Also, I think the anonymous tip that Deadspin caught was given to them for a very specific reason. It's entirely in the realm of possibility that it was someone with a grudge against him who knew about this, and wanted to cause problems. What about just random Stanford students? To me it is shocking that the girlfrend of a rival school's star player wouldn't be investigated by Stanford students. I mean if this happened in the SEC this would have been outed as a fake in about 5 minutes after NBC talked about it on air.

for the love of god i can't type the kids name, but its in the deadspin article. former high school football star who apparently was behind the Lennay Kakau person.

this story is a giant bag of fucked up. i watch the shit out of catfish and get that it can happen, but how the hell does this happen to one of the most polarizing football players in the country?

i'm confused how before yesterday there was 1 story which all outlets reported (met in 09, yada yada yada) and after yesterday...totally different story.

its staggering. in this 'age' of facetime, skyping, video chat, etc....there was never a red flag that this chick didn't want to meet up or have face2face conversations? unreal

Would Deadspin even act on such a tip? No offense to Stanford students, but it seems like the tip needed to supply a significant bit of info towards being a fake. People lie about their colleges all the time, no? That's not too newsworthy.

i saw a tweet this morning from a former stanford football player who said that Te'o would ask the guys on the team if they knew or heard of this chick. guess no one acted on it

What I'm trying to figure out is why people are sticking their neck out for this guy when they never even met him. None of these articles that have been released seem fishy at all to any of them.

I catch him on the podcast so I got to wait til it's available tonight. Skip has a huge Te'o mancrush, almost bordering on his Tebow one. He even said he expects Te'o to be the next Ray Lewis.

It seems like Skip curses the athletes he loves the most lol.
 
On the DP show the SI article writer just claims he believes Manti is telling the truth and he feels sorry for Manti. Talks about how all these acquaintances, a priest, players, the coaches, all just had the best things to say about Manti and also his girlfriend they never met. Apparently he talked about his girlfriend a whole lot.

The more I hear about how Manti is this perfect guy with upstanding morals and just naive, the more I think this is the sign of a psychopath. No one is as perfect and innocent as all these acquaintances say he is. Then again I want this to be like an episode of a soap opera so....

Exactly. They get to cash in on the long tail of the story without having to ever jeopardize their access to their sources by being the ones to betray/investigate them.

The SI writer sounded super naive to me, like "I just can't believe Manti would do it." The elaborateness of this hoax with Teo having no knowledge just strains belief, especially with a known friend of his being involved. I thought the SI guy did himself no favors.

Probably because this is a fun story to discuss -- and there's still some mystery to it. It's not so much about sports as it is about celebrity culture, and media, and it's that rare case where the most conspiracy-theory-sounding angle (that Te'o himself is involved) is most likely the truth of what happened.

There's nothing fun about the Sandusky story. It's just depressing and sick.

As I said earlier, I have a long distance boyfriend I met online and we talk on skype all the time. But neither of us have webcams so we don't see each other while we do it. So it's not completely unusual that Manti never saw this 'girl' on webcam.
 
Perhaps I can understand him not seeing her once on Skype. But he didn't do a spontaneous surprise visit once while she was dying of leukaemia? Bollocks.

yes it is unusal. Not saying it's wrong or anything along those lines, but NEVER actually seeing someone you claim to be in love with is unusual.

Watching the video of Brain Kelly giving Te'o the game ball after the Michigan win, even Te'o's body language is really strange. Constantly looking at the ground and he looks more nervous than sad. I wish i knew more about reading microexpression
