EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

It was on the front page for, I'd argue, 90% of its run time, and was rotated off occasionally due to competing event placement as it was a busy weekend. What you recall was one of those moments where someone noticed this and people decided to go crazy.

And Ben is right. The fighting game scene doesn't know how to market their own events correctly. Neither do a lot of LoL, DoTA, StarCraft, Smash.. essentially, a lot of competitive gaming tournaments and leagues. Even MLG, IPL and their ilk are guilty of this. If I can't go to the major hub of a scene or tournament and not immediately find the who, what, where and when of an event, that's a huge problem. It's part of my job to know all these details and when I can't manage to pull this off, I can't imagine what it's like for your average fan.

I think you're completely over exaggerating this, I've been in a pretty similar position in regards to compiling event/scene information. I've done a lot of tournament work for various games, communities and competitive gaming sites, even been one of the more key members in 1 or 2 scenes/games and I can't say I ever run into an issue like this.

Even today when I follow certain games as loosely as possible I'm still aware of what events are happening and who are the key players/teams in that event. Maybe that has to do with me knowing various people from various scenes who will occasionally fill me in on things and I obviously don't know every last detail that a dedicated fan would know but I'm confused at how you find this hard when it's your job. (I'm aware this isn't the sole purpose of your job though and I'm sure there are other aspects of it that clash and make it more difficult)

I know tons of very casual competitive gaming fans who know what's going on and they're as uninvolved as you can be, again maybe this is due to the differences in scenes between Europe and the US and the general interest levels of your general person. This isn't an attack on your ability to do your job or anything like that, just coming from the point of view of someone who has done work like this.

I do agree events need more exposure but when competitive gaming has been around for so long and we've nearly exhausted every avenue for exposure, (other than major sponsors), that other forms of competition have grown through, it's tough to say what the next meaningful step is.

RULES CHANGED:
http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/13/evo-2013-donation-drive-standings-and-rule-update/

MLP, Fighting is Magic is in a unique situation. The game has no official release date, and it’s not clear if the game will be ready in time for players to get up to speed in time for Evo 2013. For the Mane6 team, this contest represents and artificial deadline. We don’t want to put any undo pressure on them to release anything but their best effort when it’s ready. So, after talking to the Mane6 guys, we’ve decided to handle FiM slightly differently.

First, FiM will be back in a big way at the Evo 2013 Indie Gaming Showcase (spoiler, the Indie Gaming Showcase from Evo 2012 returns in 2013!). This year we will have multiple setups so a lot more players will get a crack at the game. This is 100% happening regardless of the results of the donation drive, and we’re happy to have the game back for a second year.

Next, we’re removing FiM from the running for the 8th Evo game. If FiM finishes with the most money donated, we will take the game with the second highest donations as the 8th Evo game. But, should FiM win the donation drive, Evo will sponsor an exhibition tournament and run it out of the Indie Gaming Showcase. The top 8 players from the exhibition will fight it out on stage and stream, like previous Evo exhibitions.

One more thing. As you can see, so far the FiM guys are kicking everyone else’s tails (I’m sure there’s a pony pun in there somewhere). So let’s make things a little more interesting. Evo will provide a $1000 bonus to the first place game. If a game manages to take down FiM and come out on top of the donation drive, Evo will spike the tournament pot for $1000. If FiM wins, the $1000 will go towards prizes for their exhibition.

The current standings and amounts have been posted:

Current Donation Drive Top 10 Standings, 1/13/2013

1. MLP, Fighting is Magic: $3,519.50
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee: $1,404.32
3. Skullgirls: $814.22
4. Guilty Gear XX, Accent Core Plus : $767.90
5. Soul Calibur V: $387.41
6. Divekick: $343.95
7. Dead or Alive 5: $202.69
8. Blazblue: $200.00
9. Virtua Fighter 5: $191.00
10. Super Smash Bros. Brawl: $155.00

Personally, I would love to see position 3 or 4 win this competition. (Divekick at 6 is pretty awesome too)

Edit: I was half sleep, missed the change or rules.

Ah, so Fighting is Magic can't become the 8th game since it's not completed yet, but if it wins, we'll get a special pony exhibition tournament in addition to the other 8 main tournaments?

That seems like a reasonable call. Isn't it standard EVO practice that a game must have been out for a certain amount of time before it can be a tournament? Also, I'd imagine the Mane6 team might have had a hoof in this behind the scenes.

Short version: Vote ponies for even more EVO time. Can you imagine EVO with both Melee and ponies? That'd be fun to watch.

Basically EVO will have a few open set ups for people to try out MLP. If MLP does indeed win then they will pick the best 8 player at the pony station and have them play in a exhibition on the main stage. They did the same thing with MVC3 when it was first announced.

With this situation I think everyone will be happy. BUT the charity will suffer a little bit. (Without Bronies pushing it, I don't think there is going to be too much pressure from the other communities)

The donation pages also show the totals now. Smash has jumped over $300 since that post, MLP $50, and someone has dropped a cool 1K on DOA5, propelling it to 3rd place.

Melee is leading behind MLP? CvS2 and Third Strike are nowhere to be found? There is no justice in this world.

I'm pleasantly surprised about Skullgirls 3rd place spot (well, before someone dropped 1k on DOA). Good stuff to the community!

The compromise with MLP sounds fair. Sounds like the devs might have had a hand in it too. Hope this doesn't cause any big drama.

I think Melee stands a pretty good chance of catching up MLP, as it seems to be growing more quickly now, and the Smashboards posse etc seem emboldended now they can see they're in second place and basically secured to get in with company donations banned and MLP ruled out of the eighth slot. They may as well shoot for the pot bonus now.

uh, CvS2 and 3S never made it past the 500 vote threshold, so you can't really vote for those.

So now 9 games will be in? I'm okay with this.
Not exactly. MLP will not have an official tournament being run on the main stage or streamed (by the main stream anyways). It'll be part of the Indie Showcase the organizers started last year. If it does win though there will be an exhibition tournament and the top 8 of that tournament will be streamed and played on the main stage.

I have to wonder if it was planned this way. Probably not, but having MLP there does mean there is more money going to cancer research. Both those donating to the ponies and those donating to beat the ponies. This isn't a lock yet for any game, all it takes is someone bored and rich enough to tip the scales. Still, for now, ponies are the game to catch, and Melee is the 8th game anyway. I wonder if this is going to be played defensively, or if people are going to just go all out.

I give it 50% odds that the winner is going to be determined by a last minute snipe donation, though...

Yeah, I know it's not really 9 games in the tournament. But, it's still more entertainment to be had. Maybe next year MLP will get in proper.

I didn't know company donations were banned. That's cool. Now I feel like Melee has an actual chance of winning.

And I really hope it does.

And I really hope Nintendo watches.

Smash would be fun to watch so I wouldn't care if that won. The only thing I'd rather watch from that top 10 would be Guilty Gear.

lol @ Melty with $40. Stay furi.

Melee hype is right up there with MvC so I'd love to see it on stage.

Did it have an item ruleset the last time it was at EVO?

I don't know if it was last time, but one year they did, and the melee community raged. EVO has confirmed it won't be there should melee win, though.

Sakurai will watch and decide that you didn't get the hint from Brawl.

Air tripping. No turning off items. All stages filled with randomly generated hazard mayhem.

Hitstun only lasts as long as the attack's recovery frames. You take damage if you somehow land a 2+ hit combo.

9 stage games? So EVO is just never going to end this year? I'm okay with this.

Sunday will be fixed at 5 games, Mr Wizard said that the other games will end at Fri and Sat.

BTW it might be 10 stage games because Mr Wizard mentioned that the guys who organized last year's ST Tournament of Legends are planning on something this year.

Wasn't that Brawl? Melee had an Evo in 2007 where they actually went by the Smash community's ruleset. The last time Smash was at Evo was in 2008 with Brawl and that was when they had items on (because it was a new game, but the Brawl half of the Smash community at that time had items off and thus, those who hated the ruleset did not attend).

How is a unreleased gamed beating all these other games? Many which have proven to be great spectator games. A MLP game at that?! Sad, sad world.

Why ask if you're going to answer yourself?

Anyways, I'm glad they changed the rules. Nothing against MLP or the game itself, but I just want other games to be on stage much more and had things stayed the way they were there would've been no chance at all for that.

People who keep harping on "unreleased" status don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Super Street Fighter 4 was announced for Evo 2010 before it was released.
AE was announced for Evo 2011 before it was released.
Marvel vs Capcom 3 was announced for Evo 2011 before it was released.
Street Fighter X Tekken was announced for Evo 2012 before it was released.
Divekick is part of the donation drive and it has yet to be officially released.

The difference is that all of these games had a release schedule. AE did not have a concrete date when the Evo 2011 lineup was announced but it also had an easy fallback option if it didn't come out by a specified date.

MLP doesn't have a release schedule, and the devs have made this known to the Evo people.

Those numbers seem kinda low for the donations.

If I was any of these companies with games still purchasable I would proxy donate (Since no company donate) and get my game into the stage. 5K for that kind of publicity seems pretty cheap.

Someone mentioned earlier that company donations are banned.

Seems against the vision of donating to charity, but supportive of having the actual fans choose the final EVO game.

Feels like they only should have only accepted donations at tournament locations (both big ones like APEX and small locals which got in touch with Mr Wizard)... but w/e. In fact that might get more people to go to tournaments. (P.S. I'm a total hypocrite with that last line, lol)

It would have been nice if this was the situation in the first place, instead of changing after donations have been entered. But the change was for the better. I like the situation now.
