Yeah, I need a source for this. I know asking for sources is annoying to read, but I just don't remember that at all. Well even so, it still shouldn't take that long. TU's for Halo 2, 3 and now 4 came out around a few months post launch. They had more than enough time to compensate for the Anniversary update in September.

Right- they may not notice and identify them on a conscious level like we've done here on these boards, but it still translates into whether playing the game is fun or not.

I think most here would agree that the experience is at least a little more casual then in the past.
I don't even think going hardcore competitive is the right move for halo, though the options and a playlist (or two) certainly shouldnt be an after-thought. I think we've just finally gotten to that point where the sandbox and feature set of halo has grown beyond its own control, and its hard to really nail down the developers vision with this iteration of halo. It reeks of too many cooks in the kitchen.

They can change just about anything. It's above how much time, resources, man power, and what they think is important to change in a patch. Technically though, there isn't much of a limit of what they can change.

Chad (Shishka) said this about Reach, I assume the same applies to Halo 4.

Weren't the details of Bungie's Reach support and 343 handover in the Activision contract, and it specified that 343 would issue a TU if they wanted to, and that Bungie was only allowed to make that first DLC and do matchmaking support for the first 6 months?

I feel that the only way for a game to over take the "CoD" juggernaut is the be completely different, and not the carbon copies of perks, load outs, etc.

I remember back when every studio was trying to be the "Halo killer". They would try to copy Halo's formula of shields, two weapon systems, etc.

Then CoD 4 came out and broke the mold. Now everyone wants to be like them. It's a cynical cycle.

The week 1 population was comparable to what we see in BLOPS 2. People were hyped for this game. It has since fallen off to less than 1/4 what it was at launch, and is steadily dropping all the time. That doesn't indicate to me that the Xbox community doesn't care about Halo anymore, it indicates to me that they don't care for Halo 4.

I don't think this requires much "looking into". The multiplayer designers loaded up the game with stuff that the community never asked for- and they've since rejected the game. Beyond that, the game is missing key features that previous games in the series brought to the table. The path forward seems pretty clear to me.

I have no illusions of Halo overtaking the COD juggernaut. I just want to see Halo generate and hold a healthy population. It doesn't bother me that COD's population is 4-5 times that of Halo 4's. What's troubling is that COD's population has held steady since launch, while Halo 4's is steadily dying off.

You can try to justify it all you want, but it's a reality. This is the quickest halo 4 has ever dropped. You can say it's fatigue, or that other games are popular, but I see the sheer dislike on HaloGAF, gamefaqs, waypoint, etc. I see the low numbers. I see the msrp officially dropped so quick guys like cliffyb take note. It's number 4 and dropping. When it was number 2, guys like you and ozzy said it was the 2nd most played game, CoD was naturally going to be ahead. When it got beat by minecraft, you guys said minecraft is only a 1600 point game, more people can afford it and play it etc. Now that it's behind fifa, you say Europe loves its football and that it's to be expected etc.

When is the writing going to be on the wall for you guys? I know you think everyone is salty, but I don't know if you lurked or were here during the days of halo 2 and 3, the very same guys who you say only troll were the most passionate fans.

If it falls to number 5 next week, what's the excuse then? And yes I still play everyday. But the amount I play is nowhere close to the amount I played even reach. H4 frustrates me if I play more than 4-5 matches at a time. None of my friends play it and I was playing the previous games with them almost until the launch of the new one.

This is HaloGAF and for every person who likes the game, there are twenty people who don't. That shouldn't happen, especially after reach. But hey I'm just a junior, what do I know.
 
I get what you're saying Hitman I just think that with any Halo game that were to have come out now we'd see population decline. I guess we can't really know though.

I was talking about games in general not just Halo. In my opinion Halo won't take down CoD.

Halo ran last gen.
CoD ran this gen.

There is no telling who will run this new upcoming gen.
Maybe nintendo will finally make a decent shooter, who fucking knows.
I know I am ready for something new in genre, or a return to form where we go back to the highly skilled games of the past.

I never got the impression Bungue wanted to change something about Reach, especially not a TU, we don't know it for sure of course
 
I'd really like to see a shooter take on the characteristics of a sports game.
I think that'd be an interesting merging we havent seen yet.

Something with playcalls and mapped routes to really pull teamwork into something entirely new.
I'd love to see gameplay start to use timers and timeouts in a meaningful way, I think that'd be wild.

They could do that but I highly doubt it. 343 will likely perform minor updates and stick to their guns (in this instance, their Halo 4 design decisions).

And Halo 4 and the messaging 343 provides is so stiff, so controlled, that I doubt we'll get much from 343 in the way of clear reasons and explanations for why they do certain things and ignore particular complaints and problems. I wouldn't be surprised if someone were to claim that Microsoft is breathing down their necks moreso than they did with Bungie. At least Bungie was open with the community and the only time they weren't was likely due to the machinations of Microsoft and contractual agreements. For example, I remember Ferrex straight up defending his matchmaking playlist decisions in the Bungie.net forums shortly after Halo 3 launched. We've never seen anyone from 343 doing anything like that except for the damage control David and Frankie were doing pre-launch.

CoD only ran this gen from 2009 onwards, otherwise gears and halo were the top games... What's the coincidence there? CoD has maintained its brand of game play and style while the others tried to emulate others. I wouldn't be surprised if Gears: Judgment goes down a similar path.

I just miss the days when wars were won on the battlefield and not on the menus. I was playing a btb the other day and there was a banshee driver on exile just destroying us, and a guy on my team goes, it's okay, I'll get killed and pick my plasma pistol load out.
 
I'm just afraid that the support will stop after the last map pack in April, the next gen seems to be coming out in the October-November range (with the news of Splinter Cell in August). They will release the rest of Spartan Ops, Map Pack, a TU that fixes probably around 20% of the real issues, and get the File Shares up to something marginal of the past then be on their way. It hurts.

Well yeah. Sadly I do not have my parallel universe machine to see if Halo would have sold as well, garnered as much praise, or dropped as quickly (or quicker!) if it were the second coming of Halo 2 as some would like. We can make estimated guesses on some of it but ultimately no one from SLRP or Salt can say how the game would have turned out (they can of course say it would be a game they would rather play though.)

I've never played a soccer game outside of real life, passing direction just seems so important I was curious as to how they handled it. Figured there had to be some sort of right stick touch.

Passing is pretty intuitive. You just point the left stick in the direction of the teammate you want to pass to and hit A. And then of course you can do lobs and all that shit. I've only played a few times so I don't know just how deep the game is. But I'm definitely considering picking it up.
 
Innovation is the only way that Halo can regain its popularity. Spartan Ops was a failure but at least it was trying something new which can't be said about the multiplayer.

FIFA 12 was the first one I ever played and I spent an entire year playing only seasons mode because of how addicting the ranking system is

When I got FIFA 13 I tried Ultimate Team for the first time and the only reason i've stopped playing it is because my 360 can't read discs any more.

I think that's why they announced the estimated dates and names map packs so early on, so that people understand this is all you'll get in terms of dlc. I wonder how they'll make H5 to be honest. They can't really cut out load outs, perks, personal ordnance now that they've been introduced and sites like IGN give them such high scores for out-bungie-ing bungie and adding to the sandbox.

I also don't understand global ordnance whatsoever. You can even call me a BK and ill admit it, but usually by the end of launch day, I've pretty much memorized weapon spawn locations. And the great thing about ranked play meant even if I wanted my hand at sniper, I could get it and my teammate wouldn't necessarily betray me for it because he knew he'd need me more than the few kills he'd get if he had sniper.

Since this is the infinity and war games. Why couldn't 343 have added a little tutorial page where you have Palmer show you an overhead view of the maps and have the weapon spawns on them much like gears showed? That way even the worst people at the game could theoretically learn the locations before even playing a match. Oh ok, there's a spartan laser at the the top of the middle hill in the Valhalla etc.

The game sold millions.

How are people not "into" Halo like they were in the Halo 2/3 days? Halo shares the market with bigger games now, but Halo 4 sales are very comparable to 3 and Reach in their launch windows.

The basics is, there's a button for shoot, regular pass, leading pass, and lob pass. How much you hold each button down determines the power.

For passing, you just point the stick in the general direction and it will pick a person to pass to depending on your power and where they are. I think you can turn off pass assist but that's just crazy, at least for me,

Shooting you aim it and gauge its power.

But then there's buttons you can combine with all these actions to have them have different effects and properties such as a chip shot, finesse shot, give and go and more. Game is super deep.

FIFA is amazing. Best playing with a bunch of friends so you can shit talk and emulate the announcers. The MM is fun as hell, just make sure your mute button is handy.

The Palmer briefing going into War Games woulda been a neat idea actually, irrespective of new or old gameplay mechanics. Just a two minute walk through of a match, and then game mode-specific ones every time you entered a hopper you'd never tried.

Not sure if the people who need that knowledge wouldn't just skip past it though.

Everyone I know in real life that has an Xbox owned Halo 3.
Approximately 1/4 of those people bought Reach.
Zero of those people bought Halo 4. Yes, zero.

Gaming habits changed, people grew up, moved on, whatever. Also Halo changed and became not Halo. If 3 to Reach to 4 was the same incremental change as 2 to 3 the gaming landscape would be much different.
