Not running a news story until you vet your sources before running a news story is a different thing. ESPN with all their power and resources got outscooped by a blog site. That in itself is embarrassing, but nothing new. Look how often Jay Glazer clowns ESPN's "insiders". But it means they've gotten lazy, not that they are actively trying to cover this story up.
ESPN is more than happy to start reporting on stories once they've been broken; they're not stupid and know how to chase after money and ratings.
They just don't want to be known as the place that's breaking these stories. As the nation's biggest sports broadcaster, the last thing ESPN wants is to get a reputation among the major sports leagues as a hard-hitting, muckraking news outlet. ESPN has no reason to try to outscoop Yahoo Sports and Deadspin.
They have their hands in far too many cookie jars to be considered impartial.
