Mature science fiction anime recommendation

Lain is a mature anime, but it's essentially an experiment in the medium, though in my opinion a competent and effective experiment, but you will probably need to watch it a couple of times to adjust to it. If one of your objections to Evangelion was the poor excuse for philosophy then Lain is a much better example of how to incorporate philosophy into a narrative.

As someone who disliked Evangelion, I agree with this post.

Kids on the Slope..though it isn't sci fi...and really just watch it until episode 7...the second half of the anime isn't bad ...just needed to be fleshed out a bit more...

Is the anime series complete?

Next to none. I'll vouch for Ergo Proxy in that it fits your requirements except that it doesn't take place in an actual nation or real world location.

Awesome. Thanks. I saw a picture with someone who looked kinda gothy so I had to ask!

I've seen Lain. It's cool. My problem with Eva is that I'm not a 13 year old with Oedipal complex and I've come to grips with my sexuality!

I've bothered with Season 2. It was just disappointing against season 1 IMO.

I will say that the Gaiden OVAs were nice, though :p

I enjoyed everything but the ending. If they wanted to troll us with an ending then at least do a season 3. Fuck you BONES.

In any case, it seems that manga is the real season 2 so it's just a matter of time and wishful thinking for it to get animated.

And OP, please watch Fate/Zero. You will thank me later.

Yamato 2199 remake is doing a great job modernizing the original story.

Only avaliable in hyper expensive japanese blu-ray discs, but you can always watch a preview before the america release.

And you have the other classic of space strategy/politic Legend of Galactic Heroes.

Nope, Space Brothers is currently at episode 39 as of this post.

Thanks, I might have to put this on the list for later then. On Ergo Proxy - it starts slow - how many episodes until it gets more interesting?

Yeah I've heard good things. Thanks

there's nothing after Ghost in the Shell SAC and Planetes. sorry.

I really wish they'd do another SAC series. I really need to satiate my existential robot/cyborg fix.

I just realized that I forgot to recommend Toward the Terra. It doesn't really fulfill the additional criteria, though.

Also good reasons for not liking Evangelion.

This. I sat through the entire series during my uni summer break in 2 weeks. Words cannot describe how awesome this anime is, there has yet to be another anime that features grand tactical battles on a scale like LOGH, where the casualties are measured in the millions, and the amount of significant characters so many that each one has to be introduced and re-introduced during their pertinent episode.

Well hello there,

I'm looking for anime recommendations. I'd like it to be geared for a mature audience, not more than 20 or so episodes, preferably "realistic" science fiction, vaguely Shintoistic, somewhat existential, and preferably dealing with real nations/places.

You might hate this show as it's clearly inspired by Evangelion, but have you considered Gasaraki? It's set in the near future, deals with politics (with a fictional country, but still Earth-based anyway), and is steeped heavily in Shinto and Noh. Given what you say about disliking Eva you might not have a problem with Gasaraki, although it is pretty slow and dry.

So it's like The Song of Ice and Fire except in anime form?

What I dislike about Eva is specifically the confused sexuality, and Shinji's whininess. I'll look into it thanks!

Hm, maybe Paranoia Agent. Its this kind of pseudo-sci-fi-fantastical-allegorical examination of the evolution of ideas through a society...sorta. I don't really know how to describe it.

Yeah, while I wouldn't initially consider it sci-fi exactly, it's excellent enough that imo that shouldn't matter

You should read the Planetes manga. When I watched the TV show I was really annoyed at how comparatively immature it was.

This was good too. One of the last anime I ever watched. It's especially good if you're into time travel. However I'm thinking its not really what the OP is looking for. It's still pretty silly and juvenile at times.

I don't know, we're talking about anime standards here. I would definitely put Steins;Gate on the mature side of the spectrum in that context.

Eve no Jikan is another good one too.

Examples of anime I like: Ghost in the Shell SAC and Planetes.
Example of anime I don't like: Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Side question: People hate Dragon Ball Kai? Is it really that bad? I love Dragon Ball and would be interested in re-watching it.

Thanks in advance
I don't have much to add since a lot of people recommended stuff, but I just want to clap really at the bolded. I am glad I am not the only one

Real Drive is what you are looking for if you like Ghost in the Shell, trust me.

Oh man everyone should watch The Big O. Just do it.

Mobile Suit Gundam, wretched children aside, seems more "mature" than its successors (note that I've only really watched Wing and SEED and am working to rectify that.)

And while I don't think it's what you want, I am compelled to recommend Martian Successor Nadesico, too.

I cannot recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes enough, absolutely excellent.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo doesn't really fit into your criteria but it's a very good anime with a sci-fi backdrop.(the sci-fi stuff is really in the background, sometimes I forget it's part sci-fi)

Oh I definitely agree, I'm just not sure what the OP's tolerance is for certain anime tropes and general silliness. I loved it, but it's definitely nowhere near as mature or serious as GITS, Ergo Proxy or some of the other shows mentioned in here.

If you liked Time of Eve, it's worth taking a look at Pale Cocoon. In terms of more action-oriented Sci-Fi, there is Kurozuka. Crest of the Stars, Kaiba, Casshern Sins, and Dennou Coil are also decent and only around 26-episodes.

I'd also recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes, easily the best anime I've seen. Dougram and Votoms are also worth checking out and are more along the lines of realistic sci-fi (to an extent) though both are also longer series.

Legend of Galactic Heroes.
The first 26 episodes are the first part and will suck you in and tell more than so many other series that they are worth it alone.

It's about 50 episodes long but I really liked Armored Trooper Votoms. It might not fit your criteria but is a great series, IMO.

I need to watch Legend of Galactic Heroes one of these days. I love me some space opera.

Steins;Gate

It's a must-watch for any anime fan to begin with. That it happens to fit your criteria is just a bonus. Go now.
I'm ten episodes into this and really enjoying it. Might be too madcap and silly at times for the OP, but I at least like it.

Holy crap they are so reckless with time travel. Don't send shit back 15 years ya idiots!

If you don't mind reading manga instead of watching anime, Hiroki Endo's Eden fits all your criteria. It's phenomenal, one of my all-time favorite comic series Eastern or Western.

I also liked Planetes, Ghost in the Shell (the first season but not the second) and diliked NGE which I stopped watching at some of the first episodes since I got no enjoyment out of it or saw anything particularly compelling or interesting.

Anyway Legend of Galactic Heroes is what I recommend which is my favorite anime among with Monster of all time.

Regarding Planetes from episode 1 to 6 it was average at best and episode 3 ending was a sledgehammer of stupidity assaulting my brain. One of the most stupid and annoying shit I had ever seen. Still there were some parts in the first episodes that showed some promise for something greater which did come and from the begining I liked the believable future premise. From 7 to 17 or something (or maybe 18 not sure) it becomes a great, inspiritational show. Quite good relatively realistic hard sci fi that makes you think about our future. Then the ending of the show has some rather good moments but it is not particularly well written. Overall I was impressed with Planetes.

I very highly recommend Ghost In the Shell film if you have not seen it as unlikely as that might be.

Towards the Terra although does not strictly fit your criteria it does have an initeresting political aspect to it and I also quite enjoyed and would recommend.

Yes you should watch Steins;Gate, it got a very slow start, but once past episode 13 it is one of the best sci-fi anime you ever watch.

Patlabor 1 & 2.

OP should definitely check these out. If you like GitS then you'll most likely enjoy the first Patlabor movie. If you liked GitS 2: Innocence and it's philosophical babble then you'll probably also like Patlabor 2 because they are very similar and, more importantly, made by the same director. Wading through the OVA's and TV series is optional but definitely not necessary viewing beforehand.

You should also check out Memories (a great scifi anthology film), Noiseman Sound Insect, Eternal Family and Mind Game.

I think most of the top tier recommendations have already been made, so I'll suggest titles that are arguably second tier:

Alien Nine
School kids who are drafted/voted by their peers into a school sanctioned club whose members are symbionts/hosts for horrifying aliens. The purpose of the club is to mop up other aliens.

Argentosoma
Mecha action with a gloomy, quiet (and irritating) protagonist in a losing war against a seemingly unstoppable enemy.

Figure 17
On the surface it looks like a Birdy the Mighty clone except with a main character who is a kindergartener or something. Despite the premise this show somehow manages to take itself completely seriously.

Geneshaft
Arguably the heroine isn't mature and doesn't really show much growth, but the premise that humanity is forced to use technology that it doesn't really understand, and has a team of programmers debugging/patching the system in real time; this makes up for a lot of the show's faults.

Yukikaze
A very dark anime about an ace pilot in a war with a mysterious alien enemy that has so successfully infiltrated/sabotaged human forces that the protagonist's paranoid, seemingly sociopathic inability to relate to fellow human beings might make him mankind's last hope.

Glad SEL was recommended.

Technically it's more sci-fi than Texhnolyze is. The latter is... I'm not quite sure how to place it, but it's all over the place. I guess post-apocalyptic better describes Texhnolyze.

Also, Bubblegum Crisis(2032, not the god-awful remake).
