Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

I don't know why people keep saying that his draft stock dropped so much after the Alabama game when

1) it's one game compared to an entire season worth of data on his ability
2) Alabama's oline is amazing

Alabama's o-line is amazing. Almost as good as some in the NFL. That's why it plummeted.

edit: Not to mention missed tackles on the running backs and receivers.

Idk if he's closeted its his business. The lying about his gf is ridiculous, but I think prying into his sex life is pretty tawdry.

The internet's reaction to this is tawdry and sad. We really have no idea exactly what went down here, but everyone's got it all figured out already.

There's a term in the legal profession called "judgment proof." What that means is that even if you have the strongest case in the world against someone, there's no point in wasting the time and resources in bringing that case because they have no assets that can be used to satisfy the judgment.

I see

"One game" can, has, and always will effect draft stock of projected top 5 guys. The scrutiny is through the rough. Also, Bama's O-line is almost NFL-good - which is why its a big deal. If he can't look amazing against them, then why should anyone expect him to look amazing at the next level? That was a hell of a showing. Its like when wideouts get jammed on the line in college... NFL DBs bump all the time. If they can't get off the line in college, then its hard to say that they will in the pros.

Another thing is that people were walking through him. He looked terrible in the biggest game of his life. Not a good look for the best MLB in the nation aka Ray Lewis 2.0

Yeah it's amazing how many on GAF have jumped on the gay theory.

Perhaps its a little much, but what convinced me is his father saying he met the girlfriend. That smacks of denial on the father's part not wanting his son to be gay. Obviously, I could be wrong but thats my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I really can't wait for it all to be revealed but I doubt we will get the absolute truth. There's several possible motives for just about every twist in this story. It's a chose-your-own-ending hoax!

The Manti-is-gay theory makes zero sense to me.

If you're a closeted college football player who belongs to a homophobic church and attends a school run by another homophobic church, you're not going to invent a cover that increases the likelihood of an extremely public and extremely humiliating outing.

The more likely explanation is that the Te'o family is a bunch of shameless fame whores.

Pretty much. He just lied to get ahead. Even if he is gay, getting ahead was still his motivation for the lie.

Yeah it's amazing how many on GAF have jumped on the gay theory.

It's because we can all relate to the fear of losing it all and disappointing our friends and family. Any other explanation doesn't make any reasonable sense to those of us that hopped on the gay train.

I mean, he supposedly knew this “girl” for three years, and he dated “her” for nearly one year, and he only got so much as a picture from her? A close friend of his was probably the mastermind behind the alias, too?

I don't know, maybe he could be that stupid. Even if, there would still be moon-sized craters in his story.

Pretty much. He just lied to get ahead. Even if he is gay, getting ahead was still his motivation for the lie.

I don't buy that, because nothing that has come out leads me to believe he's sharp enough to come up with that kind of long-term plan. This whole thing just got of hand, whether Te'o is in on it or not.

Yeah it's amazing how many on GAF have jumped on the gay theory.

A Mormon going to a Catholic schools and being the star player on that schools top ranked football team. A guy who is (or was) going to be a high first round pick in the NFL draft.

Why would he have an internet/phone only relationship with someone he never met in person when there are plenty of hot women at Notre Dame? Why does his story change so much? How come the picture used in the gf's twitter profile came from an acquaintance of Te'o who got a highschool friend to unknowingly pose for the photo that was used in the profile. That acquaintance is gay.

Edit: Alright MRE I edited that last part out. BTW, your response was in the google cache already. Amazing.

I didnt put 2 and 2 together on who the guy was that is the only person to say he actually met the gf. Yeah this is starting to look like an elaborate beard set up that blew up in Te'o face.

That's because the guy in the Bleacher Report article talking about homosexuality in the NFL, former NFL player Esera Tuaolo, is not the same guy who said he has met Manti Te'o's girlfriend. That was current NFL player, Reagan Mauia.

Ok I'll grant you he's gay and created Leenay as his beard. Why kill her in a crash/leukemia combo? It's so dramatic. Why kill her at all? Just break up with your fake GF. Why tell your coaches it was a hoax? These choices make him look even dumber than someone who got pranked.

Just listened to an interview with one of the Deadspin writers on Dan Patrick's show. The most interesting thing I took from it was he said that all of the people they talked to in putting together the story, which would be the most important people involved in this whole thing, all had never talked to the supposed Notre Dame investigators. So there's that.

People might try to contact her if he just said they broke up.

But fake-killing her under tragic circumstances gives the sports media a massive boner.

Nobody is going to want to interview a random ex-girlfriend. They will, however, want to interview the mother and father of a college football star's dead girlfriend.

ennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago.

She was gifted in music, multi-lingual, had dreams grounded in reality and the talent to catch up to them.

The plan was for Kekua to spend extensive time with the whole Te'o family when upwards of 40 of them came to South Bend in mid-November for ND's Senior Day date with Wake Forest.

"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.

"And we came to the realization that she could be our daughter-in-law. Sadly, it won't happen now."

so uh...has this been explained yet?

Yup thought that was very interesting. Quite the "investigation" ND put together it sounds like.

If you subscribe to the beard theory, she was invented as a reason why he was not taking advantage of all the girls who were probably throwing themselves at him. Look at any star college football player and see how many girls they get and the quality of girls they get. Inventing a girlfriend gives you an excuse for not hooking up all the time. Another strategy would be to go with the religion card(see Tebow, Tim).

It is possible he got tired of actively keeping up the charade. Maybe it was too much work keeping the story and the tweets going (see the Seinfeld episode about Elaine and Susie). If you just break up with her then you are expected to start dating again within weeks. If the love of your life dies, then you could always play the "I am not ready yet" card. The flaw with this theory is it involves forward thinking which seems in short supply. More than likely, she was killed off for attention.

Why would anyone try to contact or even know about her in that case? The tragic story is what brought all the attention to it.

Not necessarily the media. Under the closet theory he's trying to keep the story plausible for other people as well. I'm just guessing obviously. There are a lot of things that don't add up.

But fake-killing her under tragic circumstances gives the sports media a massive boner.

But they didn't. Until Deadspin got a tip nobody did any checking on this.

But then the other question from me would be, “What in the hell was he really doing when he told his dad he went to see the girlfriend?”

In my opinion, two possible things:
Meeting someone else
Getting stood up, being embarrassed about it, and saying otherwise

Also, I think the anonymous tip that Deadspin caught was given to them for a very specific reason. It's entirely in the realm of possibility that it was someone with a grudge against him who knew about this, and wanted to cause problems. Like a hoaxer being denied extortion, or a recently broken up with boy/girlfriend. It smacks of revenge.

I'm still bewildered by Notre Dame's response.

Issue a statement: "T'eo did a really stupid thing, but not an illegal or sanctionable thing. He's a senior and his playing career at Notre Dame is over. We wish him the best."

Case closed.

Swarbrick's press conference was bananas. It should really bring into question his judgment as an AD. He took an embarrassing situation and made it even more humiliating for the university. What a dumbass.

But then the other question from me would be, “What in the hell was he really doing when he told his dad he went to see the girlfriend?”

Yeah I cant understand why he would tell his dad he was meeting his gf in Hawaii if he was just being duped by someone over the phone. This part makes me think that he was definitely involved in this hoax.

Lol.

I'm seeing a lot more gay predictions in these past few pages. Wild ish bruh. Feel like I'm watching an episode of The Steve Wilkos Show. Someone toss a chair through the wall.

Manti and Swarbrick lie detector test results...right after the break!

edit: and stephen a. smith is just taking a dump all over Te'o on First Take (of course bayless took the opposite approach since that's the show).

Maybe some good will come out of this and the power conferences will feel embarrassed for Notre Dame and keep them out of any future discussions on the future of college football's postseason.

On the Dan Patrick show this morning, they thought it was someone at ESPN who was sick of them dragging their feet after having the story for about a week.
