Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

wait so it's okay for the media to withhold information to protect their interests (ratings) but if a school withholds information like Penn State...oh no you can't do that here's 4 years of sanctions!
Not only that but they interest stories on him leading up to and the day of the game and i am pretty sure that they mentioned her the day of the game.

From a pic taken with a recruit last year:

None of those quotes are directly from him though.

Yeah, the out there is that Te'o merely told his family he was meeting the girl, and they just believed him because why would he lie about meeting his internet girlfriend who flew out to Hawaii to meet him?

It's a crappy out, because it means he was lying to his family about meeting an internet girlfriend (who never existed) but it's an out. Further, it ends up begging the question "well, why were you lying to your family, and who were you out with instead?"

So, if Te'o tries to continue this charade for far longer than seems reasonable, does that seemingly raise the chances that this is a coverup of him being gay?

This was my first thought upon hearing this in the car on the way home from work. Why else would you do this?

Just like Musberger iterated in his statement regarding his "inappropriate" comments toward A.J McCarron's girlfriend. "ESPN tries to find compelling story lines...." Manti's Sob story was no doubt one of the compelling story lines they were running to generate outside interest for the MN Championship game.

its his dad saying they met up in hawaii. he was lying to his family about his relationship?

I'm not saying it's a good excuse but I imagine it's what he'll end up telling the public.

He talks about her physical appearance and how he would talk to "the love of his life" daily on the phone on the ESPN interview.

Again, I believe he was in on the hoax but he could just say he was describing her physical appearance from the pictures he saw.

It may have started as a minor prank when he realized what would happen if it was found out, so he tried to "kill" her off, and then it blew up into something he couldn't control.

This story broke just as I was leaving to see a client. I really hate that, because now I'm on like page 150 of the thread. LOL! Anyway, as someone who hates Notre Dame with a passion, this is just too juicy. I'm loving this story. PEACE.

I've decided the only way for this to be he had no idea about what was going on would be for the girl whose picture was used for the Twitter profile WAS in on it (for whatever reason), and lied off her ass to Deadspin to cover her own.

It's a stretch, but then, this whole story makes little sense.

There's a lot of just behavioral issues with his story

Like her insisting that he not skip a game and him being like "ok", or not insisting on seeing her even when she was dying, etc.

Also the fact that the "perpetrator" was a family friend and they were buds.

I mean, it doesn't take a math professor.

Yeah. I could see it. How could the girl not know before DeadSpin approached? Surely someone she knew recognized her on TV? But I still think he was in on it regardless.

Are people really buying that excuse that he was a victim? He heard the media narrative. If it was a hoax, why didn't he come out with it as soon as he heard it? Ha! Dude is a fake, a phoney and a fraud. I'm just learning Tuisasosopo was in on it. Is that true? I thought that guy had fallen off the face of the earth. PEACE.

It's a different Tuiasasopo. Not the one who went to UW and held a clipboard for the Raiders.

There are 500 Tuiasosopos. This particular one wasn't one of the football players.

I read the story, but I don't understand why a possible conclusion is that he's gay. I don't see why he had to create a girlfriend to cover that up. Was there ever an inkling that he was gay before the hoax began? Am I missing something?

Also, it was reported that they met at a football game. If Manti really never met her in real life, why would he allow that detail to be published? Why would he need to lie about that if he believed he was really involved with this girl?

He's a Mormon, goes to a Catholic university, and plays football. That circumstance would drive you about as far into the closet as possible.

People wouldn't question you never being interested in girls.

Because this story is so fucking ridiculous that it's one of the ways a rational person would think.

Also because he is (was?) a sure-fire top pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. If he is indeed gay, he stands to literally lose MILLIONS of dollars. In fact, he probably wouldn't be drafted.
