Except for Fable: The Journey. And Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. And Resident Evil 6. And New Super Mario Bros. U. And...

Almost every game. Not every game.

If brad started giving games like RE6 and Steel Battalion 5 stars I think Jeff would have a word with him before it even hit the site.

DmC got five stars huh. Didn't expect that, expected four stars. Oh well might be good at $10 but I still don't like the direction DMC's going in.

Alright, I've already gone this far. I might as well take the plunge...

Total number of games Brad reviewed in 2012: 26

Number of games that Brad gave 5 stars: 5

"Almost every game": Less than 25%

Math!

FUUUUCK. I cant be assed to check your math out but sure. You win.

Congrats Rorie!!!!

And Yeah Brad.... that guy should go work for game informer if he likes using the same score for every game.

Brad reviews for me at least have become kind of useless since he gives almost everything 5 stars. It just doesnt help me buy anything anymore when everything is 5 star awesomeness.

He should try use more of the scale because all of his 5 star games are not equal.
Posts like this make me wish Giant Bomb would just do away with scores. I get why, but even as the shortest of short hands for how a reviewer feels about a game (1-5, as opposed to say 1-100), it always dominates the conversation over the actual text in the review.

Get your math and logic out of here! This is a place for blind criticisms with no basis, it is our way of life.

If you are going to complain about the review of a game you haven't played yet because you think the score is too high (or the reviewer was), why do you even read reviews? Honest question, because I've felt for a long time that the only reason most people care about reviews is because they've already made up their mind and most people CRAVE affirmation of their opinions.

Since you did all the work already, what were the 5 he gave 5/5?

Oh, I gotcha.

wtf, WHY DOES GIANTBOMB HATE PLAYSTATION 3 SO MUCH? DID SONY PISS IN THEIR CORN FLAKES THE MORNING THEY FOUNDED THE SITE? Maybe they're too busy wearing their MONEYHATS from MICROSOFT??! Heh... more like MICROSHAFT, amirite?

Since you did all the work already, what were the 5 he gave 5/5?

Far Cry 3, Diablo III, Mark of the Ninja, Trials: Evolution, Dust: An Elysian Tail.

Giant Bomb in general uses the "perfect" score more often because they have less range in their scores on a 5 point scale. They also give more "6/10" scores (3/5) than most sites for this reason as well. I don't see a big problem with this. It doesn't mean a given game is perfect or mind blowingly amazing it means it is a very high recommendation.

I know the important one: Diablo 3. That's the one that "hits me in the feels" as the kids say. God that game was boring, uninspired by the numbers loot grind. I have a hard time believing if it had any other name on the box it would not have recieved nearly as many near perfect scores.

But in general, I have no problems with Brad's reviews and I generally share his tastes (excepting his absolutely crazy justifications for Skyrim being better than Saints Row The Third).

Can we all agree that if Brad liked the crazy action of DmC enough to give it 5 stars, it would be a good idea for him to go back and finish Bayonetta?

Very illuminating! Less than 25% on a 5 star scale seems reasonable. I'm not a big reviews guy anyway. They are the features I'm probably least likely to read but I'm sure I'm in the minority.

Can you define 'more often'? For most of them it's their third most used score behind 4 and 3. Patrick didn't even give out a 5 and Ryan only gave out one last year.

It's also worth keeping in mind the types of games each staff member is being given, as Brad could be getting lucky on average with his assignments. Their worst game of the year category is "presented by Alex Navarro" for a reason :P

Because in theory, they give him all the junk games that none of them want to play.

Site average is meaningless anyway, since the site is basically personality driven.

Well yeah, no shit, but I would love to squeeze some blood from a stone and figure out why people are disagreeing to a review for a game they haven't played.

I thought the review read fine apart from the last line. Regurgitating Capcom's PR bullshit about the series being in decline as part of a critical analysis seems weird. Like some preemptive appeal to authority against the inevitable internet flames.

Hi. You might remember me as Ben the former really tall intern with the deep voice that wasn't Daniel. I used to do a podcast with Kessler, Lemon and Nick called Internal Affairs for Whiskey Media that a couple of you guys liked. Just wanted to let you know we started doing it again (sans Lemon) for our new thing Gameburglars.

Podcast: https://t.co/GTuq4z9X.

Ben! You were the one who rocked Actraiser, right?

I honestly think it's not "Brad likes video games" but "Brad has a tendency for uncontrollable hyperbole for games that he likes"

like, not Arthur Gies levels, but at least 0.68 gies of hyperbole on the scale

Pretty much. His opinion also tends to become less hyperbolic as more time passes from the game's release.

And come on, any comparison to Gies is just mean.

Brad has never steered me wrong, aside from LA Noire. Ill check DMC out when its cheaper.

Edit: Oh wait there was Diablo 3 and Other M too. But most of the time his recommendations worked out.

Objectively review games using spreadsheets and formula? Complaints.

Give reviewers a platform which to get their personal tastes and preferences across so they can write subjective reviews using the full scoring scale? Complaints.

oh DMC got 5 stars cool lemme read it

cool cool sounds good

oh 400 comments let me check and see what's going on in there

"I used to value your opinion Brad, no longer. I used to trust giantbomb's reviews, no longer. After this and your view of ME3, you're either clinically retarded or getting paid, and either way, I just can't stomach you anymore."

Oh man, why are people so brutal? I get disagreements but such rage over a person's opinion of a videogame. Obviously, it's nothing new but I still just do not understand that mentality. I feel like I'm as passionate about games as just about anyone and I've never had this kind of reaction.
