider-Man
The Hunger Games

Indie Game: The Movie
The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Some of the films I'd like to see before the Oscars...

Farewell, My Queen
Flight
Headhunters
Holy Motors
Killing Them Softly
Lincoln

The Imposter
The Master
The Queen of Versailles

Turn Me On, Dammit!
Zero Dark Thirty

Any that should take priority or I should add? I'm waiting to see Skyfall until I watch Quantum of Solace. I haven't read my copy of Life of Pi yet (and probably won't).

Tried putting together a non-2012 top 10 list but kinda lost interest. Needless to say, it'd be some combination of Lawrence of Arabia, a couple Alex Gibney docs, a handful of Kurosawa films, and Baraka -- all of which I saw for the first time this year and loved.

Thanks for reminding me of Baraka's existence. I have to rewatch it. It was beautiful.

considering Fallen Angels was originally supposed to be another story in Chungking Express and Chungking Express was released before it, I'd suggest starting with Chungking Express.

Well, bold is certainly a word. Which one?

The 70's version. I can see what they were trying to do but they just didn't have any money.

I also saw that Queen of Versailles documentary, that was very good. The way I viewed the family changed as the movie progressed. I started out feeling sorry for the wife but she turned out to not be so bad at the end, the guy was the real problem in that story. Great documentary.

Can someone suggest a good martial arts movie? Not over the top people flying and unnatural jumps and moves. I just watched never back down 2 and blood and bone, and i really like them. The fighting is great. There´s no jumping 20 meters or doing all kind fictional things that can´t be done physically.

Both! Chungking Express gets so many praise, but Fallen Angels is great as well. So much atmosphere, maybe I like it even more than Chungking.

Not really my genre, but from the top of my head: The Raid: Redemption and/or Ong-Bak?

And from the old thread:
Couple good 'uns:

Life of Pi: beautiful directing and a worthy film that does the book justice.
Robocop: Watched this classic for the first time. Absolutely awesome! Lots of gore, and a great story.
Nightmare on Elm st: Solid horror flick.
Another year: great acting and great script. Really pure film making. Excellent.

I'm not hopping on this newfangled letterbox train. ICM for life.

Ridiculously charming. Will watch many times.

Apparently it's full of fart jokes, which is odd for Ozu. I haven't seen it yet but I guess it's more in line with his comedies from the 30s - some of which are almost slapstick in nature.

So what's the deal with Letterboxd? What makes it different from the icheckmovies, criticker and rym accounts I already have? I'd just sign up and check but it requires invites.

Oh c'mon we have to finish Part II. 60 posts to go! I'm gonna go back over there and talk for a second about The Imposter.

Just for posterity: here's my Letterboxd account page. I've followed all of you guys already, so please try and reciprocate.

Here's the Wall of Shame from the second Movie-GAF thread. This includes the top 10 posters:

heh thanks for this, always fun to see.
I have invites for letterboxd if anyone wants.

It's like criticker and icheckmovies combined and easier to find movies. Better interface.
I'll take one if you're offering. you need an email I'm guessing?

The search interface has more visible filtering options; the diary functions allow users to track which dates they watched a movie on with ease; it links to Twitter (for finding other LB users with Twitter accounts), and Netflix users can add films from their watchlist to their Instant Queue; overall, the site's a looker, and it's the first film social-networking site I've ever used. Those are my reasons.

Flash Point has some solid and realistic fight scenes.

Thanks. I have seen Ong Back 2. I will check 1 and 3.
You're not going to believe me, but the 1972 Chinese movie Ai Nu aka Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan is a genuinely awesome rape revenge-meets-martial arts movie, complete with gorgeous cinematography, morally fungible Shakespearian tragedy, and weird semi-consensual one-sided off-screen lesbian action that was probably totes risque in '72. I mean, what's not to love?

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys :)

I'm playing Fifty-Fifty. Anyone got a Letterboxd I can have?

I just made this GIF for the Netflix thread but I'll post it here since it's awesome.

I love cheesy movies, and Karate Robo Zaborgar may be the highest-quality shitty movie I've ever seen. The plot goes places you don't expect, it's unusually touching in places, and the fight choreography is actually pretty fun. One of my new favorites.
