Wii U Satisfaction Thread

It's fine to talk about this stuff here as far as I'm concerned. We don't have a mega thread and the state of VC in a thread by itself wouldn't get past 2 pages.

The whole "fridge" bit has more to do the Wii being completely hacked to shreds I'd guess. They have to run Wii software in a sandbox otherwise they run a pretty high risk of the same attack vectors that worked with Wii working with Wii U. The only other option would be to hotlink it to the menu and have it boot into the Wii mode sandbox every time you started a piece of software. Which would be ridiculously slow and terrible from an online store perspective. Better for them to retool their emulator and relaunch the VC service at a later date so they can present a properly integrated experience that takes advantage of the hardware instead.

I agree that the situation sucks. I'd like it to be better as well, but it's best to be realistic about these things. When you look at it from that perspective forced double dipping ala recent "HD collections" is a reasonable expectation. Would they buy a bunch of good will by copying the VC forward and giving folks free access? Yes. Do I think it'd translate into more sales than they'd gain out of forcing folks to rebuy? Not at all.

And yes, I love my Wii U, even if I find the backwards compatibility to be generally garbage.

The process of transferring the VC games could take a while. iirc each game has its own emulator designed specifically for it to work on the Wii. They did this to make sure the integrity of each game was preserved as close to 1:1 as possible from the original while increasing their resolutions to 480 in many games. Hopefully we'll get to DL the updates for free a la the Ambassador games on 3DS when they receive eshop versions.

From what I understood, the Wii is literally built into the Wii U, so there should be no emulation as far as recreating the original experience on Wii. I don't see why, at the least, there isn't a link to the SD card right from the Wii U menu.

I'm in the middle. Me and my kids love NintendoLand, but i was a bit meh about NSMBU...just same old same old. ZombiU is cool too.

Ive got Black Ops 2 coming tomorrow, any impressions on how well (or not) it runs with the gamepad?

So I picked up a Deluxe Wii U last night. I am such a weird Nintendo fan. I have LOTS of problems with the way this company handles things, but at the end of the day, I just know I want to play some of their exclusives on every console. So I had a bunch of gift cards laying around, and my wife gets a 10% discount because of her job, so we took the plunge. I also picked up Mario.

The controller really does feel nice, and it seems well designed. Still wish those triggers were analog though. The screen looks nice enough. It really is neat being able to play a game in another room on that controller. I was able to get a fairly decent distance away and it continued working. Walls are clearly the biggest enemy to the signal being sustainable. Going through one was no problem. Two was a problem.

The firmware update took a solid hour on my mediocre internet connection. Only had time to play about 30 minutes of Mario. I liked it a lot. So nice to finally have an HD Mario game in my hands. My wife and I will be checking out Nintendoland tonight. I'm sure between these two games we'll be content for a while.

Really looking forward to seeing how Wonderful 101 turns out. Might be interested in Pikmin 3 as well. Really hoping Nintendo has some great exclusives lined up for later this year.

Lastly, I really am curious to see what Nintendo's Virtual Console plans are for the Wii U. It would be so cool IMO to be able to play Waverace 64 on that gamepad screen at some point. :/

Some people really love it on the gamepad. I'm not really a fan since the game feels a bit less vivid and the colors seem muted. But like I said, others seem to really like it *shrugs*

My LCD HDTV is 6 years old and with no option of "just scan", the GamePad is better than my TV. :/

"Just scan" is a very small factor in the image quality.

New LCD's just have a better color accuracy and black level, so people with those would notice some difference.

I got a Wii U just a few days ago with NSMBU and NintendoLand. I expect to use the WiiU only for the Nintendo titles and a couple exclusives here and there.

For what little I've played (about 13 or 14 hours in total maybe?) I'm definitely enjoying this console much more than I expected, but I still have not even a single friend. Do I need to tell the people that I add to add me as well, or do they get a notification? I still don't know how this works..

Anyway, my NNiD is Mik2121, if anyone around here has the WiU add me and if possible somehow lemme know you're from GAF and your nickname here just so I know who am I adding :P

I've been quite satisfied with the Wii U. There are things I hope they improve upon and fix but overall I'm glad I purchased the system. However at the moment I don't see it being my primary system. That's going to say the 3DS and PC at the moment do the games I want to play. Especially when it comes to the 3DS. However there isn't a day where I don't turn on my Wii U to do something or play something. I just hope they hurry up with the Wii U Virtual Console and announcements for upcoming Nintendo made/published games. If in the end the bulk of my purchases are Nintendo games or Nintendo partnered games then so be it. I'm not going to go crazy over this. The bulk of my PS3 purchases were Sony exclusives and will continue to be as I pick up older games on the cheap. Same for the Xbox 360 when I look my small collection (though no more game buying here).

Now that all of the craziness from holidays is over, I'm able to really get some time in with the off-TV play, and I love it. It's an awesome fit for just curling up on the couch when you don't want to hog the TV, or when you don't want to fill the room with crazy BLOPS explosions and bug the crap out of everybody else :-)

Honestly, I really really really hope that people will keep using and contributing to Miiverse, because it is the most exciting aspect to me by far! I really like just exploring the different communities and looking at the things that people post, and the level of moderation feels just right, I think.

Pad only on Blops2 is great. Reloading does feel awkward, even after I got used to it. I'm back on the 360 as majority of my friends still play on there...

Nintendoland ended up becoming the surprise hit for me. The single player attractions are reminiscent of quarter-eating arcade machines, while the multiplayer games got some friends that are otherwise pretty blah about video games wanting to keep playing. Goes to show that Iwata's thinking wasn't exactly off base when it came to controls: keep it simple, and it leaves the door wide open for people to get into gaming.

Anyone with a Sammy plasma have any lucky colour calibrating the Wii U with HDMI? My colours look terrible on the plasma vs. the rich natural colours on the Gamepad. Does Game mode help at all?

Sounds like your TV doesn't do the full color on HDMI...something about the HDMI from the Wii U that comes out flat if your TV doesn't support something...something...

I can't remember the specifics :(

(EDIT)
LIMITED RANGE

I play on the GamePad only regularly. I find it's a bit muted compared to my TV but not to the point where I'm actually thinking about it when playing.

My LCD HDTV is 6 years old and with no option of "just scan", the GamePad is better than my TV. :/

What's "just scan"? Is that Game mode?

Off-TV play is a godsend for my house. An absolute, utter, unbelievable godsend.

NSMB, Trine 2 and Little Inferno all run great on the pad only, and I know COD is supposed to run well, but what other games are folks playing with the pad only? Ninja Gaiden and Darksiders look like they may work well, but ya never know.

I am a new owner of a WiiU system thankfully due to duplicate games that I've received from Christmas. To tell you the truth, I was very hesitant in getting the system; there were no games out for it other than NSMBU which was the only thing I wanted. After a long and hard deliberation (I could not get full credit for the games unless I use them on the spot) I decided to just plop it down on a system because I rationalized that it was a much better investment than games at this point.

To my surprise, I am actually really enjoying the system. NSMBU was a no brainer since I haven't invested in a 2d Mario in quite sometime and despite only being in World 2, I find myself playing the challenge missions more. I will still continue to play the world but the satisfaction of performing perfect platforming runs is just a rewarding experience.

Nintendoland was my biggest surprise as I originally thought of it as just trade fodder. Dont get me wrong, there are a bunch of crappy games in there but I found the Zelda and Metroid to be a blast. Like NSMBU challenge mode, the satisfaction of just beating times and getting stickers is just addicting lol.

Finally, Miiverse is a grand idea, one which I hope that would catch on. The idea of it is really cool plus who can't help but admire some of the talented people who posts pictures there. There is a lot of potential here I believe and hopefully Nintendo can take care of it.

If you guys would like to add me to your list my nnid is: KooPaL. I look forward in playing with everyone especially when MonHon comes out.

Friend request notifications in the Friend List app were enabled in the second OS update.

My kids and I love the system! It's got something for all of us and the family fun is unmatched in Nintendo Land IMO. We have NSMBU, Nintendo Land, Tank! Tank! Tank!, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed and ZombiU.

I've really enjoyed everything so far. Not just because the system is new, but because I feel like it's delivering some really entertaining local multiplayer stuff while having this background layer of Internet connectivity there for when I want it. I really dig how Miiverse is integrated into the interface and the games. I do feel like it takes some brain power to navigate things, but I kind of like that I'm being challenged by the system.

Certainly it's nice to have better graphics than the Wii, but that's really not why I play videogames anymore. I want entertaining gameplay first and foremost and I really do like it when it's competitive or cooperative that I can share with people in the same room. Wii U is a total winner there much as the Wii was before it.

Really? Last Friday my friend tried to add me through his Friend List app after he set up his system and did his update but I never got a notification and I had to add him back after he personally let me know just like before.

i have a Samsung plasma, its a few yrs old, 720p. the wii u looks great on it.

i am still loving the system, i knew i would like it but i didnt think i would enjoy it as much as i have, Mario, Nintendo Land, Sonic Racing and Little Inferno will keep me busy for a while, just bring on the VC

No idea what might be the problem. But I've been getting friend request notifications in that app since the 2nd update.

I like the system so far. The OS is a bit slow but everything else is great: the controller, Miiverse, the shop and - surprise, surprise - the games. I'm already looking forward to announced games such as Pikmin and Bayonetta. And of course to unannounced games like Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Zelda, Retro game, Monolith game, etc.

I'm very happy with my Wii U. I just let my buddy borrow my 360, since I will be bust with the Wii U, PC and 3DS. Here's a list of games I have for my Wii U:

Assassins Creed 3
Batman Arkham Asylum
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Darksiders 2
Mass Effect 3
Nano Assault Neo
New Super Mario Bros. U
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge
Nintendo Land
Sonic Racing
Trine 2
ZombiU

I have been playing a lot of Mass Effect 3 online as of late. Very addicting. If anyone wants to play online with any of the game I have, send me a friend request via miiverse.

Good to know... just wrapped that one up on PC, however.

I went with Darksiders 2. I know it's got its issues, but to be able to play with off-TV and not get hassled by the sig other about playing games in the other room will make it all worth while.

Hmm, I have a 2011 Samsung plasma. There must be something.. do you have 'game mode' enabled? I just check my AVS forum calibration thread and they said it supports full range RGB. I guess that's good then?

My wife and I really dig our Wii U. I wish there were more games that I wanted at the moment, but I also know that they'll come eventually. The system itself and the user interface is very solid. And of course, Miiverse is super fun.

I had zero interest in Nintendoland, but after playing it, it's my favorite game on the console so far. Really excited to see where this thing goes.

Now... Can we PLEASE get some eShop releases?

Does anyone else's A button seem squishier than the others. Like it is easier to press in. Mine works fine, but I'm worried about longtime durability.

Really enjoying my Wii U so far. Nintendo Land really surprised me as did Mario U.

Question: I'm thinking about going purely digital from here on out for the easy access (no disc swap) factor as well as taking advantage of the digital deluxe promotion. Has anyone else here decided to go this route? What's a good external harddrive to use (bang for the buck)? I have the 32GB internal memory obviously but in the long term I imagine that won't be enough.

Doesn't really pay to go for less than 1TB. The price curve has little benefit under that. Beyond that, figure out how many games you think you'll get over the life of the system. 1TB would be 40 games if games used all 25GB on the not-blu-ray media, and it's probably a heck of a lot more in terms of actual games. For example, Nintendo Land is 3.4GB, or less than a seventh of a disc. Pretty much any size will give you enough life to last the whole generation.

I'm purely digital on my Wii (via homebrew), and it's great. I'm hesitant to do it on the new system, though. I feel that it is likely that physical media decreases in price over time more readily, so even though you'd get 10% in credit for each digital purchase, it's possible that all those purchases will be full price, whereas a three month old physical copy of that must-have game "Sonic Masterstroke Golf" might be 80% lower than MSRP.

Of course, in my case I'm planning to do physical partly in the hopes that homebrew will strike again and eventually give me a way of copying my store-bought games to disc and stowing the original media.

I have a 2011 sammy pdp and the wii gives me a a very clean image after calibration. Game mode on, sharpness at zero, color at 45, cell light maxed, brightness at 50 and all video processing "enhancements" turned off.

Picked up a Basic today. I got Nintendo Land, Zombi U, and NSMBU. Why not a premium? Sold out. Plus, I like white. Plus, I won't be downloading full titles (PSN price syndrome). I figure 24GB is inconsequential over the 8GB model if the discs can hold 24Gb themselves. Managed to get a Wii Remote Plus pack (includes 'chuck and sensor bar) for cheap, too. That's good, because I don't have a Wii as I gave it to my mum. All up, I feel I did okay.

I can't help but feel that some of the criticism is exaggerated. It doesn't take 30 seconds to get to the settings screen. It's more like 10. Still 10 too many, but nothing to rage out about. I guess I'll post impressions of the games soon.

But everyone was telling me there's mountains of WiiU's that they can't sell, wasting away, taking up space in stores! Proof of the WiiU bomba! :P

Definitely agree that the WiiU backlash has been way overblown though. Picked mine up a week and a half ago and have been surprised by how much fun I've been having with it. Also, the controller, off-TV play and Miiverse really feel unique and a step forward (no matter how much people want to say it's 'not next-gen.' lol) I do wish that we had more of an idea of what's coming though. I suppose Nintendo is saving that for E3/Nintendo Directs. Oh well, at least have Pikmin 3 to look forward to.

Holy crap, playing blops2 in bed on the gamepad absolutely rules .
and to think i almost bought Black Ops: declassified.
Wii U has some major potential.
edit: Good god the web browser is FAST. And really smooth!

I'm thinking about going digital-only (currently owning a single retail disk), but I'd be going even further as flash drive/SD cards only (currently using a flash drive, with a switch to SDXC pending).

Apparently the 32GB of internal memory would be insufficient as sole storage for any long term scenarios, but it would be very helpful for moves across external storages - the 32GB translate to ~25GB of free space, which should be sufficient for you to move even the largest DD retail titles without the need to re-download them.

I sense an imminent locking in this threads future.

Only if the Wii U remorse thread got locked.

Anyway, I knew for a fact that I would love my Wii U and this hasn't changed. I had a great time for the last fortnight leaving it at my friend's house so we could play NintendoLand every night, as well as some NSMBU, being able to play Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed on the Gamepad is excellent. There's some good games due out in the not-too distant future for it, and I think it's going to bring some good things.

I have been playing a lot of Mass Effect 3 online as of late. Very addicting. If anyone wants to play online with any of the game I have, send me a friend request via miiverse.

I know what you mean but typing City seems so much easier than it is for me to even remember how to spell Asylum

my friendlist is full but have all the same games maybe I'll check and see if someone has stopped playing the Wii U on my list since launch to make room for those who are still playing online

Things I like:
  • Zombi U having that Brit dude talk to you through the pad. Pretty cool.
  • MiiVerse. For someone who doesn't know a lot of people who play video games, this makes me feel pretty connected.
  • Off-screen play is really going to come in handy.
  • It's Nintendo, and that charm oozes throughout the experience.
  • Being able to access the browser mid-play. For a cheater like me, that's really nice.

EDIT: A couple of others include the size and aesthetics of the console, as well as the ability to turn off the TV and the machine from the pad. Seriously, half the time I turn off the 360 I just leave the TV on and let it do its no-signal shutdown. Nice to know I can be a little more, ahem, green.

Things I'm sort of meh about:
  • Loading times aren't nearly as bad as people made out. Have any of you been into the PS3 trophy menu lately? Wii U menus look positively nippy by comparison.
  • Kind of wish I could plug in headphones to the pad and hear all game audio that way. Would have been a Godsend.

Things I don't like:
  • Hard locks. Zombi U locked on me first boot. Now, Arkham City locked on me last night on my PS3. Freezing isn't an issue. The only way to get out of it being unplugging the machine is.
  • Why can I not play NSMBU two-player with the pad and a Wii Remote. That's just... well, a rant well ranted.

More to come, I guess.

From what I understood, the Wii is literally built into the Wii U, so there should be no emulation as far as recreating the original experience on Wii. I don't see why, at the least, there isn't a link to the SD card right from the Wii U menu.

Each VC game had its own emulator designed on a per game basis.

The Wii is not "built into" the Wii U. Iwata said as much.
From what I understood, the Wii U has to emulate the Wii's GPU. So, in order to play any Wii games (VC emulators included), they have to be loaded in the Wii sandbox in order for the U's GPU to understand them.

Once they rewrite each VC emulator to work natively on the U's GPU, maybe we'll get free or discounted upgrades.

didnt know where to ask this but this seems as good as place as any to do it. Anyway i started the last story on my WII U and i just want to know when/if i transfer my wii stuff will that save be ok?

Liking the WII U so far, nintendoland and miiverse are great. load times annoying blah blah.

My library has grown from 1 game to 4 (AC3, Trine 2, ZombieU, NG3RE). So far I'm enjoying the experiences despite the minor hickup during launch day (firmware update, getting stuck at menu loading screen, unoccasional lockouts playing AC3). Everything is running smooth now, but hopefully there's another firmware update down the road to fix the issues like overscan and that HDMI full range color thing.

You're right. I feel like an idiot - I've been posting that same sentiment for a few days now, too. :\ Still, no excuse not to have a link to SD card menu right from the main Wii U menu.

My understanding is that the transfer will overwrite the Wii save data on the WiiU. I'd back your save up on an SD card first.

Maybe they thought the effort would be better suited for the emulator rewrites. I'm hoping so anyway. Why take the times to code it when you're actively working to make it useless once the updates come.

but I may be giving them too much credit...

I'm still waiting for them to offer folders... named preferably.

I'm still waiting for them to offer folders... named preferably.

I'm still waiting for people to go back and adopt the PalmOS category method, which I found far more useful than folders or the stupid "swipe the screen left and right for more stuff!" thing everybody does now. :/

I'm in the middle. Me and my kids love NintendoLand, but i was a bit meh about NSMBU...just same old same old. ZombiU is cool too.

Ive got Black Ops 2 coming tomorrow, any impressions on how well (or not) it runs with the gamepad?

It runs perfectly, and looks great, but it was also the game that made me realize I would pay extra for a deluxe OLED gamepad.
