how does Amazon Payments work? If they have $10 million Amazon bucks, how do they shop for components?
The Verge posted their hands on: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/9/3854570/pebble-smartwatch-keeps-it-simple-hands-on
Isn't having a watch always connected to your phone via bluetooth going to be a large battery hog?
Without any further ado, the moment you have all been waiting for has arrived were thrilled to announce that well begin shipping Pebble on January 23rd. Weve been working very hard for the past year to deliver something that were truly proud of...and we know that we would not have been able to do it without the support of our Backers. So thank you!
Also, as many of you have speculated, we can confirm that Pebble uses a magnetic charging cable. This was done to help achieve a 5ATM water resistance rating, perfect for running in the rain, skiing, swimming and washing dishes! And one last fun and useful tool the accelerometer weve built into the watch allows you simply to tap or flick your wrist to turn on the backlight.
In addition to previously mentioned features, your Pebble will include the following sensors that we'll enable with future updates:
· Magnetometer - weve added this in so youll have compass-like functionality
· Ambient light sensors - your Pebble watch will be able to understand how much light is available in its current environment

I'm willing to bet someone that these smartwatches won't be any more popular than Nike+ sneakers.
I agree - they will be popular among an enthusiast market. But they won't go near the level of popularity smartphones enjoy, for example, like some are implying. Like I can ask pretty much anyone on this forum which smartphone they like, but very few will be able to tell me about Nike+ sneakers.... which are actually quite popular? Every runner I know has that Nike+ fob in their shoe.
This looks pretty interesting. Only thing I am concerned about is how fragile e-ink displays are.
so if I'm wearing my pebble and its connected to my iPhone via bluetooth. I go into my car which also connects to the phone via bluetooth. what happens? will they both work? do we not know?
It might not have all the bells and whistles of the Pebble but I'm liking Casio's G-Shock bluetooth smartwatches a little more...they just used their familiar classic silhouettes/molds and added smartwatch functions to it.
Casio G-Shock GB-5600AA and GB-6900AA

It's also nice that these watches can last at least TWO YEARS on a standard CR2032 watch battery as well =)
Edit: Yes I'm kinda biased towards G-Shocks lol =P
Verge has their review up.
Sounds like I should be glad I held out and decided to wait for v2, when and if that happens.
Seems functional, but it's first gen and it looks easier to just pull out your phone than mess with the pebble watch; especially since iOS loses your settings if you lose connection.
But once youre used to having notifications on your wrist, its hard to live without them.
Love the idea behind those new G-Shocks, but they lack features you'd expect like solar charging and radio controlled time. Worse still they don't support SMS alerts, only calls and emails, and only iPhone not Android. Those two can probably be fixed with app updates and an Android app, but still. It might not have all the bells and whistles of the Pebble but I'm liking Casio's G-Shock bluetooth smartwatches a little more...they just used their familiar classic silhouettes/molds and added smartwatch functions to it.

I believe the G-Shocks sync with mobile phone time...so in this case Casio's 'Multi Band 6' radio function is really not necessary.Love the idea behind those new G-Shocks, but they lack features you'd expect like solar charging and radio controlled time. My current watch isn't G-Shock but it's a decent Casio which has lasted me 5+ years. The solar charging means I've never changed the battery, even in the UK where it's mostly cloudy, and the watch remains covered by my sleeve most of the day. And I'm real picky about having accurate time. If they do a G-Shock with those features, SMS alerts and Android support, I'll pay good money for it.
