Hideki Kamiya shits all over Kotaku

kotaku has a point. japanese developers have no reason not to support steam. they either don't put their games there or often have half assed ports with gfwl or very little graphics options or something equally ridiculous, and that does give the impression that they are clueless

although i didn't read the article, so i have no idea what it said besides the headline

These developers in Japan have very little experience with working with PC games. That's probably why their ports are sometimes not very good. There is very little reason for developers who don't port their games to the PC to change and do so as the Japan PC market is too small to justify the porting. Should they (the Japanese developers) try to make the PC market bigger in both Japan and overseas? Perhaps it would be good to try. But Kotaku did not try to find out why Japanese developers don't try to enter the PC gaming market. They could have done a lot more, like say interview some developers to ask them why.

Someone posted this earlier.
http://gamasutra.com/view/news/177991/Steam_Japan_and_missed_opportunities.php#.UOzn-m_Adhx

It provides a viewpoint of one developer as to why they don't try for more Steam games. This should have been done instead of what Kotaku did.

EDIT:

bullshit. you're the one who has no idea what you're saying. the whole point of steam is that the games sell GLOBALLY

if they want to sell their games in japan, they already have 2 or 3 systems to do that

either way, it's their loss. if they don't want to support steam and sell their games, they can continue trying to appeal to shrinking markets instead

Many of these Japanese companies are small. Beyond the usual big players like SE, Capcom, Sega, Konami (and some of these already have games on Steam), many developers in Japan do not have the resources to port their games to the PC. Some can't even afford to localise their games for the western markets with their existing console and handheld games. The PC market is a huge risk that few can take. It doesn't help that game development is slowly being shifted towards the handhelds. We're talking about companies who have trouble (either because of technical skills or resources) developing console games and porting games to the PC will just take more toil.

I saw the story on kotaku yesterday and based on the headline I didn't read it. I was LOL'ing at the twitter responses to it, great stuff.

Most Japanese developers make games for the Japanese domestic market first and foremost. These games are then localized and released in other territories. The Japanese PC gaming market is very small and very niche. This is why there aren't a whole lot of games released for the platform outside of "adult" anime games, foreign games with some degree of translation, and Japanese games that were created for the global market (like Capcom stuff). Generally, PC versions of games simply aren't made. It would take a motivated global or overseas publisher to get a Japanese developer to make a PC game simply for the international market. This is what happened with Dark Souls (although the PC version also got a limited Japanese release).

Also, while you say the point of Steam is to sell things globally, that's often not how publishers play. Many of the bigger publishers will prevent sales of their Steam games to certain regions, or adjust the pricing to a ridiculous degree (hi, Australia). Then you have other nonsense like different release dates based on territory. While Japan is more fortunate than some regions, there is still a lot of Steam content that isn't available for purchase from Japanese IPs.

Furthermore, the Japanese Steam support isn't particularly good. I'm not sure if this is Valve's fault for not taking more of an initiative or what, but there are some weird translations in there.

I'm primarily a PC gamer. I'd love nothing more than to have all of my favorite Japanese games on the platform. But it just doesn't make sense for most developers and publishers, with limited knowledge of overseas markets, to make PC versions of their games almost exclusively for foreign markets.

I'm not offended by what he says, but I do think the way he conducts himself on twitter isn't all that good. I'm a bit perplexed by the adoration he gets from Gaffers when he says stupid stuff. You guys are like.. boy band fans or something. All giggly and jacked up on fizzy lemonade!

I think it is also unfair to say that Japanese companies are not trying to get their games onto the PC gaming market. Some of the larger companies have been trying to port more games. Capcom does have quite a few of their Japanese titles on Steam. They also have some doujin games in English on Steam as well. So does Sega with their Sonic games. SE has been doing a good job with their Eidos games in terms of distribution. And Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution were not gimped by consoles and looked fantastic on the PC because they made sure that they didn't half-ass their ports. Smaller companies like Marvelous (who release 30 Second Hero on Steam) and Falcom (who is trying to work with Xseed in bringing their titles to the Western markets) are also making attempts. Platinum Games had Inaba, their exective director, visit Valve personally. He has expressed interest on releasing games for Steam. Which is the most ironic part of this whole affair because if Kotaku could have done a simple check and invalidate the article's claims and direction even before it was written.

Kamiya is a moron, and a douchebag. Yes he makes good games, but he is seriously an arrogant prick. Why do you guys accept this so happily?

If he is those things, I except it happily because we would not have Platinum Games without him.
I mean, an arrogant prick I don't know is being a prick to other arrogant pricks I don't know. Same as it ever was.

From what I've heard and read the network infrastructure in Japan is already pretty good. A report from 2008 says at least that 35% of the infrastructure in Japan is already fiber optic, which is spectacular given what options I have here in the bay area. I'm assuming this number has grown over time, so I would think DD is becoming a more convenient option in Japan. In particular, at least one report from late last year points out that Japan has overtaken the US in Google Play revenue, so I would think the Japanese are becoming more and more acclimated to doing some things (such as downloading software) over the internet.

So does anyone from Japan have any personal experience with online PC gaming that they'd like to share? Usually when I download a patch for DOTA 2, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, with some finangaling if the connection drops to 0 MB/s every once in awhile. Playing together with my brother is mostly smooth, but not always, and the moment someone decides to stream anything while we are both playing, we are likely to get disconnected and stay throttled for awhile after. It really sucks :( I've heard online PC gaming isn't that big in Japan to begin with, but for those that have tried how is it? This isn't necessarily just about Steam, I guess Origin might be interesting to consider too if they've given any kind of support there.

Does any have any more articles regarding Steam in Japan outside of the Kotaku article? Here are some I've found when I was grazing through the thread earlier:

Most other articles I find about Steam pretty much route back to Marvelous AQL and how they want to concentrate more on Steam, so perhaps my google fu could use some brushing up :X

And are there any Japanese steam games that seem to be doing well or would be recommended? I remember my brother spending a lot of time on Recettear, which seemed like a fun RPG that puts you in the position as both a shopkeeper and as a dungeon crawler. I remember there being quite a lot of fanfare for that game as well when it came out.

Ah yeah, that's right! I've watched a friend play Sonic Generations on his PC via Steam. It looked pretty cool :3 I don't think he was using the keyboard though, most likely he was playing it with the 360 game controller.

Essentially, this.

i'm sorry i don't keep up with all the developers who once manifested their intents of having their games on steam, air zombie. i hope you'll someday forgive me for my sins

Japanese market didn't shrink nearly as much as the western market did in 2012!

i could be wrong about this, but i think outside of nintendo's games, japanese sales have generally gotten a lot worse over the last couple of years

also, it's debatable whether the western market has shrunk or not. first, because digital sales aren't tracked, and they just keep on increasing. second, because steam has improved sales dramatically in other markets (mostly in europe and south america).

you'd have a better point if you said the market in north america has shrunk more. it might have, though there's no way to know for sure

How is he enjoying all those American inventions? IQ tests are BS is what I am trying to say.

To a small degree you are right. To a larger extent, iQ testing done professionally, isn't BS. Don't believe me? Next time you need neurosurgery request a doctor with an IQ of 70 or lower. Try even 100 or lower. I'll bet the results won't be pretty. Just Saying... ;)

Two big reasons for that:

1. He makes games a lot of GAFfers like
2. He says things other game developers usually don't say, so it makes it more special

Personally, if he and Itagaki were to meet, I don't think there would be a room big enough for their egos.

Its a mixture of finding him funny and the fact that I like watching assholes get called assholes. Its something that I think people should do more, because I think there isnt enough accountability for how people act these days, and I think that a huge reason people continue to be assholes is because they dont get called out for what they do or say.

If people were walking up to me all day telling me how I should do my job and making articles that misrepresent what I say
I'd want to call them out on being assholes. Im glad he has the balls to call out people who deserve it. Its not like hes walking around asking random people if they eat shit, he said it as a rebuttal to an asshole who did something that was insulting and rude.

that doesn't ..answer..his question..but hey you showed you're not a clone or sheep, an individual through and through with shoddy reading comprehension skills to boot! Yay you!

Don't encourage him, he might rub two brain cells together then explode from activity overload. :P

Hating the haters is truly pathetic though, especially one who cannot articulate his hate.

Why are we insulting fellow posters for thinking Kamiya is amusing? People appreciate his demeanor on twitter. You might not, but don't make it sound like no one does and thus must have ulterior motives.

The only thing that's amusing to me is how pathetic it is that people are fawning over this guy for his shitty 3rd grade level insults and comebacks, all because he made their favorite game.

Kotaku gets a lot of hits by treating Japan like some weird out of date fish tank. It's not just the culture posts, which are legendary in their inanity, but dumb crap like this. I'm glad they got called out for once.

Kamiya has perfected refuge in audacity. It's why he's so amusing that I don't really get upset or offended by what he posts. I also learn not to ask him about DmC, Bayonetta x DMC fanfiction, things best directed at SEGA, Capcom, or Nintendo, or any of that crap.

Adult-GAF is in da house

I never though I might say this, but seems like there are actually people who don't get Kamiya - carry on

Summary of events: Kotaku twists a twitter post from Kamiya to write a sensationalist article, describing him as clueless about Valve and PC gaming, smearing all of Platinum in the process. Nevermind that Inaba, head of PG, had visited Valve recently. Kamiya finds out and goes to town.
