VGLeaks: PlayStation 4 "Orbis" Roadmap

i was just about to comment that in my youth it was stuff like "i saw the Megadrive 2, its INSANE"

I have one of those! Well, a Genesis actually. $5 at EBX back in 2004.

I remember they used to have this bin with retro stuff, like an NES and NES and Genesis games. They even had a brand new one PSOne console and the monitor brand new a little later on.

I miss those days.

Hopefully they do want to go over that, as we've had a 128-bit bus for two generations, and I'd think it would severely limit the efficiency of the system further ahead.
It will also severely limit the ability to shrink the size of the APU and get a cost advantage on the newer production processes. I wouldn't count on 256-bit bus.

I have a tremendous amount of faith in Sony despite some major missteps by them this generation. The hacking scandal, the 599 price point, and PSN being total garbage at launch are probably the most egregious things I can think of. To be fair, PSN has improved by leaps and bounds and I'm positive that PSN on the PS4 is going to be an even bigger improvement. I thought that Playstation Plus was one of the gems of this generation in terms of features and free software. The PS4 will come packed with a headset (I wouldn't be surprised if they bit the bullet and included an official Sony Bluetooth headset in every console) and that will definitely help build their online community from the onset.

The smartest thing they did this generation was invest in companies such as Sucker Punch and Media Molecule. I think that is going to pay off for them big time. I also like the fact that they seemed to invest in new IPs at a higher clip than their competitors. You're probably going to see less exclusive software from Sony when it comes to the PS4 and they'll likely invest in even meatier game experiences while focusing on larger marketing budgets. At this point, I'm expecting The Last Guardian to be ported over to the PS4 as a potential launch title (my theory is that the game WAS in development hell and they chose to hold onto the title once they finally wrapped their heads around the performance issues). I think that an early GT6 release (within the first year, even if it is a gimped version that eventually builds on itself through exorbitant amounts of DLC) is imperative to their success overseas. The PS3 had a pretty weak year one in terms of software and I think the biggest advantage they have over Microsoft is that they can a lot of sterling first party software releases during the PS4's first year. I think that GG, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Santa Monica, and even Naughty Dog have been tinkering with the PS4 for months, and even years, now.

^ Well said, totally agree.

I would add that Sony has build up a lot of momentum with indie developers and i expect it will continue with the PS4.

Really disappointing if the PS4 won't have the same amount of RAM. If it's going to be half as much, it's going to have to be at least twice as fast... Even so, it'd be a bit difficult to build a streaming system to accommodate for that -- and be multiplatform.

Before you get crucified, Read up on the rest of the thread, the two types of ram are different (if you're referring to the 720 specs)

It won't be an issue. I'm willing to bet that the 4GB of RAM in the PS4 will strictly focused on gaming and they'll have another pool of RAM dedicated to the OS and other features. Sony has been asking developers what they'd prefer to see in the PS4 so that's already an improvement over the PS3.

I agree. Sony's 1st party offerings are off the chain, PS+ is what a sub should look like and i'm keeping my fingers crossed that the PS4 store will be a revamp of the previous iteration. It was miles ahead of the current store.

Sony wasn't anywhere near even a semblance of a road at the onset of this gen, since they have righted themselves, found the dragstrip and hammered down - they are doing better than I thought and remain pleased with the PS3.

I sure do hope both the 720 and PS4 will be neck and neck again next gen since that will make both MS and Sony work that much harder and deliver amazing experiences. Here's hoping both continue to do well.

Yea, here's me hoping the same but if not, I am hoping that it doesn't exceed 512MB in the "worst" case scenario if the supposition of 4GB GDDR5 is true.

Given how much trouble people are having in gaming forum, Sony would have uphill battle trying to educate the masses about the potential misconceptions of potential buyers if MS makes ads or announcement that they've got 2x the RAM is PS4. To a lay person, more is better.

so they could just say "our superturbo ram is twice as fast as 720s" and lay people will say OMG it has turbos...dual edge argument

The one thing I'm worried about is the DRM issue. As someone who can't afford to shell out $60 a month for a game I kinda depend on Gamefly to play most games, so if they make used games unplayable or whatever I'm going to be fucked over. I'd LOVE if PS4 had it's own Gamefly-esque system. Play $15 a month, and you can download the full version of 1 game at a time. Get bored with it, "return" it, it's removed from your harddrive and you can download another game. Even if they made it a 1 game per day or few days it would still be great.

If DRM happens it will be an industry wide thing in the console market. Sony will not do it on their own. That is simply not a possibility at this point. Both the publishers and console manufacturers will reach an agreement and implement this if required but you will not have a situation where there is DRM on one console and not in the other.

That might be so but if Sony bring out a few games from there first party that look just as good or better it won't matter .
At the end of the day games and services are what going to sell systems .

Gaikai might be that thing for you.

AND MORE CORES!!!!

Nothing to worry about.... I rather have the best performing solution or the easiest to market? easy choice. Most company dont even announce specs like wiiu or ipad for example. We will be lucky to have that details of specs to be even announce...

It would be a terrible idea to try to market more ram when its not an advantage.

Anyone that would be confused about that or use it against the PS4 won't care about specs once they see games, especially if they run at pretty much the same framerate and level of fidelity.

Both MS and Sony will market whatever it is they have to sound better than the other, especially since their early marketing is to hardcore gamers who really care about tech.

If MS has double the RAM, they'll be touting it as the only thing that matters (even if half of it is reserved for apps), and Sony will be screaming about how their faster RAM is going to change the world. The two different approaches to console design rumored is perfect for keeping fanboy wars alive for a long time; Digital Foundry must be ecstatic.

Hit the nail on the head.

I still think it's premature to write the book on the RAM amounts. If Sony can get a DDR3/4 stack ready they might as well push it up to 8GBs, too. Interposers and 2.5/3D memory stacks have seemed like Sony's goal all along.

The fanboy backflips required by MS going with more, weaker cores and Sony pinning their hopes on a more efficient memory architecture and per-thread performance are going to be hilarious.

Send him to the RAM thread. It's such a peaceful thread these days!

Yeah good idea

Nah I doubt MS will advertise it as such. I mean if they do all sony has to do is FASTEST RAM EVAH or something. Doubt either scenario will happen though. In the first year or so these products will be aimed mainly at the core gamer crowd anyways

As others said check this thread out

All things being equal? Probably Durango because Microsoft can pump out better tools and documentation.

But that's really a negligible difference. Most if not all developers will be supporting both systems.

Can someone explain how you can run GDDR5 ram on a console?
The same way video cards use GDDR5 RAM?
You solder chips onto the board and then draw traces to connect them to the GPU. In PS4's case that'll be the APU, which will have its memory controller just like a GPU.

I'm pretty sure both systems will be out this year. I can't remember the last time two systems launched head to head like this. 360 and PS3 came out months apart, as did the PS2 and Xbox.

This holiday season is going to be a bloodbath, if rumors are to be believed.

That said, launch lineups always suck for every system ever.

you must mean ps and xbx because gc and xbx launched the same year and month.same for wii and ps3.

Not for Dreamcast...

And with Battlefield 4, Call of Duty, and Watch Dogs possibly launching... Not this gen either.

The thing is it will look better too. 8 GB of DDR3 + EDRAM for frame buffer operations sound like a better design than just 4 GB of GDDR5. The difference may turn out to be in rendering resolutions (which may be higher on PS4 in general) and some effects (which may be more complex on PS4) but in the end Xbox 3 with twice as much RAM will have better textures and more assets in a frame in general (meaning less streaming and less pop-in).

As for OS talk I'm sorry but the difference will be negligible because PS4 will have to be able to do all the same stuff that Xbox 3 will do plus MS have much more expirience in OS coding and thus will be able to fit more functions into smaller memory footprint. 4 GB vs 8 GB is just like it sounds -- twice more RAM. And slowness of DDR3 will probably be covered by EDRAM.

Durango may be able to buffer more assets in memory, but if it can only read 1/4 as much data in any given frame as Orbis you won't see the difference on screen. Being able to store higher resolution textures is no benefit if the memory is too slow to actually use them.

Would GDDR5 have made a significant difference for the PS2 HD re-releases that relied on the PS2's super turbo bandwidth? Would PS4 be able to run ZoE games at 60 FPS?

90% of console gamers have no idea what the fuck ram is.

Why are we even taking these current RAM specs as gospel?

Orbis could end up having more, and Durango could end up having less. Nothing is concrete until the next few months.

Precisely, that´s the problem. They read twice RAM and the message is settled...

I imagine most people are more swayed by seeing videos of the games than of the specs.

If specs won out over the user experience then a LOT of the last 15-20 years would be different in the tech world.

Precisely, that´s the problem. They read twice RAM and the message is settled...

Dude, dont worry. Neither side will be talking about ram in their marketing because 95% of the people dont give a fuck. Its about the games. The days of "blast processing" is over. Do you honestly believe xbox will have a commercial mentioning how much ram they have? No, because no one cares.

Top Bottom
