Wii U Satisfaction Thread

GF and I got finished with Mario a few days ago, so much fun once again. I hope they continue with the multiplayer stuff from here on.

Nintendoland is really good when we have other people round, can't seem to find as much fun in lesser numbers though other than the Yoshi game.

Next up we'll be getting back into Sonic racing which we got basically based on the simple fact we could player the career mode co-op. :D Really good.

I got Batman too, looking forward to getting into that soon as I just finished the original on 360 recently.

Miiverse is a killer app to me and I can't wait to play more games that really integrate it like/even more than Mario and NL do.

Edit: Oh yea I also finished Zombi U in one weekend (of hardcore straight play) lol, was that engrossed in it I didn't want to stop. I really like the Wii U and have great hope for the future, MH is prolly the next big big one on my radar.

I bought my Wii U today and I'm impressed with the hardware. I've literally just plugged it in, made a Mii and set it to update while I go to the library though.

I've bought it because I am going to South Korea for 4-5 months and I wanted to take a console but I can't take a TV with me so I will solely be playing games on the gamepads screen.

So a few questions:

Is there a list of games that can be played solely on the gamepads screen?

Can I play Wii games on the gamepads screen? I really just want Xenoblade.

What games should I get that are as good as PS3/360 versions on Wii U? I'm thinking about Fifa or Call of Duty. Is there anything stand out that I should get?

Finally, does anybody know if Monster Hunter specifically will be playable on the gamepads screen? That's THE game that I've got the system for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off_TV_Play#List_of_compatible_games ← shows just retail games
http://www.giantbomb.com/off-tv-play/92-7482/ ← includes Trine 2, which you should be playing right now.

No. When you play Wii games, the system almost literally turns into a Wii, much in the same way that the Wii almost literally turns into a GameCube. In this manner, maximum compatibility is ensured, but it is at the expense of being able to use any new hardware.

This blows especially for Virtual Console games. It kind of sucks that we'll likely (if we're lucky!) first get classic titles on the subscreen only through homebrew emulators.

Trine 2 is superior to the other versions. Get it now.

A quick web search suggests that Monster Hunter uses both screens for different functions and therefore will not support the off-TV feature.

How are Tekken and Sonic Racing on the system? I've owned both on previous consoles so I know how they are as games, so I'm looking for port information.

I can't really decide on either and I'm trading in some games tomorrow.

Might just flag it and put it all down on a pre-order for Lego City.

Sonic Racing runs great and offers a number of additional features (multiplayer modes, 5 player splitscreen/gamepad, off-tv). It's also available relatively cheap at some retailers. Get it!
Tekken is supposed to be a really good port with a lot of additional features, too, but I haven't played it personally.

Today was the first day I've had my Wii U and didn't turn it on. Been busy, so I haven't had the chance. Don't forget about me Miiverse :-(

I've read there is a Zombie U demo now, but I can't find it on the German eshop.

Is this an issue of only being able to download after 11 pm or of them hating the German eshop?

Did anyone download it?

That's the case.
Thank you german fellows.

My own personal experience of Sonic Racing is that the Wii U version is competent and worth investing in. The dual screen vs mode is probably its biggest selling point for me. However, I also own the PS3 version and have found it performs noticeably better in places. I've noticed more frame rate issues on the Wii U version (most obviously on the Afterburner course) than on the Sony console. I've also seen more in the way of glitches on the Wii U one, where chunks of the background vanish for a second or so. The PS3 version looks a sharper to me too when flicking between the AV inputs on my TV.

None of the above points are serious to me and the multiplayer ensures it's the Wii U version that sees the most play time in my house.

This seems to be the thread to ask this question. I'm spinning in circles deciding whether to go for a Wii-U especially as ShopTo have a decent offer on at the moment for the Zombi-U bundle.

£299 for the ZombiU Premium bundle.
- Wii U Console Black
- 32gb Internal Flash Memory
- Wii U GamePad
- Wii U GamePad Stylus
- Wii U GamePad Cradle
- Wii U GamePad Stand
- Wii U Console Stand
- Wii U AC Adapter
- AC Adapter
- Wii U GamePad AC Adapter
- HDMI Cable (1.5m)
- Sensor Bar

- ZombiU Game
- Wii U Pro Controller

Would any of the UK GAF say that's a good deal?

Looks fair. Although if you're not so bothered about the Pro pad, you could go pre-owned at CEX and get that stuff for about £280. Trade in some old stuff at the same time.

I traded a bunch of stuff in and got a Wii U Premium, ZombieU, Fifa 13, and Mario U for £210.

What is up with Wii U VC compatibility?! I went to play some of my VC collection for the first time since transferring, and was told on every instance that they could not be played on "this Wii system". So, painstakingly, I went channel-by-channel and deleted some 60+ games (which took FOREVER) and now I have to re-download all of them one at a time? OMG. SMH Nintendo...

I don't have an original Wiimote and my Wii U says it is needed when I try to go into the Wii section but can I use the Wii U Pro Controller as a controller for some Wii games? I'm thinking specifically about Monster Hunter and Xenoblade which were made for a regular controller too.

What exactly determines which things show up in the Plaza? I play the crap out of Trine 2 (as should you all!), but it doesn't show up. I have little to no interest in Assassin's Creed, but that game is there. Does it just show the 5 or 6 most popular communities without respect to the particular user? It'd be really neat if I could just jump right to my favourite communities from there.

Yep, you need a Wiimote to go into Wii Mode. The U Pro Controller, is only for Wii U games that support it. And for those games, you'll need a Wii Classic Controller if you want to play with a more traditional controller.

There's also the Retro Controller for Wii U, which is nice and is $10 cheaper than the U Pro; but it only works as a substitute for the Wii Remote/Classic Controller.
So, while you can't use it as a Wii U Pro Controller per se; you can use it for Wii U games that use either the Wii Remote only or the Classic Controller like New Super Mario Bros. U or Nintendoland multi; or in Wii Mode to play Wii Remote/Classic games (it also has an IR; so you can use it as apointer).

That's a pretty decent deal.

I got a Premium & NSMBU for €436 in Argos here in Ireland last week, that's ~£350 which I guess was the going rate around launch.

Ive been loving my Wii U also. I think I played AC3 yesterday for 8 hours straight. At first I thought the game was really bad when you start playing with the first character but when you progress to Conner the game really opens up. I dunno how the Wii U version compares to PS360 versions but I find the Wii U version beautiful!!!

I played ZombiU for the first time last night. I found it to be scary as hell and perfectly illustrates the power of the gamepad for more hardcore-styled games. It's something everyone needs to at least try once to see how you can integrate the gamepad into what's become the preferred perspective for a lot of modern "hardcore" gamers (first-person).

I really liked that it's hard as nails to stay alive too. I think I was on my fourth dude by the time I stopped. Very cool... frightening and gruesome with a nice touch of mystery. UbiSoft can be there at launch anytime. They get it.

I can't Believe how much I'm enjoying BLOPS 2 on this thing.

Superior version confirmed.

Toilet COD = Best COD.

+Yeah!

Best use of the pad for sure.

Man Ive been having fun with it. Sonic Racing, Mario and Nintendoland are really fun and I'll gonna pick up Tekken and Assasin Creed 3 later in the year. My sisters love playing Just Dance with it.

Hope Nintendo has Mario Kart for their Christmas game this year.

What about the new WiiMotes that were released alongside the Wii U? Do they work with old Wii games?

My girlfriend's home office is pretty much in our living room, and she had to work late last night so I left her alone to do her thing. Turns out playing Assassin's Creed III in bed is pretty awesome.

I'm loving the Zombi U demo

So much has been said about the combat but I really liked it

I just wished they gave the option to use the dpad to change weapons and stuff - bad miss on ubi's part

I guess the only thing I'm unsatisfied with at the moment when I really think about it is the lack of a true RPG. Something that won't be there for a long time. I still have Xenoblade and The Last Story I could replay but still. Something new in this space on the console would be good. I guess I could put the system to the side for a while and pick up a cheap copy of either Dragon's Dogma or Kingdom's of Amalur on the PS3 to fill the void. I don't count Mass Effect 3 because that's a shooter. The wait for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is going to be long.

I do find myself just opening up Miiverse and just browsing it some days instead of playing anything while I do something on my computer. Also been using TVii a lot as well.

I bought Madden 13 on the eShop yesterday (had tons of credit and unfortunately there ain't much on there to spend it on)...

Pretty good, gameplay seems a tad choppy, but it's cool.

Kind of disappointing that you can't switch to gamepad only during a game and since you can't save mid-game and return it kind of kills the whole flexibility...

Okay, so I'm just gonna use this thread to give my almost-2-month-post-hype impressions of the system. I've had one since launch, and luckily haven't have hardware issues; maybe 2 hard locks but that's about it.

So things I like:

+ The user-interface is clean, and I like seeing random other posts on the Miiverse when I load up. The whole Miiverse is also overall very clean, and while the censorship results in this weird family-friendly 1950's Americana "gee-whilikers"-esque sentimentality, it's refreshing compared to the homophobic/racist cultures on some other online services.
+ Netflix/Hulu functionality. It's basically become my go-to for these services. I do wish that you could use the web browser while on Netflix... hitting the Home button stops everything in its tracks.
+ Games: Some pleasant surprises. I really enjoyed ZombiU, and was really what I was looking for in a Survival Horror game. NG3:RE is better than I expected (skipped out on 2, and haven't played a NG since Black.) BOPS2 is basically what I expected, but I like that I'm actually pretty good compared to the other players. Nintendoland is fun with a group of people.
+ Off-screen functionality: I still think this is the "gimmicky" part of the 2 screen thing. I mean, isn't the whole POINT of having two screens that you can utilize them and NOT cram everything in? That being said, for a game where that standard's already set like BOPS 2, it's a neat little feature.

Now my long list of grievances:

- Load times. It's been beat over the head, but considering how Nintendo was obsessed in the last few generations about maintaining low load times it's laughably ironic that the GUI takes a substantial amount of time starting up, loading an app, hitting home, closing an app, etc.
- The overall interface looks sleak, but things that should JUST work often don't. Hiting the HOME button at ANY time should bring up the home screen. Period. But some games simply don't let you do so during cutscenes or MENUS (BLOPS 2, I'm looking at you.) Furthermore in something like TVii, hitting the home button, then hitting it again to close out the home screen closes out TVii and you have to load it again. It's extraordinarilly frustrating and makes me not want to use the service.
- Speaking of TVii, I like the concept. A lot. I want it to work, but again... it needs to be MUCH faster starting up, and needs to be much more streamlined. Right now, the search function is pretty limited; and hit or miss. They need netflix support and other services like HBOGo.
- Wii functionality. I'm grateful for the backwards compatibility, but they literally just created a Wii inside the Wii U. Even if you go to the Wii Shop and download VC games, you still have LIMITED BLOCKS and may need to resort to using an SD card. Really? You have 8-32 Gb built in and the system's still reading it as 512 mb or whatever the Wii had. Speaking of that:
- VC function. Yeah it's been said but this needs to work natively on the Wii U. I'm hoping that if they get the VC store on the Wii U working, that they'll simply allow us to download our previous catalog of games from our old accounts. I'm not holding my breath though.

Lastly, here's my thoughts going forward on the system.

I dig the system. I really do, but I would have to say I'm worried and there's multiple kinks that need to be ironed out, and I'm not sure if Nintendo is really going to do so, mainly because what they have in place is "good enough."

Similarly, I'm a little fuzzy on the outlook of things from a game standpoint. Right now, the announced games I'm looking forward to are Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, and Pikmin 3. Maybe MH3U. For me, the system was more of a good faith system, knowing that I was gonna buy Smash Bros., next 3d Mario, Zelda and Mario Kart anyways.

Having said that, I just have this feeling that Nintendo is having more trouble adjusting to the HD era-type games then they're letting on. Of the 1st party games we've seen, NSMBU is very pretty but still a 2D game with 2D assets, Wii U Fit is an HD upgraded version of the Wii version, Pikmin 3 is pretty but started its life and much of its gestation as a Wii game, and Nintendoland while a better game then it'd have you let on still has the whole "simple but deep" mentality, with varying stylized graphical fidelity. I think there's a reason why Nintendo is publishing a bunch of 3rd party games like NG3RE, the Platinum games, and teaming up with Namco for Smash Bros. I don't know, maybe it's just paranoia based on Nintendo's ninjas and secretive ways, but I feel like with the info that we know, this time it's a little different.

I've said it before but I think Nintendo's best bet this generation is become a safe-haven for the little to middle sized publishers, especially the Japanese ones. Once Durango and Orbis come out, there's no doubt that the high budget Elder Scrolls, Bioshocks and GTAs of the world will be developed as the primary system. Wii U could and should be the system that companies like Platinum, Atlus, Mistwalker, Grasshopper or somebody like Itagaki could feel comfortable making a somewhat risky game for wth Nintendo's backing, without the fear that it'll ruin them and cause them to go under.

Anyhow, all of this is speculation, and again, it might sound like I'm down on the system, but I do actually like it. I just think there's stuff that needs to be worked out and I have some concerns for the future. Maybe I'm wrong though. Maybe Nintendo blows the lid open at E3 and shows the most amazing looking Metroid and Mario games, a brand new Retro-made IP, and Monolithsoft remaking FF7 with Square or something. Regardless, my journey in the Nintendo-cycle continues I guess.

Ok so I just impulse bought the Wii U. I was able to score the basic white version which is fine by me. I love the system so far and I love Zombi U and NSMB on it. I have one question, can anyone recommend me a good External HDD for this bad boy because I plan to buy a bunch of digital games for it?

I think that this was a design choice. It's easier to press a d-pad to switch weapons than look at the screen to change them. This game is about creating tension and making things harder for the gamer, so not using the d-pad makes sense to me.

Tekken is a good port. Runs smoothly and has all the features plus bonus content

I'm already pleased to see Nyko coming through with an internal battery which will triple the longevity of the gamepad when you charge it (9 to 12 hours). :] It's a small step in the right direction, but it's still significant for me and I'm buying one for sure.

There's a whole thread on Wii U & external HDD here.

The big consideration for external HDDs on Wii U is the power supply. USB powered HDDs will usually require a Y-cable (like this USB 3.0 cable), since one USB port doesn't provide enough power. External HDDs that have their own power adapters will work just fine with one USB port.

I just bought an external enclosure for an extra internal drive I happened to have. Only thing you really need to know is that (A) it's probably best if it's a drive that can drive its own power, (B) if it's USB 3.0 without a power port you need one of them USB "Y" cables .

There needs to be a way to customize Miiverse so communities you want or favorite show up on top when you open it up. Right now there seems to be little rhyme or reason to how the communities are listed (I have Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune at the top of mine). I know you can see communities you favorite from the User Menu but it should be more up front.

I agree, but just in case, you do know that you can access a list of your favourite communities from your profile, right? ← ignore this, I never learned to read

As I said earlier today, what I'd prefer is if the user's most frequently played games show up on the Plaza in the Wii U Menu. Instead of shitty games/apps that the player has no interest in. :|

I'm really happy with my Wii U so far. Nintendoland and Super Mario Bros U have blown away my expectations, the controler is great, the Miiverse is awesome. Nintendo games won't look fugly on my HD TV any more. I'm pretty happy. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone though, it's still too expensive for what it is, and I'm concerned about future third party support (ie Crysis 3 and Castlevania Lord of Shadows 2 comments on eventual Wii U versions of their games), but if you love Nintendo IPs like I do, it's a very good console. I need to buy and play ZombiU next.

Well, it's clear that with the New Super Mario Bros games, Nintendo intended to invest low resources into each game and recycle assets too. Nintendo's nose must have bled when it saw these games on the DS And Wii skyrocket to 20+ million copies each. Anyway, Satoru Iwata sort of hinted about its handling of cheap and rich graphical offerings on on Wii U:

Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop. It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion. When you look at Nintendo’s software, extraordinary rich graphics, massive gameplay volume and astonishing rendition effects are not necessarily the appealing point. It is, in fact, important for us that our games are appealing in other ways as well. An example of this is the Wii software, ‘RHYTHM HEAVEN FEVER,’ that we released last year in Japan. It became one of the hits, but if we had adopted rich photo-realistic graphics, it would have lost much of its appeal rather than improving its appeal. Similarly, about the Japanese title ‘Tomodachi Collection’ for Nintendo DS, the developers themselves confirmed that this software is based upon the “cheap concept.”

It is not necessary for us to deploy a huge number of people in order to develop such games. When we need massive power and have a lack of internal resources, we collaborate with outside resources and pour necessary resources to where they are needed. We are increasing the frequency of working with outside developers where Mr. Miyamoto and our internal developers alone used to develop. At the same time, however, we do not forget to ask ourselves in each such opportunity, ‘Isn’t this something our internal resources alone could sufficiently deal with?’ Also, when we have such a doubt in the development as, ‘Will such cheap pictures do in terms of today’s home console graphics’ standard?,’ sometimes we conclude that ‘showing such pictures are unique and rather appealing, so it’s OK.’

As far as publishing third-party projects go, Nintendo knew it couldn't provide sufficient software support on its own, so it felt compelled to work with third-parties to get a combination of ports and original IPs released early on. Nintendo couldn't afford to take the risk of repeating the mistakes it made with lackluster launch software on the 3DS. It would seem that Nintendo intends to be more supportive of publishing third party projects on Wii U. Hopefully, Nintendo's not just soley relying on these partnerships in order to make up for its own lack of software support for 2013.

The situation with Smash Bros being developed by Namco Bandai isn't surprising given how Smash Bros Brawl was handled by Game Arts as the main development team with assitance from developers like Monolith Soft and Paon. Hal Labs doesn't seem to have any direct involvement in making the games anymore. Hal merely provided assests to Smash Bros Melee for Sakurai and his team to have access to. In fact, the reason Iwata prematurely announced both Smash Bros games at E3 2005 and 2006, is because they wanted to start searching for a third-party developer to work with Sakurai. Of course, Sakurai didn't actually know Iwata was going to ask him to serve as director to Smash Bros Brawl until the game was announced. After that, Iwata convinced Sakurai to do it.

I like the WiiU and wish that there were more digital downloads available. Been tempted to impulse Blops2, but i really don't want the disc.

The only thing that I HATE HATE HATE about the system is the frequent freezing. Watch anything on Netflix or Amazon for me and it will freeze EVERY TIME.

And what's really crazy is that neither the power button on the gamepad, nor the console, will turn the system off. One MUST unplug the live system, which goes against every gamer/electronic instinct in me.

Nintendo needs to fix this ASAP. They can work on increasing the download speeds (it shouldn't take 8 hours to download Darksiders II when a game of equal size takes me maybe an hour an a half on XBL), they can fix other aspects in the near future.

The freezing bug has to GO.

Oh, and they need to simplify the whole adding friends thing. It shouldn't take 4 grown adults in my office to figure out between us that the only way to add friends to the list is to do it in two separate menus. One buried in MiiVerse, and the other on home screen.

The system's a keeper, but the bugs aren't minor.

Yeah I agree that the "reaching out to 3rd party" thing was Nintendo's intention but it's been their intention since the post-N64/GC era. It definitely seems for every step forward with 3rd party collaborations there's at least a step (if not two) back with other companies... but that's really a discussion for another time. I really do hope like you do that the 3rd party collaborations aren't because of a dearth of productivity on the internal development side.

And while it's not surprising that Sakurai and whatever remains of HAL decided to seek help with another development company, I think it's a bit more striking considering Namco Bandai is still a sizeable developer/publisher, especially compared to Game Arts or Monolithsoft. To me, this struck less of the Brawl: GameArts/Monolithsoft "you guys aren't busy, help develop this" deal and more of an F-Zero GX or Star Fox Assault scenario
