Sounds practical and cool. But "why not use a button for that" is going to be the counter, and has been for a good while now, heh.

I hoped they wouldn't add a gimmick in the controller, oh well, hopefully you can just use the PS3 controller.
I said it was a compromise controller. They could make it work better for those things, but then it would no longer be a compromise controller.
Also, the premise that Sony is losing revenue on a measurable scale because Americans aren't buying their console because of a perceived controller issue with certain types of games is somewhat preposterous.

Sony creating a Wii U GamePad of their own would be pretty awesome. The usefulness an additional screen is pretty obvious and the way the Wii U GamePad does it is effective.
I can understand the appeal to the American market comment. More specifically, probably meant appeal to the Xbox market. Which is biggest in the USA.

For some reason I doubt they tested a wiiU like pad, by that I mean not as big as that. I don't think Sony is looking at an LCD controller being a key functionality of the PS4 like it is for the WiiU, so the screen wouldn't need to be as big.
Who knows though. Who knows if it's even there any more. I'm cautious but hey if they put as much thought into it as claimed, I'm interested to see whatever it is.

You think Touch & Motion Controls are gimmicks but they are more natural then pressing a button that do preset inputs.

Agreed. I love the additional screen on the Wii U controller, I mean in general the controller is pretty comfortable too, I never had any fatigue throughout my ZombiU playthrough.

I hate the stupid design legacy and untouchable icon crap. Throw it away and start over with an emphasis on ergonomics. Follow the example of gaming mice. Create an ergonomic shape with the hand in a rest position then put the buttons there. Genius!
I'm going to be very disappointed when this controller just ends up looking like a bigger Dual Shock -_-
I'll be loud in the other direction. Both controllers suck and have only stayed around because 'core gamers' are set in their ways in the same way 'casuals' are in theirs.

absolutely not. Cellphone esque touchscreens lack both tactile feedback and precision compared to traditional button controls. this isn't as much of an issue if you're playing directly on a tablet and state at the controls and screen at the same time, but it's a dealbreaker for consoles

I think Gabe Newell's comments are relevant here: They're neither pointless gimmicks nor an indisputable step forward, just a step to the side. Touch and motion can be a lot more intuitive for someone who isn't accustomed to "traditional" input methods, and they can have distinct advantage like moving a cursor with an IR pointer or manipulating an object in 2D with multitouch. They also have different limitations, such as limited precision and latency for motion controls, and a lack of feedback from a touch screen. How well they work depends too heavily on the game and the implementation for sweeping statements about either being good or bad to have much meaning.

That asumes that people forwent the PS3 in favor of a 360 because of the controller. First out the gate, initial price, patriotism, friends' preference, developer support all make sense. Have you ever met anyone who bought a 360 over a PS3 for the sole reason (or even real factor) of the controller design? I certainly haven't.

I really want to see the back side of it, but I agree completely. The ergonomics are a little unconventional, but it accommodates hands of all sizes. They could probably shorten the handles a little bit and still have it be plenty roomy.
Thinking about where the bottom of my palm would be makes me confident it would be uncomfortable.

I love the dual shock 3. I would only change the R2-L2 triggers. Otherwise, it's a great controller.
But i wish the next Playstation has a gamepad like the Wii U. That touch screen is just perfect.

I dominate with the 360 controller and I dominate with the PS3 controller. It literally makes no difference to me. The placements aren't....anything. They're just there. They're fine. There's tons of gamepads that have symmetrical analogs. I'm blown away by people who think it's a problem. Even numerous PC gamepads utilize the same design. The only thing about the DS3 I dislike analog wise is that it could definitely be grippier. The material or the shape or whatever.
