Pebble just announced that the watches are in mass production, and are beginning to ship on January 23rd.

Mass produced at 15k Pebbles per week. 6-8 weeks to ship to all Kickstarter backers. After that, shipping to pre-orders.

UPDATE: Water Resistant to 5ATM. Good for running in rain, swimming, etc.

Smurfs made Pebble?

Apparently

Saw a colleague wearing a Sony smartwatch today. It looked quite spiffy. With the e-ink screen the pebble does seem to look a bit (too) understated.

Wish I had kicktstarted this when it was available, but I really like the idea of this watch. Hopefully I'll be able to get one...

vibrates for text messages, im going to have to get me one, now im going to have phantom vibrates on my wrist

Isn't having a watch always connected to your phone via bluetooth going to be a large battery hog?

Yes, kind of. But Pebble supports Bluetooth 4.0 which is supposed use less power. Also, I usually have my BT headset connected to my phone the whole day and I'm fine.

Woot!

Without any further ado, the moment you have all been waiting for has arrived – we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll begin shipping Pebble on January 23rd. We’ve been working very hard for the past year to deliver something that we’re truly proud of...and we know that we would not have been able to do it without the support of our Backers. So thank you!

Magnetic charging too for waterproof reasons.

Also, as many of you have speculated, we can confirm that Pebble uses a magnetic charging cable. This was done to help achieve a 5ATM water resistance rating, perfect for running in the rain, skiing, swimming and washing dishes! And one last fun and useful tool – the accelerometer we’ve built into the watch allows you simply to tap or flick your wrist to turn on the backlight.

And other features coming soon.

In addition to previously mentioned features, your Pebble will include the following sensors that we'll enable with future updates:

· Magnetometer - we’ve added this in so you’ll have compass-like functionality

· Ambient light sensors - your Pebble watch will be able to understand how much light is available in its current environment

... which are actually quite popular? Every runner I know has that Nike+ fob in their shoe.
I agree - they will be popular among an enthusiast market. But they won't go near the level of popularity smartphones enjoy, for example, like some are implying. Like I can ask pretty much anyone on this forum which smartphone they like, but very few will be able to tell me about Nike+ sneakers.

This looks pretty interesting. Only thing I am concerned about is how fragile e-ink displays are.

Common misconception. It's epaper, not eink. The difference is that epaper is a custom black and white LCD designed to work in direct sunlight with low power consumption. You still get a decent frame rate for animations and transitions(30fps).

so if I'm wearing my pebble and its connected to my iPhone via bluetooth. I go into my car which also connects to the phone via bluetooth. what happens? will they both work? do we not know?

We do not know. I was hoping someone would ask that during the presentation.

Multiple devices can definately be connected at once, so in theory it should work.

It might not have all the bells and whistles of the Pebble but I'm liking Casio's G-Shock bluetooth smartwatches a little more...they just used their familiar classic silhouettes/molds and added smartwatch functions to it.

Casio G-Shock GB-5600AA and GB-6900AA

It's also nice that these watches can last at least TWO YEARS on a standard CR2032 watch battery as well =)

Edit: Yes I'm kinda biased towards G-Shocks lol =P

I agree with this, but I'm the rare person who doesn't think the Pebble looks cool. I'd rather have a normal G-Shock with notifications.

Sounds like I should be glad I held out and decided to wait for v2, when and if that happens.

Yeah, I'm still leaning on waiting for v2.

Seems functional, but it's first gen and it looks easier to just pull out your phone than mess with the pebble watch; especially since iOS loses your settings if you lose connection.

From the review:

But once you’re used to having notifications on your wrist, it’s hard to live without them.

But from the sounds of it, the Android experience is slightly better at this time. Just needs the app support, and I think it will be a great little device. I'm worried about the battery draining this will do though.

Love the idea behind those new G-Shocks, but they lack features you'd expect like solar charging and radio controlled time. Worse still they don't support SMS alerts, only calls and emails, and only iPhone not Android. Those two can probably be fixed with app updates and an Android app, but still.

My current watch isn't G-Shock but it's a decent Casio which has lasted me 5+ years. The solar charging means I've never changed the battery, even in the UK where it's mostly cloudy, and the watch remains covered by my sleeve most of the day. And I'm real picky about having accurate time. If they do a G-Shock with those features, SMS alerts and Android support, I'll pay good money for it.

I believe the G-Shocks sync with mobile phone time...so in this case Casio's 'Multi Band 6' radio function is really not necessary.

That said, I'm quite spoiled by 'Multi Band'...I can't get a G-Shock without one nowadays. I rarely wear my older G-Shocks that don't have it since I have to manually re-sync them often before I use them.

But yeah, SMS notification would definitely be a nice feature.
