Lance Armstrong plans to admit doping to Oprah (USA Today)

I really wanted to come in here and say something along a "How on earth did you miss this sticky that's been up there for weeks?" line, so I am.

Yep I did miss that lol (work is a bitch, I speed read threads!!!)

I really just worded that poorly.

I had this whole thing typed out and when I read it back to myself I realized I am not well informed on all the details enough to even justify what I was saying so I cropped it all out and made my post.

Suffice it to say I really don't give a crap about this guy. He got caught and banned, and stripped of medals, and whatever else yet we are STILL stressing about it (in the media) even though there are TONS of other athletes who cheated their entire careers.

Like I said though, I do not know half the stuff you guys are posting about, all this evidence and testimony and dirty play etc.... so I am am officially under-qualifying myself to comment further in this thread ;P

Couldn't he kinda like...go to jail for this? I thought there was a perjury investigation going on.

Two predictions:

1. There will be some variation of "everyone was doing it, I felt I had to to keep up"

2. There will be no mention of how he was willing to use all the massive resources availalbe to him to attack and slander his 'enemies' (such as Betsy Andreu). Which, IMO, is far worse than the cheating itself.

He testified under oath once if I recall correctly, when he was sued by SCA promotions, but that was in 2006, so the statute of limitations has passed by now.

Make the punishment harsher. Lance lost some titles. He kept the money. Take the money back, all of it. And if they can't afford it, fine them and make them pay it back over their while life.

Y'know I was thinking this when reading that it would take place at his home. I picture him with a smug smile like "yeah... my wall of trophies is missing, but look at this bomb ass house I have".

Well, that's exactly what he was doing back in November after the USADA reports were published...

I get the distinct feeling that the guy only agreed to this interview because he believes he is smarter than every one of the viewers who will be tuning in. If Oprah did the miraculous thing and grilled him hard (which would probably require an epic bait-and-switch on her part), I bet he would lose his shit and show the world just what a nasty individual he is.

At least, that's what I'm hoping for.

I think the movie "Breaking Away" explained it all to us. Even those supposed idealistic achievers are ASSHOLES.

Especially when referring to keuja's post above.

I imagine the questions were sent to Armstrong and his lawyers/marketers in advance for approval.

Can we finally admit that Lemond was the greatest American cyclist now?

Amazing how well regarded Livestrong is, when it basically is a 'charity' that does PR for Armstrong.

He was the best Tour rider for sure. The USA has had some rising stars these past years. The Phinney lineage is great, Kristin Armstrong is an excellent TT racer, and Tejay van Garderen is on his way to crushing LeMond's legacy. Hincapie was a true rough rider for all the years that he lasted (although he is a known doper).

Oh, and Timmy Duggan and Joe Dombrowski are some americans to watch.

err.. what I'm trying to say is Armstrong is overrated no matter what, and cycling is bigger than the tour. but you know that, and i hope this doesn't come off as a lecture so much as a "hey, cycling is cool, pay attention to these americans all you jerks who don't follow the sport"

I can't even enter into the mindset of people who defend drug cheats. I mean, I don't understand a single one of their arguments. Even though as a society we've decided that "Well everyone was doing it!" isn't a reasonable defence for bad behaviour, people use that as an defence for Armstrong (often ignoring the fact he was doing it much worse than anyone else along with the whole intimidation stuff that went on).

Obviously drug cheating isn't confined to America, but I feel like the American sport culture as a whole is no where near as tough on drug cheats as they should be. I can't believe how lax the penalties are in the major sports. Get caught using steroids in the MLB and you only get a 50 game suspension. That's less than a third of the season! Make that two years, minimum.

And then you get the people who say it should all be legal anyway. It takes about 5 minutes of thought to realise what a horrible, horrible idea that is.

It might be that the defenders pity them. For example, I pity professional football players because even though they live a much more lavish lifestyle than I do, their entire life hinges on whether or not they can run fast enough, jump high enough, take the hit, and still deliver a victory. They destroy their bodies for a few years for a few million dollars, which can easily be bogarted by their agents and managers. And then they're going to sit in their Malibu homes with brain damage and shot knees. They know this and so does the public. So I pity them and understand their need to take performance enhancing drugs to try and stay ahead of the curve.

Armstrong is a douche, though. I just recently read and watched interviews with him and about him to realize how egotesticle (ha) he is. On the other hand, he had a cameo appearance in Dodgeball, he's made a lot of endorsements, has had a lot of good public image for his cancer foundation work, and many people don't want to believe that he's a cheater, and many who accept he's a cheater want to say, "So what? Everybody does it. Look at how much good he's done."

Oh Lord do I ever hope Oprah does this. She has on occasion and this would be another glorious time.

Oprah's couch has been a springboard for various confessions and personal discoveries.

I wonder how many offers for a book deal Lance will get to "tell his story"?

or, just make everyone a drug cheat. make it law that you must be on drugs to compete.

I mean, lance armstrong beat cancer twice.... give all cancer patients that stuff and make them ride up hills all day.

It still would require strenuous testing to ensure all cyclists were on the same drug regimens, doping up to the same hematocrit levels, etc. All the endorsement money that Armstrong got and the lengths he went to hide everything, shows how much people are willing to go to dope better than others, and ensure your teammates doped better than others, paying hundreds of thousands (maybe even millions) to secure the best doctors with the best drugs and doping methods that aren't used by other cyclists or known to drug testers.

Anyone read the Buzz Bissinger stuff from earlier? I heard it was ridiculous. I tried reading it but the website keeps crashing my browser. Damn phone web!

Have to say, if people don't like the idea of athletes doping, then just don't watch high-level professional sports. In most of the popular ones, the winners use PEDs. Lance is a particularly good athlete who's being crucified because people don't like this reality.

Seems like just a little while ago I was reading a statement from him trying to shame the commission that claimed they had evidence of him cheating and calling them and his teammates thy came forward jealous liars. He sounds like a real piece of crap based on what I've seen.

No, he's being crucified because he's a lying, hypocritical asshole who treats people like shit and shrouds himself in a cancer charity to deflect criticism.

Armstrong defence force?

Even if that it true, how do you account for his continued deceit and lying since the allegations came against him. He seems to have no remorse what so ever and this Oprah interview has to be the most cynical PR stunt of all time. The questions will be light weight and designed not to criticise him, but allow him to feign remorse - which he seems incapable of. (he seems like a total sociopath).

If this interview is to have any credibility what so ever, Oprah must ask him to name names and discuss who he supplied and was supplied by.

Nobody was using PEDs near as much as Lance. Lance was great at time trials. But there is no way in hell his sprinting or hill climbing would have won him the overall in TdF once, much less multiple times. Allowing doping turns everything in to a race of who has the most money.

Plus, the don't watch professional sports is a pretty naive position. Doping does seep down to junior/college/high school levels. It should be heavily controlled on what is allowed. Otherwise college/amateur athletes will get forced into doping because sponsors force it. Are you really ok with billion dollar companies using young athletes as livestock for their testing programs? Are people dieing from transfusions or EPO really OK with you?

I've always thought this guy was a massive piece of shit and am pleased he's been exposed. Hope Oprah doesn't give him the airtime for his crocodile tears.

"I can't answer those questions. I've made some regrettable mistakes in the past, but this is about moving forward"

Probably some bullshit like that. On the other hand Lance is completely full of himself and would happily throw other people to the wolves to save himself, so who knows. I hope is completely open, but I doubt it.

For a significant number of us this has next to nothing to do with the drugs. Armstrong is scum.

For me it's a little of both. I understand why the athletes got caught up in it. If it was just about doping, I would still respect Lance. Much like I still respect Hamilton, Hinncapie, Leipheimer and Contador. The rules pretty much allowed them to get away with it and UCI does hold a good portion of the blame.

But, Lance double down'd on everyone that tried to come clean. People getting pushed out of the sport because they speak out against doping. Paying off UCI, so tests disappear. These are the things that make Lance a dick.

If this interview is to have any credibility what so ever, Oprah must ask him to name names and discuss who he supplied and was supplied by.

We already know about a lot of the suppliers. Hamilton already laid it out. I doubt we will get an honest thing out of Lance, he will only admit as much as he has to, to get it all to go away.

He needs to be taken to task big time.

I work in cancer research, but what he did can't be justified.

He's like those criminal organisations who have historically donated loads to charity to cleanse their sins and make them 'untouchable'.

He not only destroyed people who threatened to expose him, but also those who simply would not go along with his program.

Oprah will be soft on him. We need Paxman for this.
